GREETINGS

G r e e t i n g s t o a l l o f our brethren. Liberty Lodge hopes that everyone is staying well and dry with the sudden occurrence of storms we have had.

The lodge has been busy with degree work as usual. We were happy to confer the degree of an Entered Apprentice Mason on our now Brother, Dana Adam Kohl. He should finish up his degree work by the end of the summer.

Our June business meeting was held on June 5. Liberty Lodge will probably be providing some chaperons for the Masonic Marching Band camp to be held in July. Those wishing to volunteer for this worthwhile event may contact Secretary W.B. Bruce Watkins. Any brother can participate, especially those who have some knowledge or training in the medical field. Those individuals would be greatly appreciated.

The lodge also made a donation to the Masonic Youth Foundation to be used for the t r iennial Youth Leadership Conference. This event will be held October 18-19 in Kearney. The conference will focus on leadership skills, and motivation. Confidence,

optimism, integrity, trust, respect, opportunity, and self-esteem are also emphasized. More information is available on the Grand Lodge of Nebraska web site. www.glne.org

A committee has been now formed to undertake a task which has been long overdue, the re-writing and updating of our Lodge bylaws. The last revision was in 1969 and many things have changed. Updating our bylaws will help strengthen our lodge and give our new Brothers a better understanding of what is needed to be a strong lodge Brother and a tremendous asset to Masonry. Keeping the “old” ideas of what Masonry is while trying to update our actions and conduct in our lodge is vital to this task. The committee will consist of Chair W.B. Wade Kendle, Right W.Bro. Bruce Watkins, W.B. Bob Foreman, W.B. Jim Batten, and Bro. Randy Cox. The committee is looking to have this done by the fall.

Liberty Lodge hopes all our brethren will enjoy their summer. Just remember that it’s less than 2 month till football season. We urge those who have not been to Lodge for awhile, for whatever reason to come to Lodge to renew old friendships and make some new ones.

PAST MASTERS’ MEMORIAL CEREMONY

On Fri., May 23, Lancaster Lodge 54 observed the 92nd Annual Past Masters’ Day. In its 134 year history, 126 men have served the lodge as Worshipful Master. Of the 28 living past masters 15, including 2 past Grand Masters, were in attendance. The highlight of the night was the performance of the Past Masters’ Memorial, which has been essentially unchanged for several years. A flower was placed on the altar for the 97 men who served in the East of 54 and have passed to the Celestial Lodge. We commend their earthly remains to the ground, their memories to our hearts, and their spirit to God who gave it. A special thanks to Amy Bloomquist, Temple Chapter 271’s Organist, for playing the piano and also to W.B. Wade Kendle of Liberty Lodge 300 for his outstanding and moving a cappella rendition of “The Lord’s Prayer”.

BUSINESS MEETING

T h e J u n e r e g u l a r communication was held on June 6. At that meeting, 7 masons became

affiliated with Lancaster 54. They are Bro.’s Lewis Nelson, Benjamin Nelson, Cory Brannen, Gene Kelley, Michael O’Connell, Andrew Munger, and Christopher Paulson. One new petition for degrees and one petition for affiliation were read.

The following week, June 11, Bro. John Gerber was raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason. W.B. Patrick Barger presided in the East for the degree.

Things will slow down a bit for summer at Lancaster 54. A reminder that since the first Friday in July falls on Independence Day, our regular communication will take place on the second Fri., July 11.

Some sad news to tell you all. Our W.M. Amy Johnson and new husband are moving out of Nebraska and are moving to Cheyenne, Wyoming within the next few months. Sis. Amy will be missed by all, We wish you all the luck in your new venture. I think that is all for now See ya in July.

BUSINESS MEETING

Bro. Mark Poston and Sis. Jeanie prepared the June Business Meeting meal serving ham balls and a potato casserole. You’ve set the bar rather high for mere mortals. There has been very little news this month other than the Lodge proficiency examination in the EA and Fellowcraft Degrees, June 11. It was a little rough, but for a first timer with tornado warning sirens blaring, I think it went well. We have an Entered Apprentice Degree scheduled, June 18 and a Ladies at the Table, June 25. This will be reported next month.

BRAN MUFFINS

The couple were 85 years old, and had been married for sixty years. Though they were far from rich, they managed to get by because they watched their pennies. Though not young, they were both in very good health, largely due to the wife’s insistence on healthy foods and exercise for the last decade. One day, their good health didn’t help when they went on a rare vacation and their plane crashed, sending them off to Heaven. They reached the pearly gates, and St. Peter escorted them inside. He took them to a beautiful mansion, furnished in gold and fine silks, with a fully stocked kitchen and a waterfall in the master bath. A maid could be seen hanging their favorite clothes in the closet.

They gasped in astonishment when he said, ‘Welcome to Heaven. This will be your home now.’ The old man asked Peter how much all this was going to cost. ‘Why, nothing,’ Peter replied, ‘remember, this is your reward in Heaven.’ The old man looked out the window and right there he saw a championship golf course, finer and more beautiful than any ever built on Earth. ‘What are the greens fees?’ grumbled the old man. ‘This is heaven,’ St. Peter replied. ‘You can play for free, every day.’ Next they went to the clubhouse and saw the lavish buffet lunch, with Every imaginable cuisine laid out before them, from seafood to steaks to exotic deserts, free flowing beverages. ‘Don’t even ask,’ said St. Peter to the man. This is Heaven, it is all free for you to enjoy.’ The old man looked around and glanced nervously at his wife. ‘Well, where are the low fat and low cholesterol foods, and the decaffeinated tea?’ he asked. ‘That’s the best part,’ St. Peter replied. ‘You can eat and drink as much as you like of whatever you like, and you will never get fat or sick. This is Heaven!’ The old man pushed, ‘No gym to work out at?’ ‘Not unless you want to,’ was the answer. ‘No testing my sugar or blood pressure or...’ Never again. All you do here is enjoy yourself.’ The old man glared at his wife and said, ‘You and your bran muffins. We could have been here ten years ago!

This is it, until next month!

STATED MEETING The stated meeting of

Temple Chapter 271 was held on Mon., June 2 at 7:30 PM. The meeting was opened in regular form by Worthy Matron Carolyn Plants. The minutes of the May meeting were read and approved.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Sis. Carolyn obtained the Masonic Band scholarship form from the Grand Lodge. Bro. Carl Plants moved that we give $225.00 to support a member of the Masonic Band. The motion was seconded and passed. Note - It was determined that the reason we had not originally received the form was that Temple Chapter’s name had been accidentally omitted from the Grand Lodge mailing list. This has been corrected.

Correspondence was read, including the new Scottish Rite building scheduling policy. A copy of the policy will be sent to each line officer for their notebooks and a copy will be placed on file.

NEW BUSINESS

We received our Purple Ribbon signifying membership in the Masonic Home for Children’s Purple Ribbon Club.

We received a certificate from Nebraska Grand Chapter signifying that we had initiated new members during the 2007-2008 “Step Up to the Stars” year.

Sis. Mary Ann Townsend moved that Temple Chapter host a reception on Sun., July 20 for our

Bro. Carl Plants, newly installed Grand Sentinel, NE Grand Chapter. The motion was seconded and passed. Sis. Mary Ann has already formed her committee to help serve the reception. Sis. Carolyn announced that Sis. Mary Ann will be Carl’s Chairman for the coming year. Bro. Carl and Sis. Carolyn will be hosting lunch before the reception for those who help serve.

Sis. Carolyn proposed that we have a family picnic on the evening of Mon., June 16. Sis. Mary Ann moved that we have the picnic; motion was seconded and passed. Sis. Carolyn will investigate which park shelter is available and let people know. It will be a pot luck with each person bringing their own meat to grill or pre-cooked main dish.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Sis. Carolyn announced that she and Bro. Carl became grandparents again with the birth of Aspen Jo, daughter of Jaime and Kent Hemmerling, born May 21 and weighing 7 lb. 6 oz.

The City Line Officers meeting is Sat., June 07 at 4:30 PM.

BROTHERS REMEMBER 71-YEAR MEMBER BRO. DON HIPPLE

On May 29, Bro. Donald O . H i p p l e , o u r J o r d a n Medal Holder, a scended to the Celestial Lodge above. Funeral services were June 2

at First Presbyterian Church, with Brothers Ron Wallick as orator, and Jason Phelps, Douglas Johnson and Paul Hadley performing the Masonic funeral ceremony at Wyuka cemetery.

Hipple, 94, was a native of Pender who attended Midlands College, Fremont, where he earned a diploma in business in 1935 and a Bachelor of Arts degree in education in 1936. He also was a track letter winner, played in the college band, and was a member of the M-Club consumer group.

Our Brother was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason in 1937 in Nebraska Lodge 202, Pender, and transferred to College View Lodge 320 in 1940.

He was a teacher at Sholes and Laurel and received a Master of Arts from the University of Nebraska in 1940. He then taught commercial instruction, coached football and sponsored the Hy-Y Club at College View High School in Lincoln – where he met his future wife, Gladys Bauman.

In 1942 Hipple enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed on the islands of Oahu, Maui and Hawaii, and in Washington, D.C., as an ensign in the Pacific Fleet’s counter intelligence program.

He and Gladys married in 1945 at First Presbyterian Church; after the war he resumed teaching before taking a position with the Veterans Administration in Lincoln.

Being a visionary, Hipple recognized the need for affordable housing, so he created Sky View Mobile Home Ranch in Lincoln in the late 1940s and expanded the business in 1966 by purchasing another mobile home park in Bellevue. The Hipple’s were seasoned world travelers who enjoyed journeys with the Holiday Ramblers and Conestoga Campers travel clubs.

He is survived by Gladys, their two sons, a daughter-in-law, four grandchildren and Donald’s sister.

Hipple was a member of First Presbyterian Church, American Legion Post 3, Downtown Lincoln Kiwanis, Sesostris Shrine, and Hiram Club and was past

president of Lancaster Mobile Home Association and Nebraska Manufactured Housing Association.

MANY HANDS MAKE TEMPLE YARDWORK

LIGHTER

Spring storms played havoc with the clean-up day schedule, but a team of four Brothers power raked and mowed the lawn – filling 27 bags of clippings – applied herbicide and cleaned out the window wells around the facility.

Members of the organizations that meet at College View Temple continue ongoing volunteer efforts to maintain the grounds, as well as the building’s interior.

At the May 7 Lodge meeting, Brothers were updated abou t the upcoming roof replacement project and discussed possible improvements to the rest of the building’s exterior.

PROFICIENCY PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

On May 7, Right W.Bro. Bruce Watkins declared our Lodge proficient in opening and closing in all three degrees. A frequent guest of the Brethren here, he noted after the examination, “That was by far the best you’ve done as a lodge – I can tell that you’ve had productive practices, and I’ll be pleased to inform the Grand Custodian that you’ve done well.”

Our donation for a student scholarship to the annual Masonic All-Star Marching Band Camp was delivered to the Grand Lodge.

PAST MASTERS’ BANQUET ALL ABOUT

HISTORY

Right W.Bro. Russ Reno was the keynote speaker May 21 for our annual Past Masters’ Banquet at The Knolls. His observations culled from researching 150 years of Nebraska Masonic history entertained our members and guests.

He noted, “I gained an understanding of the times and the people while reading our Brothers’ comments and their actions at critical points in our history. In addition, I discovered the depth of the principles we espouse at every meeting.” Reno told about expressions of brotherly love and some humorous anecdotes, too.

“As I read the 150 Proceedings, I was impressed with the role that Freemasonry played in the lives of those included on the pages,” he concluded. “Masonry truly is a guiding light to men around the world … our Lodges are

not clubs or civic organizations, but opportunities for us to study how to make ourselves, and those we interact with, better.”

JUNE 4 BUSINESS REVEALED

College View Lodge 320 will be dark (no business meetings) during July and August unless a regular meeting is called by W.M. Jason Phelps to receive petitions.

We received a Purple Ribbon award for our continuing support of the Fremont Home for Children’s 4-H Club livestock program. “The use of livestock in conjunction with the 4-H Club provides an extraordinary setting for children to learn about themselves, build their self-confidence and care about another living being,” wrote Ben Harvey, Executive Director of the Home.

Lancaster County Board of Commissioners approved our application for exemption from property tax on our Lodge.

B r o . D i c k B r o m m e r provided the Masonic Education for the evening, recounting the extraordinary life and success of Bro. Marion Morrison (John Wayne). The actor turned down the role of “Dirty Harry” but recommended Clint Eastwood, and he turned down the role of Matt Dillon in “Gunsmoke” and instead recommended James Arness.

W.M. Jason Phelps is planning a BBQ for open house/petition drive in late August or September.

W.B. Bob Brommer, chairman of the Committee on Work, is planning a Lodge Officers’ training program for a Sat. in September.

Thanks to Bethel 60 of the Job’s Daughters for planting and tending the memorial garden by the flag pole and a flower bed in the front of the building. These were planted with flowering annuals and look spectacular.

O u r n e i g h b o r h o o d sustained three high wind, severe thunderstorms. The large tree curbside of the lodge was damaged, resulting in downed branches that Lincoln Electric System crews had to remove. The gutter on the south side of the building also came down in the storm, and some shingles were blown off, but the roof membrane was not damaged so the building did not sustain any interior water damage. The crew from John D. Vermaas Construction, acting on behalf of Hickman Lodge, will replace the roof when they are available.

Thanks to everyone that made donations to this renovation project -- and if you haven’t, p lease consider doing so .

PAST MASTERS’ NIGHT

Food and fun were abundant at our Past Masters’ Night on May 20. Many Past Masters came including some not recently seen in Lodge. A fine catered dinner of roast beef got the evening started, with lots of conversation included.

25-YEAR PIN

Our Worshipful Master Virgil Meints presented a 25-year membership pin to our Senior Deacon Kevin Lindsay. Bro. Kevin, who is an assistant professor of military science at UNL, recently took dual membership in our Lodge; his home Lodge is in Iowa. He will be gone from Lincoln for a while starting in August for an assignment as a professor at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, KS. His family will remain in Lincoln.

We met Bro. Kevin’s Daughter Sarah, who had just graduated from South Dakota State University.

FUN WITH HISTORY

A highlight of our Past Masters’ Night was an entertaining and educational talk and pictures about the Lincoln of yesterday by Jim McKee, one of Lincoln’s best historians. He awakened our memories of such places as Ken Eddy’s drive-in restaurant at 48th and O streets, the big root-beer mug at 33rd and O, plus many other Lincoln landmarks, mostly long gone. It was a fun evening not to be missed.

CORRECTION

In my June correspondence about Bro. Adam Brinkman’s transfer to Fort Lewis, WA, I put the wrong mountain near Fort Lewis. It is Mount Rainier that looms above the Army post, not Mount Shasta.

Next month : p ic tu res and a glowing description of our June 17 Charter Night.

GRAND ASSEMBLY

The members of Lincoln Assembly 6 enjoyed their time at the 63rd Annual Session of the Nebraska Grand Assembly June 13-15 in Crete. The “Home on the Range” session of Nebraska’s Grand Worthy Advisor, Christine Harriman from Benson Diana Assembly in Omaha, encouraged Nebraska members of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls to “Cherish the Past, Challenge the Present, and Chase the Future.” In addition to the regular business meetings and initiation, members enjoyed spending time with friends from the other assemblies, many fun activities, and drawings and a live auction to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity. All members of Nebraska Grand Assembly were honored to have Mrs. Marie Renda, Supreme Worthy Advisor, in attendance for the weekend activities and sessions. Mrs. Renda was initiated into Rainbow Girls in Omaha as a young girl.

The 2007-2008 Grand Officers from Lincoln included Junior Grand Executive Board member, Anne Bowen, Grand Worthy Assoc. Advisor, Cassandra Birdsall, Grand Faith, Elizabeth Bowen, Grand Love, Nicki Folsom, and Grand Musician, Allison Burris. Jessica Rodriquez participated as Grand Representative to Alabama, Kentucky, and Maine. Miss Rodriquez received the award for Best Representation of her states for her presentation during the Parade of States at Fun Night. Zoe Maurer gave the tribute to the American flag, Michaela Whitesell served as a Grand Page, and Shelby Plummer as an Assistant Grand Outer Observer. Miss Maurer, Madi Piepho, and Pamela McLeod sang in the choir. Pam Folsom served as State Rainbow Mom during the past year and at Grand Assembly. Cass Birdsall and Anne and Elizabeth Bowen received their Majority in the Majority service on June 14. We are confident they will continue to be involved in Rainbow as adults.

HONORS AND REWARDS

Lincoln Assembly members and adults received many honors and awards during the Grand Assembly weekend. Allison Burris, Nicki Folsom, Liz Alderson, Greg Mason, and Robyn Throckmorton received the Grand Cross of Color during the initiatory ceremony on June 14. Ann Whitesell was presented with a Service to Rainbow award. This award is presented to adults who have provided some type of service to Rainbow. Mrs. Whitesell donated her time and talent to cut the hair of 14 adults and Rainbow Girls, which was subsequently donated to Locks of Love, last year at Grand Assembly. The Assembly received third place

for their scrapbook. A gold award for Assembly of Excellence was earned for accomplishment of the Assembly’s goals during the past year. Miss McLeod received a first place finish for her participation in the ritual competition in her age group and Miss Whitesell a second place finish in her age group. The team of Miss Whitesell, Miss Rodriquez, and Miss Plummer received third place in the Assembly Room set-up competition. Miss Plummer received a Dad Walt Miller award for being first line signer on three petitions and Miss Burris received a Dad Walt Miller award for the second time.

INSTALLATION

Offices and honors for the 2008-2009 year were announced on June 15 with the Installation ceremony occurring later in the day. Shelby Plummer was announced as Miss Nebraska Rainbow and Robyn Throckmorton as State Rainbow Mom for the upcoming year. Nicki Folsom and Allison Burris were installed as Grand Treasurer and Grand Chaplain, respectively. Jessica Rodriquez and Michaela Whitesell were installed as Grand Representative. Shelby Plummer, Zoe Maurer, and Pamela McLeod served as Pages during

the Installation ceremony. Adults from Lincoln Assembly serving as installing officers were Past Grand Worthy Advisors Christine Bryant, Installing Officer, and Jennifer Birdsall, Installing Chaplain.

The new Grand Worthy Advisor for Nebraska is Caryn Stuhr from Westside Assembly 22 in Omaha. The theme for the next year is “Dream Big” with a motto of “Faith makes all things possible; Love makes all things easy; Hope makes all things work.” Lincoln Assembly members are looking forward to Grand travels and visitations on June 25 to 29 that will include an Installation of Officers at Lincoln Assembly on June 28.

SUPREME ASSEMBLY

Several Lincoln Assembly members and adults as well as other Nebraska Rainbow Girls and adults will be attending Supreme Assembly in Chicago. Nebraska is honored to be providing the Grand Cross of Color team at Supreme in July. Cassandra Birdsall is serving as the Master of Ceremonies and Anne and Elizabeth Bowen as vocalists for the Grand Cross team.

JOIN US

Lincoln Assembly encourages you to contact Mother Advisor Jennifer Birdsall ([email protected]) if you know of girls and young women aged 11 to 20 in the Lincoln area that may be interested in membership in Rainbow Girls. The Assembly members would welcome the opportunity to share the gift of service and Rainbow with them. Meetings are held at the Scottish Rite Temple on the second and fourth Tuesdays at 6:30 PM. As always, members of the Masonic family are invited to attend any of the Assembly’s meetings and activities.

Greg Mason, Nicki Folsom, Allison Burris, Liz Alderson, and Robyn Throckmorton received the Grand Cross of Color award at Nebraska Grand Assembly on June 14 for their service to theInternational Order of the Rainbow for Girls.
