Our Leadership

Holly Johnson, GHACF President and Mark Kleist, Board of Trustees Chair

The Grand Haven Area Community Foundation continues to raise community dollars, invest those gifts wisely, and provide diverse funding opportunities that help make our community the best that it can be. The only reason we have been able to do our good work is because this community has generously supported us for more than 45 years, and we’re so grateful for that! The past 45 years have taught us many things, but most importantly we have learned that strong partnerships create better avenues to address complex social issues. We also know that it takes time and hard work for meaningful change to take root—complex issues are not solved quickly or easily. Here at the GHACF, we are committed to being lifelong learners in caring for our community. We are here to build strong partnerships, listen intently, make connections, offer guidance, provide various forms of funding and investments, and ensure that our Board and Team are prepared to make the necessary critical decisions to care for our community—forever.

We are happy to have welcomed new members to the GHACF Board and Team but we have also experienced great sadness this year. The sudden loss of Lynne Sherwood has been felt throughout the community. Lynne’s philanthropy ran wide and deep and while we will mourn her loss for some time, her generosity will live on in many diverse ways. As a way to share Lynne’s legacy gift with the community, the Community Foundation pledged $3 million dollars to the new Waterfront Stadium project. This project is exciting for our community and we are proud to partner with the City of Grand Haven in a project that will forever enhance our waterfront. Thank you for being a part of our journey. We are here for good, for ever, for all, for our community.Sincerely,

Mark Kleist Holly Johnson Board of Trustees Chair President

We are our community’s charitable foundation and we’re proud of our role as a community grantmaker. We’re here to improve and enhance the quality of life by promoting a healthy, inclusive, and diverse Tri-Cities and West Michigan community. In 2015, a total of $4,542,415 went back to your community from all funds, and $715,594 was awarded in grants from our Greatest Needs Funds, Field of Interest Funds, the Marion A. and Ruth K. Sherwood Family Fund, and the Youth Fund.

A Community Effort

As the keeper of our past, it was no surprise when the Tri-Cities Museum outgrew its current space and needed funds for a new archive annex. A grant from the Community Foundation, together with funds raised within the community, allowed for a new building called the Community Archive and Research Center. Now the history of our community will be preserved for generations.

As a grantmaking organization, we aim to cultivate funding relationships, respond to emerging community needs, and spark innovation in the field. We do this by developing proactive community engagement that leads to relationships and funding opportunities, and encourages organizations to be more collaborative. The Central Park Renovation project was initiated by the Village of Spring Lake to raise dollars for much needed renovations and space enhancement in Central Park. This park is a bright spot in the Village and is now set to serve our community members as a place for recreation and gathering. This project received a competitive grant from the Foundation as well as broad-based support from this community—thank you!

Economic & Community BettermentRobinson Township Park has long been a place for kids and adults to play ball, but the demand for the field had outgrown the space. A grant to Robinson Township made upgrades to the field possible, which is used for over 40 youth games and 50 adult games each summer. Now nothing is holding back a crowd-pleasing game except a questionable call at home plate.

EnvironmentWest Michigan Education Action Council (WMEAC) received a grant to develop the Zero Waste in Landfill program, which started in Spring Lake but will be implemented in other schools as well. The program not only reduced waste at Holmes Elementary, it taught the next generation about the importance of preserving our planet and making sustainable choices.

Ottawa County received a grant to help complete the second phase of Spoonville Trail. This non-motorized pathway will connect to the Grand Connection, a larger recreational plan that strives to connect the Tri-Cities with Grand Rapids and GVSU, will making it easier for residents to get exercise while appreciating the beauty of our region.

EducationJeffers Elementary School in Spring Lake wanted to develop a Kindergarten Summer Enrichment program to provide Kindergarten students with a summer educational experience that would help them transition to first grade in the fall. A grant from the Community Foundation allowed them to provide students with six weeks of summer education to ensure each student was ready to live, learn, and lead with excellence.

Health & Human ServicesA grant from the Community Foundation helped launch the pilot program Horses for Heroes, an Equine Assisted Psychotherapy program designed to assist U.S. veterans suffering from PTSD and other mental or emotional dysfunction. Created by Out Side In, it is the only program designed to specifically target veterans in Ottawa County who have been diagnosed with a mental health or emotional impairment.

The importance of good health cannot be overstated, and our teeth are a vital part of our bodies. When Love, INC opened a Free Dental Clinic, they soon realized they needed to hire a full-time hygenist, and a grant from GHACF allowed them to do just that. The clinic provides free services for 12 patients per day and helped over 370 people in its first nine months of operation.

Grand Haven Area Public Schools Mental Health FundWe all know that ensuring that our youth have the mental health services and support that they need is critical to their proper health and development. Thanks to the generosity of the local giving circle 100 (or more) Women Who Care, this Fund was created to support the social and emotional curriculum of Young 5’s through graduation.

New FundMichigan Health Endowment “Healthy Ottawa” Re-granting Initiative Fund The Michigan Health Endowment “Healthy Ottawa” Fund (MHEHOF) is a three year re-granting initiative made possible by a grant from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund and leveraged funds from both GHACF and the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland area. Together we have awarded grants to organizations whose programs focus on youth, seniors, and other high-need populations. These grants will help our community make meaningful progress on our highest priority health issues and have a county-wide impact towards solving some of our most complex public health issues.

Greatest Needs Funds provide us the flexibility to respond to our ever-changing community needs. This fund, in memory of Paul and his beloved wife Minnie, is a beautiful legacy to a local family. We are honored to be a part of the Luytjes' legacy and are excited to see the many positive impacts it will have on our community forever.

Thank you to the Whitings and Bolthouses for their generosity in supporting our community. We are grateful for this beautiful new Fund!

GRAND HAVEN AREA JAYCEES

Grand Haven Area Jaycees The local Jaycees were a longstanding community service organization in our community. When their club ceased to exist, they brought their remaining assets to the Community Foundation to start a Fund. This Fund will continue to support community initiatives in the Jaycees’ name so the legacy of the Jaycees, and all the good that they have done over the years, will live on through this new charitable fund. Thank you!

New FundWhistle Stop Park Fund The Village of Spring Lake is getting a new park! It was important to Spring Lake community members that this renovated playground be fun and safe, while offering equipment that would attract a wide range of children in our community. The unique train design is sure to be loved by kids of all ages.

There are still opportunities to support this project with a charitable gift through our website!

New FundCarol and Winfield Hall Fund for MusicCarol and Winfield Hall were friends of the Foundation who supported many great community causes. One of the Hall’s passions was music, and another was their church. When Carol passed away, a portion of her estate was left to support the music department at the First Presbyterian Church in Grand Haven. This Fund not only memorializes the Halls, but it will benefit their church’s music program forever.

As a way to give back to the community, Shirley and her late husband Vern wanted to create a Scholarship Fund that would forever assist a local student pursuing a career in music. Helping students receive an education is a beautiful way to give back – thank you to the Hipwell family!

New FundKenneth and Janis Formsma ESL ScholarshipThe Formsma family has generously changed their Donor Advised Fund to the Kenneth and Janis Formsma ESL Scholarship Fund. Ken was an elementary teacher at Mary A. White while Jan was dedicated to teaching all K-12 students who spoke English as a second language. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior at Grand Haven High School who speaks English as a second language. Thank you!

Frank and Virginia Such Memorial Scholarship Fund Last year we announced that we were honored that the Such children chose the Community Foundation to be a part of their Father’s legacy. When their Mother, Virginia, passed away this year, they added her name to the Scholarship Fund as well. This Fund will forever help students who are currently in college and are pursuing a degree in education. A beautiful legacy for a very special couple.

YAC participated in

Giving Tuesday,

sharing with social media why they give back:

›› To make an impact

›› To be the change

›› To give back to generations to come

›› Because the need is strong and I am able

›› Because this community has given me so much

›› Because I care

What is the Impact of YAC?}YAC

“The best part about YAC is learning about all of the different nonprofits in our area and their impact. One specific grant that stuck with me was the Ronald McDonald House that provides a home for local sick kids in need of treatment. I just felt like I was really making a difference.”

Kaden Kar

“I first heard about YAC at the 2015 Diversity Summit. During small group discussions, I spoke about how Grand Haven’s lack of diversity affected my peers and I, and the school’s latest attempts at addressing that absence. Through this, I learned about the Youth Advisory Council and learned that someone my age who wanted to address such issues myself should apply for the local YAC. I found the concept of students reviewing and funding solutions to problems faced by their fellow students very appealing, and I filled out the online application the next day. Looking back, I’m very glad I did so. My time with YAC has given me the most voice I’ve ever had in my community, and I look forward to working with the council in the year to come.”

Ysabela Golden

“My favorite grant that we funded was the Ronald McDonald House. Having been in a similar situation with a loved one, I understand that time is something we always want more of. My hope with this grant is to give families that chance to be close to their loved one without worrying about the cost.”

Sydney Fritz

“I joined YAC to give back to my community and hopefully spread awareness about people with dyslexia.”

The Tri-Cities College Access Network (TCAN) is now in its fifth year and continues to work to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to pursue education after high school.

$4 million in Tuition Incentive Progam scholarship funds were leveraged to support eligible graduating seniors through their first two years of college as they work to earn an Associate’s degree

Over 75% of studentsin the Tri-Cities graduated with a postsecondary educational plan (photos by Krystal Wagner)

63% of seniors in the Tri-Cities completed their Free Application for Federal Student Aid

Over 70 families attended the Early Childhood Expo to enroll their children in a preschool program

“ I had always wanted to go to college but I did not think it would be possible for me to go. My mom is a single parent and had recently lost her job. When I was told about the TIP program [from the TCAN College Advisor], everything changed for me. I finally felt as if my future was opening up and I was going to be able to explore some of the dreams I have for my future.

I am now excited about how the TIP program is going to allow me to continue my education and help me get a great career not just a job.”

College Advisor Jana Reenders, pictured with Jessica Ayers, divides her time between the four Tri-Cities public high schools: Spring Lake, Spring Lake Alternative, Grand Haven, and Central. In 2015, TCAN helped over 80 TIP-eligible high school students apply to college, many of whom are the first-generation to go to college.

TCAN was awarded a $10,000 grant from Greater Ottawa County United Way to support its college advisor position, a critical piece of the work done by TCAN.

Ninety-five years of ice, wind, and waves have damaged our beloved south pier. The Army Corp of Engineers plans to

renovate the structure, but their funding does not include repairing our iconic catwalk.

The Save the Catwalk Fund aims to restore the 59 bents (arches) and preserve our skyline for future generations.

Help restore this local treasure by giving generously to the Save the Catwalk Fund today.
