Hey Bay of Dreamers!

It’s amazing to think we are already half way through our year and so much has been happening! Some great clubbies have put in a huge amount of work to get us to this point: Grace, Jono and the Lifeguarding committee ensuring the 9 weeks of completed patrols have been adequately resourced and executed professionally. Additionally, Brady has been running IRB courses that have seen a large number of much needed crew and drivers qualified; Tony and the Junior Surf Committee ensuring our 600+ nippers are learning the right skills and having fun; Danny and the other coaches DG, Rod, Wheels & Simone for getting our senior athletes firing; Ruth and Richard for the endless registration processing; Louise for getting the accounts in order for auditing; and Leigh for supporting and completing a range of important tasks!

Unfortunately my Christmas message has a negative. Over the past couple of months there have been a couple of occasions involving theft in the clubhouse and there are more and more instances of non-club members accessing the facilities. Can I please ask that all access tag holders follow the rules of holding a tag, which includes ensuring the club is left secure.

Additionally it is advised that members do not bring items of value to the club. If anyone sees any suspicious behaviour please contact someone on the committee.

With the summer holidays on us, it only gets busier! Our satellite patrols commence at Long Bay and Takapuna this weekend and our dedicated lifeguards will ensure that the North Shore is safe for the beach-going public. If the weather stays as hot as it has been we will certainly see some packed beaches!

On behalf of the MBSLSC Committee I’d like to wish all members and supporters a very Merry

Christmas and successful New Year.

Have a great break and be safe.

Black Fins and Junior Black Fins take on the world.

Some of the best athletes of the surf lifesaving world headed to our shores (Mount Maunganui) at the end of November to compete for the International Surf Rescue Challenge – a competition held every other year outside of Worlds.Countries competing alongside the New Zealand Black Fins included Australia, Japan, South Africa, Great Britain, USA and Canada. As 3-times reigning World Lifesaving Champions, the New Zealand Black Fins headed into competition with targets on their back and a developing legacy to uphold.

In what was some beautiful, but challenging surf conditions the New Zealand Black Fins finished 2nd behind the old foe Australia in each of the 3 tests to finish the competition second overall – a result which perhaps doesn’t quite illustrate the fight and determination our team put out each time they hit the start line. Ultimately the Fins were beaten by a better team on the day, but the experiences gained from the competition will provide valuable insight into what is required to stay on top at Worlds in Adelaide in 2018.

Our Mairangi Bay family is extensively represented throughout our National team with 6 of the 9-strong management team hailing from the Bay of Dreams. And who can forget most importantly, two of our super athletes, Danielle McKenzie and Nick Malcolm who both competed strongly in some hot competition throughout the 3 days and represented their country, their club and themselves with great distinction.

The New Zealand Youth team, more commonly known as the Junior Black Fins enjoyed a significant competition of their own challenging the countries of Australia, Great Britain, South Africa and USA.

With management represented here too and 2 Dreamers on the rise in the New Zealand surf scene, Samalulu Clifton and BaydenBotha absolutely smashing out some amazing racing it is no surprise that this team for the first time in history took a test win from the Australians. This is a remarkable result for this group for which Sama and Bayden played such an instrumental role and bodes well for the future in this event.

So where to from here for Mairangi Bays representation on the National Surf Lifesaving scene.Club head coach Danny will be taking a New Zealand Development team back to Japan in the middle of the year and the Black Fins with all our Dreamer involvement heading to Adelaide in November for a tilt at a 4th World Championship crown. 2018 will be a busy one for all involved.

If you see some of your athlete heroes hanging around the club do not hesitate to head up and say Hi – they will not bite, and you should be proud of what they are doing on the world stage.

Hi team

A great season so far! Well done to all of you for committing to the training sessions and taking part in various competitions too. January sees us straight back into racing with ERC’s!! ERC's entry form must be completed by Friday Jan 5th at 10pm.

https://eventdesq.sportstg.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=main&EventDesqID=26907&OrgID=20490

Double Ski, Beach Sprints, and Beach Relay starts at 4:30pm on Friday 26th. Please make sure your travel arrangements are sorted to be ready at the tent by 3pm on Friday. We have had our booking at Atrium cancelled due to a Ownership Change and have missed out on re-booking. Fio is working super hard to secure some accommodation at the moment and we hope to have something finalised before Christmas. In the mean time, feel free to go and secure your own accommodation for ERC's as there is no guarantee that the club can cater for your needs.

We still intend to have a team dinner and meeting at the RSA on Saturday night (not Friday night) and also Pizza night on Sunday evening.

The club unfortunately will no longer stock/supply Senior

togs/jammers. Senior club members are encouraged to buy their own

togs/jammers. The only stipulation being that they are plain NAVY blue.

Swimshop.co.nz has a good selection

With the sea being so warm its been great to see so many kids and parents enjoying the ocean – we have also had a decent amount of waves in the past weeks and have seen huge improvements in confidence with body surfing, and boarding. With 626 junior members registered the coaches and managers have done a fantastic job making sure the club days run safely & smoothly. Thank you also to parent help in the water and at the BBQ – we look forward to your continued support in 2018.

Waipu & RuakakaThanks to all those who registered for the training camp at Waipuon 10,11,12th Jan and the Junior Carnival at Ruakaka on Sat 13th

Jan. Like Orewa, it is a participation/ fun carnival but you do need your club beanie and pink safety vest to take part both at the carnival and for training. More information will be issued closer to the event.

After hours use of club gearA reminder that the use of club boards is for members only, under the supervision of a parent/caregiver. Members must be wearing club gear (and have 200m badge to take out a foamie.) Due to the cost of fibre glass boards ($1800+ each) and lengthy repair time, we ask that you please rather use the foamies and boogie boards only.If we can all please remember to rinse gear off and return them neatly back into the gear shed, thanks.

With our Junior Sundays Sessions having loads of keen Nippers & being so well attended we could really do with extra assistance from Senior clubbies to please help assist in the training. So if you’re free we’d really appreciate your help. Thanks team!

First club day in 2018 is Sunday 21st January

If you are looking to upskill, whether it be first aid or other development opportunities, please let me know so we can keep an eye out for appropriate courses.

There’ll be another Surf Lifeguard Course starting beginning of February 2018. Any members looking to qualify as a lifeguard please look on the Lifeguarding page on our website in the new year for details to register 😉

Patrols at Takapuna and Long Bay start this weekend. This is an important part of our lifeguarding agreement with SLSNR and we need to ensure we deliver on our commitment.

There are always situations where you cannot attend a rostered patrol. To make it easier to sort swaps/replacement we have set up the “Mairangi Bay Patrol Swaps” Facebook page.

Have a great holiday and stay safe
