PRESIDENT’S REPORT

The AGM was run last month and we had some of our committee stepping down. Unfortunately, we had

no nominations for any of these positions. The position of secretary is the most important position we

need to fill. We need a secretary for the smooth running of the club and under our constitution we have to

have a secretary to keep our incorporated status. Please talk to me or one of the committee if you are able

to help us. The meeting ended with pizza and a good chat. Thanks to Bernie Mc Keegan for chairing the

AGM.

The Annual lunch at the Box Hill RSL was well attended and I certainly had a good time. It is a great

venue. Thanks to all the members who brought their cars along for the display in the car park and to those

who dressed up. Thanks to our Guest Speaker Kevin Churchill who gave a great talk about Henry Ford’s

assistants. Unfortunately, he could only talk about a few due to time constraints. We will however have

him to our general meeting to finish the talk or present the whole talk again.

Several appreciation awards were given out to committee members stepping down and our important

award of the year “Club Person of the Year” was awarded jointly to Warwick Landy and Paul Daley for

outstanding service to the club.

We were to have the president’s Icicle rally this month but as the president will be away in South

Australia this has been postponed. Bruce Csorba will be giving a talk on Ford accessories at the general

meeting which should be interesting.

At our next meeting in September we will be having our Annual Auction Night. Please start looking out

all those bits you wish to sell and save up some money as well.

I have been speaking with Don McPherson one of the Cup weekend rally directors and it sounds really

interesting with some different things happening so please book your accommodation. The entry form

will be in the magazine. Please send this back as soon as possible so they have some idea of numbers.

See you all in September.

CHRISTMAS IN JULY WRAP

Presentation luncheon, A.K.A. Christmas in July.

This year the club luncheon was at a new venue, the Box Hill R.S.L. We had ample parking in a

designated car park for all of the “polished” Model T`s.

The venue was suited to our needs in that we had the use of a function room, our appetites satisfied

with traditional Christmas fare, right down to an ample serve of Christmas pudding.

We were all welcomed to the dinner by our President Fiona Dillon. A large screen was at the front

of the room running the clubs DVD of the 2016 hub rally in Warrigal and surrounds.

After the main course, Brian Churchill gave us a knowledgeable insight to some of the interesting

backroom people that Henry Ford surrounded himself with, there was much to learn, however time

restraints gave us an overview.

We then had the presentation awards, followed by an informal chat among all and sundry.

Like all days you enjoy, time flies and it was time to go.

Brian Smith

Ford marks a century of building trucks!

Announced on January 11, 1917, and introduced to the public six months later, Ford’s one-ton truck

chassis — later identified as the Model TT — was intended to fill a niche previously occupied by

aftermarket suppliers. Originally available only as a rolling chassis, the Ford TT, which marked its

100th birthday on July 27, laid the groundwork for every Ford truck that would follow, including

the perennially best-selling Ford F-150 pickup.

As soon as Henry Ford’s Model T was launched in 1909, aftermarket suppliers began to adapt it for

commercial purposes, adding stake beds and van backs to carry cargo. Sensing the opportunity,

Ford supplied its customers and dealers Model Ts in rolling chassis form for conversions, some of

which included strengthened frames and wheelbases longer than the T’s 100 inches. For those

seeking utility with less carrying capacity, Ford’s Commercial Roadster, introduced in 1910,

offered a small pickup bed (which could be adapted for use as a flatbed) and a removable third seat.

By 1914, third-party suppliers were building heavily modified versions of the Model T chassis

capable of hauling up to three tons of cargo. The company began to receive more requests to build a

heavy-duty platform of its own, but Henry Ford found himself distracted by several projects,

including the development of Fordson tractors and a December 1915 trip to Europe to negotiate an

end to the first World War. His efforts in regards to the latter proved unsuccessful.

As Pat Foster writes in Ford Tough — 100 Years of Ford Trucks, Ford sent a letter to its dealer

network in 1916, advising them that conversion of Model T chassis for heavy-duty purposes was

henceforth prohibited, citing safety reasons. While this may have been a valid excuse, Ford itself

was in the process of developing a one-ton truck chassis, and hoped to eliminate the competition

prior to its launch.

Ford marks a century of building trucks cont...

In January 1917, the United States’ entry into the war still seemed uncertain. With an eye towards

business, Ford formally announced its one-ton truck chassis on January 11, proclaiming a base price of

$500. A production schedule wasn’t announced, which proved to be a good thing: On April 6, 1917, the

U.S. formally declared war on Germany. The conflict which Henry Ford feared had come home, and the

automaker turned its attention to increasing production for the war effort. By the end of May, Ford had

been given an order for 2,000 Model T chassis to be converted for use as ambulances, and ultimately, the

conflict served as a proving ground for both the Model T and the Model TT.

Though the war delayed the introduction of the Model TT, it didn’t prevent it, and the chassis reached

the market in July 1917. Its price had risen for the estimated $500 to $600, but for their money buyers

received a reinforced frame stretched to a 124-inch wheelbase, a heavy-duty suspension, and a worm

drive axle that could be ordered with either standard final gearing (delivering a top speed of 15 mph) or

optional gearing that allowed the TT to achieve the breakneck pace of 22 mph. A higher-output engine

wasn’t available, meaning the TT got by with the same 20-horsepower, 177-cu.in. inline four-cylinder

engine found in the Model T.

Buyers were also on their own, at least initially, for cabs and bodies. In 1924, Ford debuted the C-cab,

named for the shape of its rear pillar, along with a selection of commercial bodies. A fully enclosed cab

was added to the mix in 1925, and the number of body offerings from Ford was increased. By the time

that Ford’s 1.5-ton Model AA replaced the TT in 1927, prices for the latter had fallen to $325, and total

production had reached 1.3-million units.

Ford continued to advance its truck product line over the years, adding features and capabilities

demanded by commercial customers. The postwar years saw a shift in the market, and with many

returning veterans moving from rural to urban areas, pickup trucks went with them. The F-Series

debuted in 1948, with the number (F-1 through F-7) initially denoting its class and payload. In 1953, the

F-100 replaced the F-1, initiating a naming convention that remains in use today.

The sixth-generation F-Series arrived in 1975, bringing with it the F-150 moniker. Consumers approved,

and in 1977 Ford took the sales crown from General Motors, an honor its maintained for the past four

decades. Happy birthday, Ford trucks, and here’s to the next 100 years.

Reports: Bernie asked Fiona Dillion the president of the club to provide her annual report. President's MTFCV Club Year Report for 2016/17 – Fiona Dillon My first year as president has been a busy one. Our executive committee was also new and we have been grateful for all the help from the outgoing committee. Our biggest challenge for the year has been getting rallies together for the main long weekends and we have been successful in getting these organised until 2019. Thanks to Paul D and Chris D for all their hard work. This is a challenge especially when booking accommodation as large sporting events are being held in country Victoria on these weekends. We are fortunate that our members have stepped up to organise these events and I am looking forward to attending. Our first big rally was the National Rally held at Warragul. What a fantastic week of driving and events around East Gippsland. Thank you to the rally committee for putting on a first-class event. Our inaugural rally for the Queen’s Birthday weekend was the Mildura 500 which was a really excellent run to Mildura through country Victoria. It was a great rally and we look forward to adding on to this run and making it even more fun next year. A big thanks to all the other members of the club who have organised runs for weekends and Sundays. It is much appreciated. We have also started to have runs with other clubs like the A Model and Ford Owners, Restorers and Drivers Clubs which have been good. All these runs are a great way to showcase our cars and encourage new and younger members. By attending these events club members show that we are committed to furthering our love of cars especially Model T Fords. We welcomed our new magazine editor Chris Smith, who took over from Jo Baulch. Jo took on the job as a temporary position and ended up being there for years!! Thanks Jo for all the hard work. We have continued to put out an excellent magazine for our members. We have a lot of members who are unable to attend meetings and events due to location around our great state. The magazine is a way of keeping up with what is going on. We look forward to seeing more contributions from members. It could be a biography of a member or a particular car. We would love to hear about member’s cars and the process of restoration or a family connection, and articles and photos about rallies attended. As part of our commitment to the history of the club, we have been encouraging people to help us archive photos, videos and memorabilia. In 2020 the club will be forty years old. It is imperative that we gather this information about the early years of the club, the changing membership, the rallies and the technical knowledge about our cars. As our membership is aging it is important that we encourage younger people to buy or have access to a car and to join the club. This is a problem for a lot of car clubs and the reality is that young people see veteran and vintage cars as being inaccessible. We are working towards changing that view and will keep the membership updated as we go. Thank you very much to the committee for all their hard work over the last year. Their commitment to the club is appreciated. I look forward to another great year of meetings, rallies and events. Look forward to seeing you all. Bernie thanked Fiona for her report and asked Rhonda Huitt to provide the annual Treasurer’s report. Rhonda Huitt provide the annual financial report for 2016-2017 and also the National Rally final accounts. The report was - Moved by: Rhonda Huitt Seconded by: Bruce Csorba

DISCUSSION RE VACANT POSITIONS: He advised that the club secretary position is still vacant and must be filled as the club is a public entity and if no nominations are received within 14 days, the committee will appoint a new secretary. He advised that he doesn’t think we need to appoint anybody for Kitchen Attendant as the position is still vacant and the members are sharing the job and doing a good job of it. He advised that Meet and Greet should be every members’ responsibility and also doesn’t require any one specific appointed to fulfil the role. He advised that the committee has to work out how they will organise the Christmas party. He advised that the new committee need to look into the succession planning for next year seriously given the population of the club is aging.
