Dear Members,

We are almost through the heat of the summer and the coordination for the 65th Annual Arizona National Livestock Show is in high gear! The steer nomination deadline has just passed and exhibitors are beginning to request DNA kits and getting their entries prepared for the Show.

We are pleased to announce that Arizona National will coordinate a Dutch Oven Contest November 17th at Cabela’s in Glendale. This will give teams an opportunity to compete in another contest and gear up for the contest held at ANLS December 30th.

Another new program this year is the partnership between the College of Agriculture at the University of Arizona and Arizona State University Morrison School of Agribusiness for an internship program during the Show.

We welcome Gerald Lewis as a new co-superintendent for the Open Cattle Department. We greatly appreciate all the hard work and time Carl Whitney provided to the Show the past several years.

There are a lot of exciting events being planned for the Show this year along with some schedule changes. The dates of the Show are December 27-31, 2012 with the Show dedication being held December 27. The Junior Dance will continue but it has been moved to December 29th and the Junior Market Auction will be held Sunday, December 30th at 3:00 pm. We have included a schedule in the newsletter so you can make your plans to visit and see all of the exciting events taking place.

Don’t forget to join us November 6th for the Arizona National Membership Dinner. Watch your mailbox for more details in October.

Sincerely,

Ambassador on the RoadDear ANLS Supporters,

Arizona National Livestock Show is a few months away and my excitement for the show continues to mount. Let me take a few minutes to introduce myself and express how my excitement grows with each day.

I grew up in the beautiful small town of Cottonwood, Arizona. My grandpa farmed hay and raised livestock in the Verde Valley. He passed his love of agriculture to my mother as she raised and showed livestock growing up, and this passion was passed down to me. Growing up I could always be found making the best mud pie, playing with lambs or riding my horse April. I loved every second of my childhood! In addition to spending many hours outside, my involvement in the Cottonwood 4-H organization and the Arizona FFA Association have help shaped me into the person I am today. These amazing organizations and raising my own show animals taught me many life lessons such as responsibility, leadership, a strong work ethic, and an appreciation for agriculture. These life

lessons have helped me through the last three years of my college career in addition to filling out the veterinary school application. This time next year it is my hope that I will be leaving the great state of Arizona to veterinarian program.

I am truly grateful and excited to serve as the ANLS Ambassador. The show has been a tradition from me since I was ten years old; it was like Christmas all over again. Throughout my year of service I have the opportunity to travel around the state representing ANLS and the agriculture industry. I am thankful for the scholarships I have received from the show. As the show draws nearer it will become harder for me to contain my excitement for “second Christmas.” I look forward to traveling around to county fairs to share my love for ANLS. I hope to see you at the show! Sincerely,Cheyenne Robinson

Retired rancher, Robert G. “Bob” Boice, 84 died at his home in Globe on June 21, 2012. Bob, born Jan 24, 1928, was the second son of Frank Seymour Boice and Mary Grantham Boice. He was raised on the Boice family’s Empire Ranch near Sonoita; AZ. Bob showed his leadership abilities at Tucson High School as a class representative all four years. In college, he was house manager of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. Bob married his high school sweetheart and lifetime partner, Miriam Hamilton of Tucson shortly after they both graduated from the University of Arizona where Bob earned a degree in Animal Husbandry. They made their first home at the Empire Ranch.

In 1955 they moved to the Slash S Ranch, south of Globe, AZ which the Boice Family owned and operated until 1978. In 1958 they built their home in Globe, raising their family and becoming very active members of the community.

Bob was highly regarded for his volunteerism, dedication, and accomplishments. He was selected Globe “Man of the Year” in 1971 after starting the first 4-H steer club in Globe, “The Gila Mon-Steers

4-H Club”. He was the first Gila Co. Fair & Racing Commission Chairman and a driving force in developing the Gila County Fairgrounds. Bob continued to be active in 4-H the remainder of his life. The Gila Co. Fairgrounds Exhibition Hall was dedicated in his honor in 1995. As President of the Gila County Cattle Growers’ Association, Bob was instrumental in building Burch Sale Yard and conducting the first Association yearling sale which continues today. As a tribute, the 2012 auction was dedicated to Bob and Miriam. He was a member of the National Cattlemen’s Association, a member of the Arizona Cattle Growers’ Association, the Gila County Cattle Growers’ Association, Globe Chamber of Commerce, Gila County Fair Livestock Committee and a strong supporter of the Gila County Historical Museum.

Bob’s contributions to Arizona Ranching were acknowledged in 1998 when he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the U of A College of Agriculture. Working as a team, he and Miriam were awarded “2000 Cattleman of the Year” by the Globe-Miami Chamber of Commerce. They were once again recognized with an award of “Rancher of the Year” in 2009. He served as Chairman of Gila County’s Screw Worm and Brucellosis Eradication Programs. Both were a great success and made significant improvements to Arizona’s ranching industry.

Since 1960 Bob has supported the Arizona National Livestock Show. He served as Superintendent of the Junior Division for several years. The Arizona National Livestock Show was dedicated to Bob and Miriam in 2005, honoring their many years of service. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Arizona Livestock Production Credit Association, as Chairman of the Arizona Society of Range Management and as a member of the U of A Alumni Board of Directors. One of Bob’s proudest moments was when the Boice family received the 2011 Heritage Award from the U of A College of Agriculture recognizing three generations of Boice U of A Alumni.

In 1986 Bob was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid leukemia. Over the course of many years of treatment at the U of A Medical Center, he was declared cancer free and remained in remission for the rest of his life. He and Miriam then started many years of cruising, climaxing with a cruise to Alaska with all their children and grandchildren to celebrate their 50th Anniversary.

Bob was extremely proud of his children and felt they were the most important accomplishment of his life. All four graduated from college and have successful lives. In addition to his wife of 62 years, Bob is survived by his children, Mary and husband Bruce Moreton of Darnestown, MD; Grant and wife Kristi Boice of Scottsdale, AZ; Martha Madani of Oro Valley, AZ and Peggy and husband Charles Sands of Lexington, MO and San Manuel, AZ. He is also survived by his 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandsons.

A fourth generation rancher, he loved the outdoors and what it meant to be a rancher. Bob had a passion for gardening, growing award winning orchids and could grow just about anything from a cutting or seed.

Respected by all that knew him for his kindness, generosity, principles, honesty and integrity, Bob loved life and people. Many considered him their friend.

At Bob’s request no services were held. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Arizona National Livestock Show Scholarship Fund, 1826 W. McDowell Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85007 or Gila County 4-H Livestock, PO Box 1337, Globe, AZ 85502

The Arizona National Livestock Show has developed a new partnership this year to offer college students an internship program during the Show. There are often temporary positions available during the Show and this program will now allow the students an opportunity to also gain college credit.

The program allows college students in an agriculture related field to work with the Arizona National during the holiday break for real life, hands on experience in various positions. This also allows the interns an opportunity to become involved in the Show which provides eligibility to apply for scholarships and meet industry representatives and future contacts.

Applicants must be college students majoring in agriculture related degree program and interest in the livestock industry. They must be hard working and excel in time management and organizational skills along with having a professional demeanor.

Arizona National is very pleased with the partnership and look forward to working with the students during the Show.

New ANLS College Internship Program

The Arizona National Livestock Show will be holding a Dutch Oven Cook Off at Cabela’s World Foremost Outfitters, Glendale location on November 17th.

We are looking forward to holding this event with a retailer prior to the Show to kick off all the festivities. This will also allow us an opportunity to promote the Show and sharing this unique style of cooking which is part of preserving our western heritage. If you are interested in gathering a team and pulling out those Dutch oven pots to create a delicious main dish, bread and dessert then be sure to contact us for the contest packet.

The contest will be the same format as the 2nd Annual Dutch Oven Cook Off during the Livestock Show on December 30th.

We hope that you will stop by Cabela’s on November 17th to say hi and see what this event is all about. You may also luck out and be able to enjoy some tasting’s from the cook off. Cabela’s is located at 9380 W. Glendale Ave in Glendale. It is located right off the 101 freeway.
