Muncy’s Message Broncos,

As I look back on the 2010/2011 school year, I recognize that there have been

many great accomplishments to be celebrated. Student success can be calculated

on a variety of levels – academics, athletics, fine arts and service projects just to

name a few. Each DHS event is meaningful and motivating to the students who

participate and having a significant impact on the target audience – be it a

concert, a Veteran’s day celebration or a Christmas party for the students at Ann

Windle. Accomplishments and success come in all shapes and sizes.

With accomplishment and success comes appreciation. I have always

proclaimed that as long as I spend my time with high school kids I will never

grow old. Although I may not look it, at heart I feel blessed. The faculty and

staff at DHS are thankful to have a great student body and we applaud their hard

work and effort. The students are energetic and full of surprises. What a great

job we have.

An unknown author wrote, “The best teachers teach from the heart, not from

the book.” Although there are many adjectives that can be used to describe the

faculty and staff at Denton High School, “Passionate” is the word I wish to use.

It is their inspiration that leads our students to great accomplishments and acts of

greatness throughout the year. I am once again lucky to work with such a great

group of caring individuals.

Finally, I send my appreciation to the parents/guardians. Thank you for all

you do in helping us prepare your child for life. We always appreciate your

support when trying to direct your student down a different path beyond the

hallowed halls of high school. There are many obstacles in life and hopefully

our efforts in preparing your child will be beneficial to them at some time in the

future.

Thanks for a great year and enjoy the summer.

See most of you soon,

Darrell

Special Education Prom

Coach Amanda Byers and Coach Sarah Hirsch teamed up their Partners Art and Partners PE classes to host a prom for the special education adapted life skills and life skills classes on May 5, 2011. It was held in the DHS Gym 1 during the

first two periods of the day when students would normally be in art and PE classes. This was the first DHS special education prom, and the students had a great time.

Partners Art and PE classes pair up general education students with special education students as a learning experience for all students. It‟s proved to be a very successful endeavor.

Class of 2013 News

A big “thank you” goes out to all of the sophomore parents and students involved in our first successful fundraiser at Chili‟s. We will soon be involved in a number of additional fundraisers so please stay tuned for a number of events over the next few

weeks as well as the summer months. STUDENTS…log onto the DHS website under the Class of 2013 icon as well as Facebook to sign up and volunteer for the upcoming events. With your help and support your senior year and graduation will

be spectacular. Stand by for our first community service event. Class of 2013…you are creating a legacy and making an impact on your high school and community!

HOMECOMING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Homecoming comes early again next year, with the annual PTSA-sponsored dance being held on Sept. 10

th, 2011.

This is the most fun you will have volunteering, I promise, but we will have to have a couple of meetings over the summer, to shore up plans and allow us to hit the floor running when school starts. Most committee chairs have been filled, so you don‟t need to worry about being coerced into heading a committee yourself, just helping in the many areas needing your assistance.

Our theme involves Super Heroes and I am still looking for someone to help Chair Decorations, as well as someone who will take over Ticket Sales. Decorations are a lot of fun, and

you will have plenty of help in that area. Even if you don‟t want to chair the committee, we really need help with ideas and building decorations over the summer, so please let me know if you would like to help. If you want to help in ANY WAY, please e-mail one of us

ASAP, before summer takes us over! Co-Chairmen:

DHS Chess Club Hosts First Tournament

Saturday, May 14th was another historic day as the DHS Chess Club hosted its first annual tournament. DHS chess players were joined by students from Ryan High School, Immaculate Conception Catholic School, and the Home School program for a great afternoon of chess competition. The tournament was open to all area high school and middle school students. The tournament was held at the North Branch of the Denton Public Library. A big thank you to the library, and another big thank you to Michael Borys, President of Denton Chess Club, for his invaluable help. All individuals played four matches. Individual scores, from two to four players, were then combined to calculate team scores. A win is awarded 1 point, a draw .5 points, and a loss 0 points. Tournament results were:

Speed Chess games following the four regular tournament rounds were played to break the 2

nd

through 4th place ties

and determine the trophy awards. At the end of the day a fun Bughouse Tournament added to the excitement.

Bughouse is a partner game where pieces captured by one partner can be inserted onto the other partner‟s board. The Bughouse Tournament was open to anyone wanting to play. The Bughouse Tournament results were:

Kroger Plus Card Registration

It's time to register or re-register your Kroger Plus Card to benefit Denton High School PTSA!

One of the easiest fundraisers in which the Denton High PTSA participates is the Kroger Neighbor to Neighbor Program. Kroger donates one million dollars annually to charities, schools, and churches. This year we earned $957. For us to receive part of this fund next year, we need people who will enroll beginning June 1st. Then all you have to do is scan your Kroger Plus Card (or enter an alternate ID such as a phone number) every time you shop at a Kroger Store. Purchases accumulate from July 1st, 2011 through April 30th, 2012. If you do not have a Kroger Plus Card, you can get one from a cashier when you check out. You only have to scan your card and the Denton High bar code (shown below) together one time on or after June 1st for your purchases to count for Denton High School PTSA for the whole year.
