Dirt to pavement, the USA and Europe, day rides and camping trips, he has experienced all weather conditions; riding through it or parked waiting for it to pass. After all his years riding, he decided motorcycle covers needed a redesign that offered better protection, ease of installation, and packed—ready for travel. So, Shady Products LLC became a joint venture for Tom and his son Bennett. They design covers that motorcyclist can carry, use, and trust to protect their motorcycles from the elements and the weather.

Member Prof i leNew member profileHello, we are Paul and Marsha Minock and we’re excited to be a part of the BMWMCC. We’re originally from Michigan and moved to Colorado in 2005. Joining the club is part of the evolution of our love for motorcycling which began long before meeting back in 1982.

My motorcycling history began at the age of 6 when envying my older brother’s Honda Trail 70. It wasn’t until 6 years later that I acquired a Yamaha YZ80 motocross bike which was the true beginning of my love for riding. A couple other bikes during my teenage years fueled my interest and during this time, Marsha was also challenging her brothers on her family’s dirt bikes. We met in high school but didn’t ride with each other until I got my first street bike, a Suzuki GS 450. I acquired it just days after my high school graduation and my mother’s first words as I pulled into the garage were, “tell me that’s not yours!” At the time, I thought I knew everything but I learned moments later that graduation money was meant to go towards a college education and not a new motorcycle. She made that abundantly clear. It was on this 450 that Marsha and I found we were perfect riding partners. She knew when to lean, when not to, and most importantly, when to just hang on tight.

We were married in 1990 and within three years had produced two wonderful children, Kegan and Kane. A short hiatus in motorcycling took place as raising our family and interests in cars, boats, and house renovations caused a shortage of time and money. We were back in the saddle again, though, in 2000 when we purchased a Harley Fatboy which since has taken us from coast to coast and border to border. Joining a local riding club allowed us to meet a lot of new friends and we enjoyed participating in the rides and fund raisers. Both our boys were afforded the opportunity to enjoy motorcycling as I would take them on club rides as well as long three day ventures. We also explored Colorado’s back country on our ATVs for several years but as they grew older, only our youngest took an interest in motor sports. Marsha and Kane took a riding course last summer and both earned their cycle endorsement. Kane purchased a motorcycle with his graduation money as I did so I guess what goes around comes around.

For the past thirteen years, I’ve gotten together with a friend of mine from Michigan for an annual motorcycle adventure. Alaska was calling

our names last year and a bit of research showed that conventional street bikes would not take us to all the places we wanted to visit. Renting an F800GS was my entry to the world of BMW. This machine was incredible with its power, handling and its ability to go on and off road. While riding the Dalton Highway back from the Arctic Circle, a thought crossed my mind: I want to offer this type of riding experience to people who come to Colorado! I presented the idea of starting a motorcycle rental business to Marsha immediately upon my return home and 6 months later Rocky Mountain Motorcycle Adventures, LLC became a legal entity in the town of Parker. (www.DualSportRental.com) Our Dual Sport motorcycles are ready for the road and we’re anxious to expand our riding resume and to share our passion for riding with others.

Marsha and I have been together for 31 years, have two grown children whom we are very proud of, and have a past filled with wonderful memories. Motorcycling has been an integral part of this legacy and we hope to continue on the same path. Life is good!

A Year of RidingI thought I’d reminisce a little about a year of riding since I rode 18,000 miles. Reunions and Rallys would be the theme (if I had one).

It started with a week’s riding to, from, and in Death Valley, California. Don Bates, Steve Whiteside and I rode from here and met Jeff Clark at the Texas Springs Campground on April 2nd, 2012. We rode through a pretty good snow storm for about 20 miles before we got to Richfield, Utah where we spent the night in a KOA cabin. We were surrounded by a snowstorm at that point so we spent the night and rode on to Death Valley the next day. Incidentally, we did this ride again this year. Death Valley is fascinating. Especially if you have a guide like Jeff Clark who knows all the dirt roads.

April is about the last month one can comfortably ride in Death Valley. We had one day of 100 degrees while most days were in the 80’s. A couple years ago Siggi and I saw 107 degrees in the shade on May 7th. Wind was the bigger problem and we had our tents loaded up with rocks INSIDE to keep them on the ground in the general vicinity of where they were set up. The tents of some others blew clear away from the campsite. Death Valley is worth a visit for anyone, and 500 miles on dirt will get you to interesting places and history. Old mines, old graveyards, including that of Shorty Harris, a “Single Blanket Jackass Prospector” laid to rest “in the valley he loved,” ghost towns, lowest point in America, salt creeks, craters, warm springs you can bathe in, and interesting geology. Probably the best examples of Alluvial Fans you’ll ever see, Scotty’s castle, canyons, sand dunes and on and on. I’d recommend Death Valley Days for anyone. Remember President Ronald Reagan’s “Death Valley Days” on television?

There were two motorcycle rallies in July. Christa and I rode to the first one for four days in Paonia, Colorado for our annual State BMW rally. A couple weeks later I rode with Siggi and Dave Adair to the National Rally in Sedalia, MO. Missouri is aptly called “Misery” since it was 110 to 116 degrees on that trip (that was in the sun, but that was where we were riding). I wouldn’t ride to Missouri again in July on a motorcycle. There is no way to keep cool enough to be comfortable. The rally was well run and well attended with about 5,000 people. We bumped into old friends there too, Bruce and Miranda Sanders to name two.

By Dennis O’NealThen I made a trip to Sturgis for the annual Harley Motorcycle Rally in August. Now that’s an experience for ‘ya. They say every motorcyclist should see Sturgis at least once. I’ve been there 3 or 4 times and I’m asking myself why? There were a lot of “bikers” there. Upwards of half a million. Mostly Harley’s. I spent most of my time riding dirt roads in the Black Hills. Remote, lonely, heavily forested and beautiful. Easy to see why the Indians revered these mountains. Most of time there’s no one on these roads since most Harley’s rarely venture far from town or off paved roads. A Harley rally is interesting for a BMW rider for various reasons too. I’ve been cursed and chased (on a previous trip). Probably because I ride differently than they do. It might have been because I had to cut in on them when they’re tightly spaced and going too slow? But we had great fun. Even women who seem to like riding on the back of these Harley’s cursed me. This kind of tells you the essential difference between Harley and BMW riders. Most of us actually know how to ride, but we don’t get as many women to ride on back, (don’t know why). And, our women don’t swear at strangers (I’m probably missing something essential here, but I don’t know what). Actually I don’t know if our women would cuss or not since not enough ladies even ride on the back of BMW’s to find out. Christa rides on the back of mine but she wouldn’t swear—would she?

Here’s another difference. At one point I got snowed out of the higher elevations on a dirt road and had to come down to a paved road. It was still snowing but the roads were not slick so I was able to keep going at a reasonable speed. NO HARLEYS were running—Not ONE! Nicht! NADA! Dozens of Harleys pulled off the road and parked under trees with their riders and passengers standing in the snow, getting wet, watching me go by and wondering how a BMW can keep going? At first I thought they were stopped for a picnic or something because there were so many of them, then I realized there was no purpose. They were just standing there in the snow getting wet. It made no sense whatsoever. In fact, in a few minutes I was in a low enough altitude that it quit snowing. Strange behavior that I’ve seen dozens of times, usually when it rains and the Harley’s either hide under a bridge or a few try to keep going, but dangerously slow.

In September I made a fast motorcycle trip back to California for our official 59/60th high school reunion in September. There were so few of us in those classes, 13 and 20, that we have combined these reunions in order to come up with a quorum. I think we had about 20 classmates, including my brother Hugh and his wife, Mardy. Our main dinner for this affair was at a beautiful location on Clear Lake. The home of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Rogers, class of ‘52. And this reunion coincided with the annual “Pear Festival.” Lake County was well known for “Lake County Mountain Bartlett Pears” when I was in school, but may be better known for wine making today. Now they have a Pear Festival but fewer pears. In fact, I worked in a field that later became the first vineyard for Kendal Jackson Wines—maker of the most popular Chardonnay in America. Needless to say I was the only one on a motorcycle. One person had a “walker.” Some classmates had passed.

Michael and I want to express our gratitude to so many club members for your thoughts, prayers, and support after my accident. We love and appreciate each of you so much! I thought you might be interested in some details of the crash.

We left MotoGear with a group of 14 on a ride to Poudre Canyon. It was the second day I had used contacts and I was still getting used to them. One contact was for reading and one was for distance and I could see things so much clearer, but my mind was still adjusting to seeing things in this pairing. After riding a while we stopped on the side of the road and Cathy asked how my contacts were doing. She warned me to be careful passing cars because depth perception can be a problem with these contacts.

About 20 minutes later we were riding the Narrows in Poudre Canyon in Fort Collins when I passed a car. I looked behind me and thought I had enough clearance. As I merged into the right lane, my right pannier case touched the front bumper of the car. The car must have slowed down because I ended up in front of the car and I kept control of my motorcycle across the lane but ended up in the dirt on the shoulder. I still had control of the bike even in the dirt and thought I could recover and get back on the pavement until I hit a snow pole marker that was 4’ from the road. The pole ripped my right mirror off and pressed my right brake lever causing my front tire to stop and turn sharply to the right and the bike to immediately fall to the left. I was fortunate to crash in a wide area of dirt and not near one of the rock walls. I landed on my left shoulder but fortunately had all my riding gear on – helmet, padded jacket and riding pants. I laid on the ground dazed when Mike Szabo and Dave & Lisa (who were behind me) stopped and helped me. Thank you! We had no cell service so Mike then rode down the mountain and called 911. I was told that I did not lose consciousness. Michael was ahead of me and when he realized I was not behind him, he turned around and saw me on the ground. He asked me my name, what day it was, etc. Several people covered me with their coats and the young men in the car had a pillow they put under my head.

In a few minutes a paramedic team showed up. They put me on a stretcher and asked if they could cut my motorcycle jacket off me. I emphatically said no so they pulled the jacket off one arm, put me on the board and Michael pulled the jacket off the other arm. I was taken by volunteer ambulance to the bottom of the canyon where I was transferred to a Poudre Valley Hospital ambulance and taken to the hospital. The ride was about 30 minutes and Michael followed the ambulance on his bike.

Several friends stayed with the bike (thanks Pete!) and they picked up both of my rear view mirrors that were ripped off and put them in my trunk. Dave and Lisa gathered my personal belongings and brought them to the hospital…thank you ever so much!

Sincere Thanks!

I was in Poudre ICU for three days and had multiple CAT scans to determine my injuries: 5 broken ribs, 3” broken scapula, perforated spleen with internal bleeding, fractured clavicle, concussion, and hematoma on the left side of the brain. The second night in Poudre ICU I lost a significant amount of blood because the spleen was bleeding internally requiring a transfusion of 2 units of blood.

During my hospital stays I had several wonderful, cheery visitors…Terry, Dave, Lisa, and Roxanne, Suzanne & Steve, Jeff Burns, Sharon, Cathy, Robin, my friend Karen, our Pastor- Dave Risendal, my Dad (who lives in Raleigh, NC but happened to be in town this weekend), and our children. Thank you!

On Monday, because a large snow storm was coming they had to move me earlier than expected. So, I was transferred by ambulance to Swedish Hospital with a crew of 5 to take care of me. It was a 2 hour journey in the ambulance. I spent another 2 days in ICU there before I was downgraded to the multi-trauma unit. At Swedish I had more visitors to cheer me up…Suzanne & Steve again, Cathy, Sharon, Pastor Dave, and my friend Karen. (If I’ve forgotten anyone, please forgive me!)

I was able to go home on Friday, April 12th and it was wonderful to not be pricked and prodded all night. My daughter Abby spent the first week with me at home and my Mom has been with me for over a week. I so appreciate my care givers!

Thanks to Deb & Dean for coming over for a visit and making us a yummy dinner… thanks to Cathy & Carl for some great pizza and a visit… and thanks to Sharon for bringing lunch and making dinner and some amazing crepes. Thanks to St. Peter Lutheran Church for their prayers and some wonderful meals.

The BMWMCC is the best group of friends … thank you ever so much for your thoughts, prayers, and support. I’m still taking some strong meds for the pain, but I’m up and active and every day I’m getting a little better.

Cheers!

Keren

P.S. I’m shopping for a new bike so if you have any leads, let me know. I’ve already replaced my helmet.

I made a 2nd motorcycle trip to Bakersfield, California to attend the 100th birthday party of my Grandfathers’ nephew, Ross Thornton, on November 24th. Ross is still hale and hearty, full of fun and living alone, but with nearby family, in Bakersfield, California. (Look this up—you’ll enjoy it, Rufus1912.blogspot.com).
