APRIL - JUNE, 2019 - ISSUE - 17

“Efficiency is doing things right; Effectiveness is doing the right things” – Peter Drucker.

Siva Sivani Institute of Management emulates this quote to thrive in the dynamic business environment. While the first quarter of 2019 is an evidence of doing things right, the 2nd quarter focuses upon the right things done by the institute.

This issue highlights the outstanding honour conferred upon Smt. Aarathy Sampathy, President & Chief Executive, Siva Sivani Group of Institutions, by AsiaOne and the awards received by the institute from Competition Success Review and AsiaOne.

This brings to you new perspectives towards education by two generations – the Generation X and the Post-Millennial. The articles ignite reflective thoughts.

The path towards excellence has seen undeterred minds working in this direction and contributing significantly to academic research and corporate trainings.

Additionally, the 17th issue gives a glance of the contributions made to the society through participation in television talks.

“We have to do the best we are capable of. This is our sacred human responsibility” – Albert Einstein.

As every unit of Siva Sivani Institute of Management strives to do its best, Spoorthy – The Inspiration, proudly applauds and promotes the efforts.

EDUCATION IS FOR LIFE AND NOT FOR LIVING

Dr. V Jayalakshmi, Associate Professor – Finance

THE BARE TRUTH OF EDUCATIONMr. Jehangir Ali 2nd Year – PGDM – Marketing

Today, as soon as a child is born, the mad race begins, with reserving a seat in the best international school in the nearest vicinity. The burden of teaching A B C…1, 2, 3… first falls on the mother and she does not miss any opportunity to show case all that her child has learnt in the midst of relatives and friends. Children are forced to do things that they may not like but, no thought is given on this. The child has no room to think or space to vent his feelings. He is carried away in this mad rush of proving himself as the best and in trying to fulfill his parents’ wishes. In this whole long journey that he has undertaken, he has no clue of what he wants, what is his choice, what makes him happy and most importantly what is his goal in life. It’s like boarding a train with no idea as to, in which station to disembark! Hence, the need of the hour is to encourage children to take choice based decisions so that they get an opportunity to bloom and blossom in career that they would enjoy. Similarly, education has also lost its direction and purpose. What is the end of education? The answers of majority of students would be either to settle well in life, with a good fat salary or a dream house and

a car! Education is not for living, it is for life. Education must aim at the holistic development which encompasses physical, intellectual, emotional and social development. For this, education system must aim at developing life-skills which are important in life to live and progress. And we as teachers must act as reservoirs from which, through the process of education, students draw the elixir of education and life. Education must aim for self-transformation which must first begin at the personal level which is vyasthi ( ), which would then promote samasthi ( ) the feeling of oneness with all, which in turn would spread to srusthi ( ) the nature and ultimately help in realization and experiencing ( ) i.e. the Supreme. Thus, the end of education can be rightly said as Character. And character building is a conscious journey that one has to embark upon from childhood. As rightly said that if money is lost, nothing is lost, if health is lost, something is lost, but if Character is lost, everything is lost!!!

The things that matter are most often the benefits gained from life experiences and key events that are not immediately obvious. The

ability to manage time and prioritize tasks that were learned in a student’s undergraduate years clearly outweigh the bookish knowledge that was taught to us. Clearly, the more important skills that were gained and that are more likely to be used in our lives going forward are certainly more fundamental and basic than specific facts and figures. Then, is it that the degrees that we strive to possess are more representative of our abilities to learn these fundamental skills like managing time and stress, prioritizing tasks, adhering to deadlines rather than as gauges of how well we are able to regurgitate facts and figures? Every single exercise and question

that is posed and taught to us is, at its core meaning, simply a tool used to test abilities that may not be regarded as educational in nature at all. When a teacher gives you the task to finish six assignments in a week, one begs to ask the question behind such a request. It may be argued that the reason why a teacher does so is to test the student’s ability to think out of the box and find an easier solution to the problem rather than work for hours on end and manually solve each problem one by one, it could also be to test whether a student is able to manage time by taking what he learns by finishing one assignment and applying the best practices learned from experience to expedite the completion of the other assignments or it may simply be that the teacher is trying to gauge the student on whether or not the student buckles under stress or not. In

a more practical and relatable example, a famous kind of interview used by recruiters is called the stress interview, where a candidate is subjected to a barrage of stressful and difficult questions and is not allowed enough time to reply. The interesting point here is that the recruiters are not looking for each question to be answered quickly, rather, they are merely looking for a particular kind of behaviour from the candidate, a behaviour that reflects maturity and a high tolerance for stress and

pressure. Some popular entrance examinations to prestigious universities administer examinations that are analysed by the admissions committee as “the most proficient student is not the one who has answered the most questions correctly, it is the student that has answered the least questions wrong.”

So ask yourself, is your degree helping you to get your dream job? Or are you aiming for your dream job to justify your degree?
