This kind of work requires a
special breed of people;
people who are determined.
One special dedicated
volunteer is Talin Kupelian
who manages the weekly
n e ws l e t t e r A r m e n i an
Interests. “It is a lot of work,
but I enjoy doing it,” said
Talin.
Many volunteers stood up
and took turns, addressing
the group of 23, and share
their remarks.They spoke
about how the radio brings
people together, and how the
radio feels like one big
family. “…this gift of
bringing together this
community, and everyone
here is a family. What you
have done is so invaluable to
our community”, said Taleen
Babayan.
The Armenian Radio Hour
of New Jersey had its
a n n u a l y e a r - e n d -
appreciation gathering
dinner at Kritchian’s
Restaurant in Paterson,
New Jersey on Friday,
January 3rd. The evening
was in celebration of
another year of incredible
work and dedication.
Vartan Abdo, founder and
director o f ARHNJ,
expressed his appreciation
and thanks to each
volunteer and highlighted
the contribution of each.

year-end appreciation gathering “I can only admire the
camaraderie which I witness
here under Vartan’s
leadership. It’s really
remarkable…people of every

community, from all
different backgrounds…they
all come together because of
the fun you have, this
wonderful friendship you
have, and to hear that
you’ve been around for 40

impressive.” Said Father
Simeon Odabashian, Vicar,
Diocese of the Armenian
Church.
“…to be with people who
have dedicated themselves,
it’s not easy, and we all
know it, to do this week
after week after week. To be
on time, and to pick out the
news that you feel is most
appropriate for the people to
hear. It’s not easy, it takes
hours, but it’s something I
look forward to every single
week, and I feel that
without it, I don’t feel

participation of the younger
generation in a project that we began
41 years ago. It is because we have
the cooperation of the youth that we
look at the future with great
confidence and echo very important
words. ‘Whoever captures the youth,
captures the future.’” Said Vartan
Abdo.
The video of the volunteer-
appreciation gathering was uploaded
onto YouTube and is available in this
issue of Armenian Interests.
“We should never forget the Armenian
history. Because it’s the history that
teaches us how to be right in our
future. It’s something that I see in the
young people who have joined us, and
I am hoping that we impart this
education to them, so that they would
be as strong as our leaders that never
quit.”-said Rafi Krikorian, ARHNJ
website manager
“You found a way to so seamlessly
bring [the young people] in and to tie
them in a way that was different from
the role of the Church and the role of
the cultural organization.” Said Taleen
Babayan about Vartan Abdo. “You
have this gift of bringing together this
community, and everyone here is a
family…What you have done is so
invaluable to our community.”
“…You just feel like home. And it’s
great, just kind of giving back to the
community as best we can.”- Diran

clearly demonstrates the healthy

Although the radio station was a
foreign environment, there is a lot to
learn from the location, people, as
well as the literal things going on in
the studio. Both Sandra and Arax
are involved in extracurriculars like
different clubs and sports, and
theatre. The radio exposure will add
to their list of activities.
The Benlian twins, Sandra and Arax,
visited the studios of WSOU radio
station and got a close look at the work
of the volunteers of the Armenian
Radio Hour of NJ.
“This is our first visit ever to a radio
station and it is far different from
what one imagines. While many listen
to the program, in the comforts of their
homes, on Sundays from 2:00 -4:00
p.m., being at the station gave us a
clearer look as to the amount of work
that goes into the weekly
program,” said Sandra Benlian, a
sophomore at Caldwell High School.
“We got a grand tour of the station by
the director of the ARHNJ, Vartan
Abdo. We felt at home and welcomed.
We hope to find time to join the
volunteer team and serve the
community, “ said Arax, Sandra’s twin
brother.
Sandra and Arax are both sophomores,
residing in West Caldwell. According to
her, "there aren't many Armenians in
the neighborhood, so it is always a good
experience to be a part of the culture
other than through school. Going to
church, attending camps and activities.

"I listened to lots of Armenian folk
music to learn about the country's
profound culture. The country's
people are full of passion and the
musicians are both influenced by
their own folk music tradition and
classical music," says Shen. "It is an
influential orchestra in Eastern
Europe with a distinctive style and
strong personality. I am very
honored to join the orchestra's first
China tour."
According to the Armenian
ambassador to China, Sergey
Manassarian, the China tour will
pave the way for more cultural
exchange programs between China
and Armenia in the future.
"During the five years of the Belt
and Road Initiative, the exchange
and cooperation between the two
countries not only involved
investment projects in economy and
trade, but also cooperation in energy,
security, culture and other fields,"
says the ambassador. "The Armenian
National Philharmonic Orchestra
will come back to China again and
again, expanding the geography of
tours, attracting larger audiences
and establishing stronger bonds.”
The Armenian National Philharmonic
Orchestra is making its debut tour in
China by performing 10 concerts in
nine Chinese cities, China
Daily reports.
The tour, which started with shows on
Dec 27 and 28 at Shanghai Grand
Theater will end on Jan 9 at the
National Center for the Performing
Arts in Beijing.
Under the baton of artistic director,
Eduard Topchjan, the orchestra will
play repertories that include pieces
from Russian composers, excerpts of
The Nutcracker, the classic ballet
composed by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Night
on the Bald Mountain by Modest
Petrovich Mussorgsky and excerpts of
Sergei Prokofiev's ballet work, Romeo
and Juliet, Op. 64.
The orchestra will also play Armenian
composer Aram Khachaturian's
Masquerade Suite and Spartacus ballet
suites.
"Khachaturian is considered to be one
of the leading composers in Armenia.
We included his works during the tour
of China to enable Chinese audiences
to experience the long history of
Armenia through the composer's music,
which has distinctive Armenian
cultural elements," says Arman
Padaryan, the general producer of the
Armenian National Philharmonic
Orchestra.
During the ongoing China tour, the
orchestra is cooperating with young
Chinese clarinetist, Shen Tianyi, to
play Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A
Major at the concerts being performed
