Celebrating Women’s History Month

March & April Birthdays

Catch a Star

March is women’s history month. Throughout our history, the

important contributions of women in our nation’s defense and as

part of the Veteran population cannot be overstated. VA dedicates

Women’s History Month in March to remember the women who

served our nation throughout history.

VA is proud to salute women Veterans for their accomplishments

and contributions to the United States military and society. Women

have served courageously in America’s wars and conflicts throughout

our history. And although women were not formally under military

command until the early part of the 20th century, they have served

in various capacities, beginning with the Revolutionary War. Upcoming Events

This year we have the distinct honor to

recognize two WWII area women that

took care of our Veterans. Mrs. Lois

Bernice Cutlip was a Medic at Camp

Beale who cared for the wounded

soldiers coming back from battle

during WWII. She was also a police

officer for the cities of Modesto, CA

and Portsmith, VA along with being

one of the first female motorcycle

police officers. She was a nurse for

General Foods in Modesto, CA. After

retirement, Lois moved to Gold Beach

OR, where she was active in the community, joining the American Legion and the Veterans of

Foreign Wars Organizations. Lois was instrumental in improving the gold Beach Senior Center and

received written recognition from then Senator Bob Packwood of Oregon, and numerous accolades

from her community.

Local author of the book “Lost child of WWII”, Leonida “Nida”

Clarete-Watson told her story to the Community Living Center

visitors. She grew up in Manila during WWII, at the young age of

four she risked her life to bring aid to U.S. Military soldiers stuck

in a cave. Nida had to crawl great distances on her hands and

knees to avoid the Japanese machine guns all to deliver sweet

potatoes to the stranded solider.

From women who served as cooks, seamstresses, and launderers during the Revolutionary War to

women on the frontlines in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2008, and every woman since, have contributed

to our country’s history, a history of women showing great strength and perseverance.

Women Veterans are trailblazers, and they continue to break barriers today for the generations that

will follow. The skills and experiences women Veterans

gain from their military service lead to achievements in

their careers, contributions to their communities, and

leading roles in public service. VA is committed to

recognizing and honoring these achievements and

providing women Veterans with the benefits and

services they earned and deserve.

about her hobbies she only said, “my kids”,

what an awesome mom she must be! After a bit

more prying we find out she enjoys reading

WWII era style writing and all sorts of sports

that include basketball, football, soccer, skating

and basically all sports. Another hobby is

refinishing furniture and painting or as Selena

described “I like domesticated crafts”. When

she has the opportunity Selena really enjoys

putting together Lego kits with her kids but

most of the time it is putting them together for

the kids, I really think that she is just a kid at

heart and likes playing with Legos. Between

family life and work life I don’t know how she

finds the time for hobbies but she makes it work

and loves every minute of it.

In 2013 Selena obtained her Bachelor’s degree

in Human Resources. She enjoys her current

role a great deal and would like to eventually

expand out in the future but wants to stay in

Human Resources. A potential future interest

for Selena would be to travel to other VA

facilities doing investigations and audits.

Another interest on the horizon is Toast

Masters. For someone who does not like being

the center of attention and has a tough time

speaking in front of other I believe that she will

do well.

We now know a little about Selena Michael and

she is no longer just “that person in HR”. Who

is next for our employee spotlight? Stay tuned

in future editions of the VA Relay, you may see

your co-worker or someone you have never met

until now.

By: Shanon Goodwin

We often see

employees in the

halls, on email or

hear from them

over the telephone

but we do not know

who they really are

and what makes

them tick. Selena

Michael is who we

are going to get to know this month for our

employee spotlight. Her family is originally

from Southern California and moved here to

Douglas County when she was in the 3rd

grade. After graduating from South Umpqua

High School she was ready to start her life.

She has been here at the VA for about six years

and is currently the Supervisory Employee

Labor Relations. Selena started here as an

intermittent call center technician under the

VOC Rehab Program. He counselor suggested

a work study position at the VA, something she

had not really considered previously. Selena

enjoys her current role and it is never boring

she says, she really enjoys the reading and

research aspects of her job.

So, we all know where Selena works but we do

not know anything about her yet. She has been

married for 11 years and has three children

who are 7, 9 and 12. Outdoor activities with

her kids are among the top most things she

enjoys doing, this includes everything from

hiking, camping and swimming. When asked

Staff from the Eugene HCC said their goodbye to Dr. Murr when he returned back to Roseburg

Surgery.

Retirement of Margaret Flagor She has only been with the Roseburg VA about five years, but she has set the standard for

housekeeping. I don’t think there is a single person here that would argue against her work ethic

and dependability said Shawn Tyson. A while back, a housekeeper was telling me that a detail was

“impossible”. They said that it was too difficult to complete the whole thing. I said that Margaret

does it. They replied with, “well, of course Margaret can,

but you can’t compare me to her.”

Eugene surgical service staff thank Dr. Murr

March and April Relay ?

This issue of the Roseburg Relay covers two months, March and April. You may

be wondering why. It is because we are switching to a new software package to

create the Relay every month. We needed a little bit of extra time to create the

new templates, graphics, etc. Starting in May, we will be back on a regular

monthly schedule. Thank you for your understanding.
