Its Tiny Bug Time
Lane Property Tree Planting
In September the Chapter will be planting between 25 and 50 Cedars on the banks of the Cedar River on the Lane Preserve Work includes planting the trees and constructing wire cages to put around the seedlings to protect them from deer destruction The Chapter has been involved with Cedar tree planting on various sections of the River for many years Survival rate has been 95 when the plantings are protected The planting project is headed by John VanDalen
Dam Removal
On June 26 a contractor under the direction of Huron Pines started dam removal on the Middle Branch of the Cedar River
This was a dam that failed in 2017 after spring rains breached the dam and sent sediment downstream
A collaborative partnership between Huron Pines USFWAS WIN the landowner and our Chapter funded the project
Midland River Days - Eric Johnson
I hope everyone is having a great summer and enjoying some quality time with friends and family on the water I just wanted to remind everyone that well be teaching fly casting on Saturday August 3rd at the Midland River Days Well be set up just under the Tridge in Chippewassee Park from 9 AM until dark
The intention of our participation is to introduce our community first to the sport of fly fishing and its natural resources and secondly to the Leon P Martuch TU Ohapter
bull Im planning on being there from setup through tear down The more members we can have helping throughout the day the better Who can commit to a 2-hour time slot at some point throughout the day Please let me know ASAP so we can plan accordingly
bull What do we have in marketing materials displays posters etc that we can have at the event Obviously we want to recruit new participationmembership to the chapter and this is going to be a great opportunity for them to meet us for the first time
bull Scientific Anglers will be providing a canopy shelter along with the demo equipment If the chapter could provide a couple coolers with bottled ice water and keep it supplied throughout the day
I think that would be great to offer people Also well need some surveying stakes and caution tape to layout the casting area
If we want to continue to grow participation in our chapter (and annual banquet) we need to continue to expand our local reach Events like this are a phenomenal way to expand outside our typical demographic and get new blood in the sport and chapter Please give it some thought and let me know ASAP if and when you could help out or if you have any questions
Thanks again Erick

These companion bills were introduced in late June as an attempt to fight back against the MUCC-backed and supported HBs 4567-69 Both bills would allow the commercial harvest of game fish In the bills commercial anglers would be allowed up to 20 percent of the sport fish quotas which would have to be created in most of the Great Lakes waters and up to 30 percent in Saginaw Bay This is an attempt by commercial anglers to be able to harvest and sell walleye perch and lake trout among other sport fish It is important to note that sport fish are reared and managed through recreational angler license sales and the Dingell-Johnson Act Commercial fishers pay nothing into the management of our sport fish In fact commercial anglers fees to hold their state license dont currently cover oversight of the program by the DNR Please contact your senator and representative today to let them know that sport fish should not be made available for commercial harvest To learn more about these bills that could destroy Michigans sport fishery click here MUCC opposes SB 389 and HB 4790

3) Stiffen penalties and fines for the harvest killing andor selling of game fish
4) Require GPS coordinates of nets be publicallyavailable

Great Lakes St Lawrence states and provinces meet to discuss Brandon Road project
The Great Lakes and St Lawrence states and provinces working to keep invasive Asian carp out of the lakes met in Chicago July 16 and 17 to discuss the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) proposed project at Brandon Road Lock and Dam
Under the direction of meeting facilitators from Kearns ampWest participants from Illinois Indiana Michigan Minnesota New York Ohio Ontario Pennsylvania Quebec Wisconsin and the Great Lakes Commission identified topics for advancing meeting outcomes as well as areas where more discussion is needed
This weeks meeting strengthened us as a coalition and kept the process moving forward said Dan Eichinger director Michigan Department of Natural Resources Of course there are still questions surrounding the design and cost of the plan but discussion helped to identify if not ease some of those concerns
Agenda items focused on regional support and efficacy concerns of partner agencies project cost and partnerships They discussed concerns surrounding ecology biodiversity and public water Additional points of discussion included structural technological and nonshystructural approaches to addressing the spread of Asian carp and the status of current efforts to address the issue
I think its safe to say that everyone came away having learned or accomplished something this week said Colleen Callahan director Iinois Department of Natural Resources The Brandon Road project wi not be a small undertaking and so detailed planning open discussion and ongoing communications are and will continue to be paramount as the process moves forward
The project as proposed by USACE and located at what is considered a key choke point in the fight against Asian carp would place additional electric barriers in the waterway to stop the invasive species from moving through the lock and dam It also would utilize an air bubble curtain to dislodge entrained fish Finay the plan would employ special underwater speakers while ships move through the locks to blast sound waves at decibels and frequencies to deter Asian carp movement from the downstream approach channel

On the flip side when you contact your representative please voice your support for House Bills 4567 4568 and 4569
MUCC supports these bills because they would
1) Protects game fish by preventing their addition to the commercial species list
2) Codifies a decades-old statute and regulations on commercial fishing
3) Stiffen penalties and fines for the harvest killing andor selling of game fish
4) Require GPS coordinates of nets be publicallyavailable
5) Outline how many violations a commercial angler can receive before their license is suspended
