Message from ACE and CIE

ACE and CIE would like to announce a new website www.usglobalcompetence.org

that features two videos and some brief interviews about the value of Title VI/Fulbright Hays in the Higher Education Act (this was originally part of NDEA). Some of you saw the first video at a program on Capitol Hill or at the JNCL-NCLIS Delegate Assembly. These are really tremendous resources.

This new website highlights the urgent need for international and foreign language education to become part of the core mission of the U.S. education system from K-12 through graduate school. It was created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of HEA-Title VI and Fulbright-Hays with the generous support of the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

Titled "Engaging the World: U.S. Global Competence for the 21st Century," the site demonstrates the importance of strengthening U.S. global competence in the 21st century. Whether it's global engagement abroad or global/cultural understanding at home, our success in this century will depend on it.

The site features two videos and 13 additional brief interviews with Title VI/Fulbright-Hays beneficiaries who are currently employing their knowledge and expertise both at home and abroad. The experts interviewed work in business, diplomacy and international peace, economic and healthcare development, education, and military security and peacekeeping. All videos are viewable online and are downloadable, and a DVD is available for purchase online at http://store.acenet.edu/showMultipleItems.aspx?category=176.

The site also includes a section on our Global Symposium –Critical Challenges in an Unpredictable World: Implications for U.S. Engagement. This event took place on Capitol Hill in March 2009, and the website features downloadable presentations as well as other documentation of the event.

Finally, you will find useful links to information on the Title VI/ Fulbright-Hays programs and related U.S. Department of Education online resources.

We hope www.usglobalcompetence.org will be useful to educators, parents and students, government policy makers, NGOs, and the U.S. business community in stimulating discussion on U.S. needs for global competence.

Sincerely,

Madeleine F. Green Vice President for International Initiatives, ACE

Miriam Kazanjian Consultant, Coalition for International Education

News from the San Antonio Chapter

AATSP Hispania Editor Janet Pérez was Honored as a permanent member of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language (ANLE) at a ceremony at the Instituto Cervantes in New York City on October 9, 2009.

Professor Pérez is a life member of AATSP, serves on the Executive Council, and has served as Editor of Hispania for the past nine years. She is the Paul Whitfield Horn Professor and Qualia Chair in Spanish in the Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures at Texas

Tech University, Lubbock, TX. She is the author of more than three hundred publications, including books, articles and monographs on the literature of Spain and Latin America.

ANLE presented her with a certificate of membership in the Academy and that of a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language in Madrid.

In its announcement of the appointment, ANLE called Professor Pérez one of the most important scholars of Hispanic letters of our times. It further cited her books and studies on Ortega y Gasset, Ana María Matute, Miguel Delibes, Gonzalo Torrente Ballester, Camilo José Cela and other writers and poets as “seminal and models in their clarity, depth and, at times, controversy.”

“Being elected a permanent member of ANLE and a corresponding member of the Royal Spanish Academy is without a doubt the honor that is most significant for me, first because it is by far the most important of my honors, and second because I was not expecting it,” Professor Pérez said as she accepted the award.

Her husband, Professor Genaro Pérez, also of Texas Tech University, as well as an AATSP member and Executive Council member, was in attendance.

AATSP 11th Biennial Northeast Regional Meeting October 9-12, 2009 at Regis and Wellesley Colleges

Approximately one hundred AATSP members attended the recent AATSP Biennial Northeast Regional meeting at both Wellesley and Regis Colleges. Highlights of the conference were the special session on Latino Writers in New England, evening film showings (in both Spanish and Portuguese), special receptions, luncheons, and a wide range of excellent presentations, ranging from Literature to Culture to Pedagogy at all levels of instruction. Presenters came from as far away as Costa Rica, Texas, Minnesota, and Florida. Many were able to stay on campus at Regis’s María Hall. It was a great way for teachers, pre-K through 16 and beyond, retired and new teachers to the profession, to meet, socialize and make connections. We are already making plans for the next Biennial!
