Record-Breaking Donn Win for Lea (cont. from p1) Lea had made seven of his previous 11 starts on theturf, where he won the 2012 GIII Commonwealth TurfH. and was second behind Horse of the Year Wise Dan(Wiseman=s Ferry) in last year=s GII Firecracker H. Butwhen the 5-year-old drew a disadvantageous post inthe El Prado S., connections decided to try the dirt andLea rewarded the decision with a 3 1/4-length victory inthe Jan. 11 GIII Hal=s Hope S. AIt=s always a different challenge when you move tothe dirt,@ said Bill Mott, who took over training Lea fromAl Stall last November. AI felt he was capable, but thecompetition was stiff and we were in against achampion. We were good enough to beat him today.@ Mott continued, AI saw when [Will Take Charge]broke free and I knew he=d be running at us. We weregood enough to scoot away from him.@ As for what isnext for the new Grade I winner, Mott added, AIt=s along year and the big races are at the end of the yearand there's a lot of good racing in between. Right nowI=d love to point him for the [GI] Whitney at Saratoga.@ Winning rider Joel Rosario was never worried. AIknew turning for home the kind of horse he is,@ Rosariosaid. AHe just never quit running, so I was very happyturning for home. I never worried about Will TakeCharge coming from behind. It was all the horse. He didit so easy. The fact that he broke the track recorddoesn=t surprise me.@

Will Take Charge lost little in defeat while making hisfirst start since the Nov. 29 GI Clark H. AWe gotblocked for a bit and couldn=t get out, so we couldn=tmove as quickly as we wanted to,@ commented trainerD. Wayne Lukas. AThat=s just horse racing. They had toset a new track record to beat us, so that=s all you needto know. Kudos to the winner.@ WinStar Farm=s second-choice Revolutionary (WarPass), well back early, failed to mount a bid andfinished seventh. AThe horse just never really fired,"trainer Todd Pletcher said. AIt=s such a speed-favoringsurface right now and he=s a horse that=s deep closer,so it was probably the wrong setup, wrong surface.@ Lea, a son of Claiborne stallion First Samurai, is thefirst foal out of another Claiborne/Dilschneiderhomebred in multiple stakes placed Greenery (Galileo{Ire}). STRONG START AT FTKFEB AS ‘INTENT’ TOPSby Lucas Marquardt The first session of the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky WinterMixed Sale got off to a strong start yesterday inLexington with a dozen six-figure horses and livelyactivity at all levels of the market. In total, 122 horsessold for $4,475,100, an averageof $36,681 and a median of$16,000. The RNA rate, from 31horses not sold, was a solid20.3%. Last year=s sale featured areduction from Eugene Melnyk=ssuccessful racing and breedingoperation, so year-over-yearcomparisons don=t reveal much(last year=s average was$56,252), though the fact themedian was up at all (6.7%,from $15,000) suggests a strongmarket. Giving further credenceto that notion is that theopening-session average was atleast twice the averages realized by the >12, >11 and >10renewals ($17,044, $15,418 and $15,899,respectively). Cont. p7

Topping the opener was the 5-year-old broodmareprospect Devious Intent (Dixie Union), who hadchampion Groupie Doll (Bowman=s Band) back in third inlast summer=s GIII Gardenia S. Representatives ofBarbara Banke=s Stonestreet Stable, on the phone withFasig executives, landed the sleek bay for $350,000.Grovendale=s James Keogh sold Devious Intent onbehalf of TK Stables LLC as hip 138. Devious Intent was produced by the Machiavellianmare Hafifah and is a 3/4-sibling to SP Virgil Caine(Dixieland Band). Keoghsaw a lot of those relationsin the mare=s physicalmake-up. AShe profiled a lot likeDixie Union and DixielandBand, and I could seecertain characteristics ofMachiavellian in her,@ saidKeogh. AShe=s a lovelytype, and she=ll fit a lot ofstallions. She=s not anoverly big mare, but she=snot small, so you couldbreed her to a big or smallstallion.@ Keogh said the mare=sprice tag as Aright on@ with his expectations. Yesterday, hips 1-176 went through the ring. Today,a much bigger session--hips 177-588--will be on offer. For catalog, results and outs, or to watch the sale live, visit www.fasigtipton.com. For TK Stable, All Intents and Purposes... Last summer, TK Stable LLC=s Kevin Hulse got a hugethrill when Devious Intent (Dixie Union--Hafifah, byMachiavellian) handed dual champion Groupie Doll arare defeat in the GIII Gardenia S. at Ellis Park. It wasthe first graded win for Hulse=s relatively upstartoperation, and the first for Devious Intent, who Hulsepurchased as a stakes-winning racing prospectfor $75,000 at the2012 KeenelandNovember Sale. The win, naturally, greatly increasedDevious Intent=s cache, and when she returnedto the ring yesterday atFasig-Tipton, her stockwas valued byStonestreetThoroughbred Holdingsat $350,000. AIt=s kind of bittersweet,@ Hulse said after watchingDevious Intent sell. AWe could have put her in foal and

sold her next November, or kepther and sold foals out of her, butshe=s such a nice filly that I trulywanted a nice farm to get herthat has availability to the kindof stallions she should be bredto.@ When Hulse learned the marewas purchased by Stonestreet,he laughed, AOh, perfect--I thinkshe=ll be just fine.@ Hulse and his wife Tammiehave been involved in racing andbreeding for five years. Back in2010, they made some noise atKeeneland November when, intheir second year in the

business, they purchased the stakes-winning colt Glint(Sharp Humor) for $340,000 as a racing prospect. Cont. p8

All Intents and Purposes for TK (cont. from p7) Glint didn=t pan out the way Hulse hoped, but he hadmuch better luck a year later at the sale with thepurchase of Travel Advisory (Stormy Atlantic), a$90,000 pick-up who ran second in the 2012 renewalsof the GIII Transylvania S. and GII American Turf. AWe were beaten by Silver Max both times,@ saidHulse. The Hulses were back at November in 2012, and, with the help of bloodstock agent Jared Hughes, selected Devious Intent. AJared also bought a Scat Daddy 2-year-old filly forme named Allanah who won [last year=s] Cincinnati S.at Turfway, so we=ve had a lot of success together,@ hesaid. Allanah was a $185,000 KEEAPR purchase. For her new connections, Devious Intent put togethera record of 8-2-2-1 and earned over $140,000. AKellyn Gorder trained her, and he did an exceptionaljob,@ Hulse said. AShe had been trained by Bret Calhoun, and it=s pretty hard to improve a mare off Bret Calhoun. The key is that we just took our time with her.@ He admitted that Gorder was, understandably, a littlereluctant to take on Groupie Doll in the Gardenia, however. AKellyn=s pretty conservative, and he said, >Geez,Groupie Doll?=@ said Hulse. AI said that I liked the fillyand to not worry about it. If she lost, it wasn=t going tobe a reflection on him. She=s a champion--we shouldlose. But she was feeling good, and we said, >Let=s doit.= She ran an exceptional race.@ In total, Devious Intent was first or second in 9 of 17starts and earned $279,041. TK Stable has a small farm on Paris Pike in Lexingtonnear Millennium Farm. AWe currently have sevenbroodmares, and of the seven, four are stakes winners,@said Hulse. AAnd the other three throw really goodphysicals. I=ve got a Harlan=s Holiday mare that=s biggerthan Zenyatta, and her foals are just outstanding.@ Hulse said TK breeds both to sell and race. ALike withDevious Intent tonight, we had a pretty high reserve onher, and it wouldn=t have bothered me to take herhome,@ he said. AYou have to support your horses. Butit would have been two or three years before we sawany return on investment in her, and our motto is that,if we have a mare worth $200,000 or more, we=regoing to sell.@ Hulse owned a Nebraska-based powerlineconstruction company called MidPlains Power, but soldthe operation and resigned as CEO to focus on thehorse business. ‘Country’ Home of the Stars... As expected, the undefeated Grade II winner Clusterof Stars (Greeley=s Galaxy--Babyurthegreatest, byHonour and Glory) was one of the bright lights ofyesterday=s opener, bringing a bid of $300,000 fromTown and Country Farm. That was the second-highestprice on the session. Taylor Made Sales=Shannon Potter, whoadvises Town andCountry principalsLouise Courtelis anddaughter Kiki Courtelis, was on the phoneupstairs when hesecured the well-made5-year-old broodmareprospect, who soldfrom Taylor Made=sdraft as hip 99. AShe=ll join the goodcollection of mares we=ve been building up,@ said Potter, who added the mare would most likely visit Grade Iwinner Graydar (Unbridled=s Song) in his first year atTaylor Made Stallions. AShe was probably the prettiestmare on the grounds, and what she did on the trackspeaks for itself. What she did was unreal.@ Cluster of Stars, bred in New York by MichaelMcPoland and Sean Finn, was campaigned by ownerTurtle Bird Stable and trainer Steve Asmussen. Sheopened her account with a daylight win at Aqueduct inFebruary of 2012, but went missing for a year beforedoubling up in a restricted allowance last January.During an impressive 2013 campaign, she added winsin the GII Distaff H. and GII Gallant Bloom H.--the latterover the Grade I winners Dance to Bristol(Speightstown) and Dance Card (Tapit). Cluster of Stars was retired with seven wins fromseven starts and earnings of $549,600. Potter said the price was right around what heexpected. AWe had seen the mare earlier, right aroundthe November sales, and she=d been priced to us rightaround there,@ he explained. ASo we had a pretty goodclue that=s what it was going to take.@ Cluster of Stars is the lone stakes winner under herfirst two dams. AShe doesn't have the best pedigree,@admitted Potter, Aso we were definitely buying basedon looks and race record. And she's pretty darn goodlooking. She's correct, she's got a greatshoulder, has a lot ofbone, has a prettyhead--she's what youwant physically for abroodmare.@ Town and Country hasmade its impact felt atthe bloodstock sales inthe last few months. AtKeeneland November, itpurchased seven maresfor $4.375 million, including the $1.75-million Upperline (Maria=sMon), who sold in foal toWar Front. Across townat Fasig-Tipton November, meanwhile, Town andCountry purchased three more mares for $1.7 million, including another star Empire-bred, the GSW AgaveKiss (Lion Heart), who sold for $1.5 million in foal toTapit. Potter said Town and Country has culled probably ahalf dozen mares from its band to make room for thenew purchases. "And we'll continue to cull, as themares we bought recently are really top end, so thereare some mares going down the totem pole,@ he said. Potter gave all credit to the Courtelises for their driveand direction. AThose ladies are great,@ he said. Wounded Warrior Nabs Bernardini Filly... Up-and-coming owner Chip McEwen has an excitingKentucky Derby prospect on his hands in the form ofthe New York-bred Uncle Sigh (Indian Charlie), butyesterday, his business partner Danzel Brendemuehlwas busy adding prospects to his juvenile-pinhookingoperation. Brendemuehl, on behalf of McEwen=sWounded Warrior Stable, paid $200,000 for a HiddenBrook-consigned Bernardini filly, the top-priced shortyearling to sell Sunday. The Feb. 7-foaled bay is adaughter of GSW Bohemian Lady (Carson City), a half-sister to Grade I winner Any Given Saturday (DistortedHumor). She was bred by the Sanan family=s PaduaStable. Padua initially sent the filly through the ring twomonths ago at Keeneland November, but bought herback for $190,000. Cont. p10

AWe were a little surprised we didn=t get her sold atNovember because there was a lot of activity, but Ithink she fell through the cracks in terms of book andplacement,@ said Sasha Sanan. ABut she=s a nice fillyand developed well, and since we=re getting out ofbreeding and just racing a few horses, it made sense tobring her here.@ Brendemuehl has been partnering with McEwen forseveral years now. The Florida-based horsewoman buysboth pinhooking and racing prospects for McEwen, andsaid the Bernardini will be earmarked toward theformer. AWe think maybe we=ll keep her for a 2-year-old-in-training sale and have a little fun with her,@ saidBrendemuehl. AWe=ve done that for a few years now[bought horses as weanlings and pinhooked them asjuveniles], and we=ve done pretty well.@ McEwen=s also done well with his racing stable, which is named after the successfull charity thatprovides financial assistance to servicemen and womeninjured in battle. Among others, Wounded WarriorStable can boast of Uncle Sigh, who broke his maidenby 14 1/2 lengths facing New York-breds in lateDecember in his second career start, then ran Samraat(Noble Causeway) to a length in the GIII Withers S. atAqueduct Feb. 1. AHe ran a terrific race and it=s great for Chip,@ saidBrendemuehl. AHe=s put so much into this, and he=sbeen so supportive of various projects that support ourtroops when they come home. He gives 10% of all hisproceeds from both races and sales to projects thatbenefit wounded veterans. He=s just a real good guy.@ Among the charities McEwen supports are RetrievingFreedom, which provides service dogs to vets; andTask Force Dagger Foundation, which helps familieswho=ve lost a member at war. The South Carolina-based McEwen owns a pharmaceutical company. Brendemuehl laughed that McEwen is a ASouthernboy@ who is sometimes underestimated because of hisdrawl. RIA ANTONIA TUNES UP GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Ria Antonia(Rockport Harbor) continued preparations for hersophomore debut in the Feb. 22 GIII Rachel AlexandraS. with a five-furlong work at Fair Grounds Sunday in1:01.80. AShe couldn=t have done it much easier thanthat,@ said principal owner Ron Paolucci. A[Exercise riderElizabeth Dobles] had a good hold on her and I reallyliked the way she galloped out.@ Ria Antonia had originally been expected to reappearagainst the boys in the GII Risen Star S., but planschanged after a cold snap in New Orleans caused thefilly to miss several days of training. AIt looks like the Risen Star is going to come up witha big field,@ Paolucci explained. ASince this will be herfirst start back, I thought the smaller field [in the RachelAlexandra] might be a little easier on her.@ Trainer Jeremiah Englehart thinks the Fair Groundstrack will suit his filly. AI remember realizing how long the stretch run waswhen I came here before,@ said Englehart. AWith thelong stride this filly has, I thought this would be theperfect place to bring her to get her started on her3-year-old campaign. Of course, our real goal thisseason is three or four races down the road, so thisrace coming up will give us a chance to see exactlywhere we are with that plan.@

READY'S IMAGEAmong Bi l l Oppenheim’s21 APEX SIRES: THE PRICE IS RIGHT“More Than Ready was the best horse sired by the legendary Argentine sire Southern Halo

during his North American stint, and what was distinctive about More Than Ready was that he

ran Beyer numbers of 105 twice as a 2-year-old in 1999, in the 5 ½ furlong GIII Tremont S. and

the six-furlong GIII Sanford S. at Saratoga; that is a stratospheric number for a 2-year-old at that

time of year. Ready’s Image duplicated More Than Ready’s Beyer 105 in the Sanford, by then a

Grade II, in 2007. He had only 35 foals in his first crop, but they include the good 2012 Canadian

BTW 2-year-old Leinan, and last year’s GIII Pucker Up S. winner I’m Already Sexy. He’s standing for just $5,000 this year, and it’s a sire line well proven for speed and precocity.”

Come see him at Walmac, or call today for assistance Nicking your mare.
