April News…….

So, if April showers bring May flowers what does April snow and cold bring?? Besides stir crazy kids and antsy gardeners??

I hope everyone had a relaxing Easter break and are ready to tackle the final stretch of this school year. Basketball season has ended and badminton is in full swing (pardon the pun!). Our gym is a busy place in the evenings as baseball teams use the facilities to get a start to their season.

Graduation plans are in the works and exams are on the horizon. Keep an eye out for the exam schedule which should be out shortly. As crazy as it sounds we are already looking at next year and exploring some new possibilities under the umbrella of high school re-design. The possibilities are endless and they are so good for kids!

Junior high and senior high report cards come out next week and parent teacher interviews follow on Wednesday evening. Kindergarten to grade three will have scheduled times. Grades 4-12 will be drop in interviews in the gym. This allows flexibility for parents whose children are taught by multiple teachers. Should this not work for your family you are encouraged to contact your teachers to make other arrangements.

If you are looking for an amazing opportunity, consider becoming a host parent to an international student. We had the pleasure of having a young lady from Germany stay with us for three months last fall. It was a fabulous experience and we have made a life-long friend in Lisa. More information can be obtained by contacting the school office or Golden Hills School Division.

Have a wonderful month!

Junior Jays Badminton

Junior Jays’ third session, badminton, has begun! The gym has been filled with grade five and six students at noon on Tuesdays; everyone seems to love badminton!

Because this will be an in-school, drop in sport, there is no need to sign up in advance. Grade five and six students are welcome to drop in any Tuesday over lunch recess.

We are getting a good start on some strong badminton careers, while getting some exercise,

and seeing lots of smiles. Go Jays!

READING... GIVE IT A SHOT!

Developing a love of reading at an

early age is one of the best invest-

ments in a student's future school

success. With that in mind the

Calgary Educational Partnership

Foundation (CEPF) developed

Reading...Give It A Shot!

Since 1995, CEPF, the Calgary Flames Hockey Club and

other corporate partners have been opening the minds of

young children to the incredible world of knowledge,

imagination and creativity through discovering the joy of

reading.

Whether its books, newspapers, magazines or content on

the internet, Reading...Give It A Shot! encourages students

in Grades 4, 5 and 6 to read. By counting minutes rather

than books, all students can participate, regardless of their

reading level.

Participating is easy! Students record their reading time on

a tracking sheet and teachers, parents, and guardians

sign-off on it. Reading...Give It A Shot! rewards students

with player bookmarks celebrating the Flames hockey

season. Students receive one bookmark for every one

hundred minutes read. The objective of the reader is to

collect the whole "team" of player bookmarks - a total of

24. Many of our learners far exceed the 2400 minutes

required and significantly improve their reading skills

during the program.

The Grade K - 6 students will be participating in the

program.

Trochu Valley Scholastic Spring Book Fair

April 11 - 18

The Scholastic Book Fair will be at our school during April 11-18. All students are welcome to come and see what this fair has to offer.

There will be brand new books and lots of fun school tools for purchase. Elementary students will be able to shop at recess and lunch time

throughout this week. And of course we will be open during parent/teacher meeting night on April 18th.

All proceeds from the book fair goes directly back into our library with the purchase of new books and resources for

our school library. Thanks for your support!

A very BIG THANKYOU to our wonderful parent council for the

donation to buy more beans to refill our library Bean Bags.

These are loved by all students from Kinder to Gr 12,

so we appreciate that these are so much more comfortable

now for us to sit and enjoy a good book in the library!!

Thanks so Much!
