It is difficult to believe that we are half way through term three. There are only 15 weeks left of the school year 135 days until Christmas, less than a month until father’s day (arguably the best day of the year) and less than a month until NRL finals start. This week I have managed to pull apart our results from the national testing. It is exciting to see that some areas of our learning have progressed much faster than the nation. In some areas the gains that our students have made are twice as fast as the nation. This is a credit to our students, supportive parents and our incredible staff. A survey recently was anonymously conducted with our students and it was alarming to find out that over 10% of our students indicated that they come to school without breakfast. We have all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and further information about this can be found in the article on the Kid Health website www.kidhealth.org . A good breakfast fuels you and gets you ready for the day. In general, kids and teens who eat breakfast have more energy, do better in school, and eat healthier throughout the day. Without breakfast, people can get irritable, restless, and tired. So please make time for breakfast — for you and your kids! Yesterday was ‘Cupcake Day’, an opportunity to raise money for the RSPCA and it was nice to see some of our parents come up to support this cause, as well as enjoy some very decadent cupcakes. For me it was a battle between the chocolate cupcake filled with M and M’s or the Ovaltine cakes with a marshmallow icing. The main problem was that I only got to try 4 out of 15 different flavours. A total of $365 was raised for an excellent cause. Attendance Congratulations to our year 5 students who received an award on parade for having the highest attendance. As a class group they have achieved 97% attendance for the last two weeks. In week two I discussed that “every day matters”. However I have noticed that there are a group of students who continually arrive late. Not only is this a challenge for the students arriving late because they often miss the initial instructions and miss time to set up for the day but it is also disruptive to the students who are already settled and learning. If possible please endeavour to have your child at school before the bell at 8:45 so that they have the best opportunity to start each day seamlessly. Continued over page…. Principal’s Report Continued..

Maths Team Challenge At lunch time yesterday we had our first full team meeting for the Maths Team Challenge, Dan, Justin, Ryan, Ben, Kaitlin, Ashley, Kane, Isaac and Braidy have joined the preliminary team. At this stage 9 students are trialling to make a team of 5 for the maths challenge on the 29th of August. These students are giving up their lunch time, working through challenging problems both individually and as a team. Curriculum at Home When reading, one area that is the most challenging for our students is the ability to infer. Inferring is reading between the lines, using clues in the text and their prior knowledge to understand the message that isn’t stated directly. This is an important comprehension skill as is creates a deeper understanding of what your child has read. Language your child could use when inferring:

Reading between the lines, I think…. I would expect that…… I already know that…… so I think….. In my experience……. I think the author is really trying to say……. I think the character behaved like that because…… I think what’s really going on is….. I wonder if….

Remember, as a parent the more you can read with your child the better. Always try and ask your child questions about what they have read and if you can ask them inferential questions that will support this area of development.

YEAR 10 POETRY

Endangered species

Endangered species should not be hunted Unless you wish to be confronted By the police with a gun Then you won’t think it’s so fun You’ll stop right there and think twice That hunting animals is not so nice

A year later you will forget about that And go with mates to hunt a numbat You don’t get caught this time So you keep committing this awful crime After you try many times You get caught and get a massive fine

Next time you try and be smarter You wear camouflage and run faster This time you go for something bigger Just as you’re about to pull the trigger A Javan rhino rams you from behind You hit a rock and now you are blind You sit at home lonely and bored And remember that time the lion roared You dream of hunting every night Then the Your only dream was to catch a giant panda But now your life is just a bit blander

The animals try to live life to the fullest But no you have to be the cruellest You think of the old times every night And all the animals with faces full of fright The tiger, monkey and elephant to Also the turtle, gorilla and hyena crew

Arrows shooting through the air The animals are getting quite a scare Filled with pain and sorrow Do you have a tissue I can borrow? That flamenco just got hunted The population growth has just been stunted

With all this hunting I really need to stress The smell of dead animals is causing a big mess The little girl wants to see a panda But she just saw one get shot from the veranda All our animals are dead I will just have to google them instead

Hockey Fun!Hockey Fun!Hockey Fun!Hockey Fun!

Our 4/5 and 6/7 classes have had such a great time learning about hockey this term. They are completing a four week ‘get to know hockey’ program with Ben from Gympie Hockey coming out each week to coach the kids. We have looked at both the attacking and defending skills needed for the game and the kids have had a blast! The program will finish this week, however if your child has shown a real interest in the sport, contact Gympie Hockey for more information or a pamphlet is available from the school.
