it is with greAt pleAsure that i introduce the guild’s december newsletter. Once again, the pages are full of the activities that have taken place over the last few months.

By the time you’re reading this issue, i will have attended three of our nine branch dinners. this year, i have been impressed with a number of things: the growing attendance, the camaraderie and the networking. Of course, it would be remiss of me not to mention the great locations and food too. guild dinners have for many years been a pivotal part of our members’ networking activities and it’s good to see they still provide that opportunity. thank you to all who have sponsored and attended this year’s events so far. More are still to come.

At each of the dinners, i’ve talked about the guild’s desire to engage more with our young professionals (Yps); and our future Yps, by becoming involved with universities. Over the last few months, both the director general dr Cheryl Burgess and i have had a number of opportunities to start that process and the response so far has been extremely positive. we will keep you updated in future in the pipeline newsletters.enjoy reading this issue. if you have a story, news or information you feel should appear in the next issue, do make sure to let the hQ team know.

Finally, i wish all guild members a very happy Christmas and prosperous new Year.

Ocean Installer enters OzMove will meet client demand for its subsea construction services

AS PART oF oCeAN Installer’s continuing global growth strategy, the company has established office in Perth, Australia, to meet client demand for subsea construction services.

ocean Installer has recently hired Bijan K Mahapatra to lead the office in Australia. Mr Mahapatra has more than 30 years of experience in the offshore subsea engineering and construction industry.

Meanwhile, ocean Installer has been awarded a contract for an umbilical installation project with oceaneering for LLoG on the Delta House project in the Mississippi Canyon Area. nAtiOnAl grid has hooked up a new green energy facility that turns local crops into sustainable gas. Built by renewable energy company Future Biogas, the project at holkham in norfolk uses a process known as anaerobic digestion to turn locally-grown crops such as maize and grass into sustainable gas – enough to fuel up to 2,500 homes and businesses on average through national grid’s gas network.

Up to 80 projects pendingthis is the first such biogas facility to connect to the gas network in the county, and over the next eight years national

grid expects to connect up to 80 more. Biogas, made from crops, sewage and other ‘biomass’, can make a significant contribution to keeping energy supplies secure, affordable and green.

richard Court, head of stakeholder delivery at national

Capacity shortages hit London marketTender Cost Update UK

A surge in demand in recent months in the London area has led Mace Cost Consultancy to increase its forecast for tender cost inflation to 4.5% in the region for both 2014 and 2015. The upward revision is driven by a capacity shortage among contractors which is leading to significantly reduced competition and rising margins. The forecast for 2016 remains at 4.0% as industry capacity is expected to grow and moderate the upward pressure on prices.

Elsewhere in the country there is still enough capacity to meet demand, and competition is still keeping price increases to a minimum. Our forecast for average inflation in tender prices therefore remains unchaged at 2.0% for 2014, rising to 2.5% in 2015 and 3.0% in 2016, by which time the general economic recovery is expected to have increased demand for construction in the regions.

It is now a regular occurrence for contractors to turn down tender opportunities, particularly if they involve single stage tendering, incomplete design information or significant construction risks. We are also seeing overheads and profit allowances increasing to levels that have not been seen for the last five years as competition is reduced.

These presentations were judged by a panel of three: Mike Flynn, managing director of The Flynn Group and current Northern Branch chairman; Christine McCarthy from United Utilities; and Steve Kent from the event’s

organisers Pipe equipment Specialists. The presentations were judged on a number of aspects, including innovation, presentation skills, technical content and timing.

This year 17 companies took part, which is the highest number ever, and the winning presentation came from R2M Ltd, who presented their new MoLeCoR Class 500 MoPVC pipe. Capita were runners up. Next year’s event takes place on 14 october at the same location.

On 10 OCtOBer, the scottish Branch broke with its usual tradition of giving a scottish guild dinner and held instead a Vip technical lunch at the glasshouse in edinburgh. surrounded by glorious views of Calton hill and edinburgh city centre, the venue and talks proved to be a huge success.

special guest speaker ian Cartwright, head of construction, capital delivery, for national grid,

presented a topical talk about the new contracting operating model and how this would impact on both the organisation and its service providers.

Sound bite speechesthree other speakers each provided 10-minute ‘sound-bite’ presentations on new industry tech. dr Julia race looked at the future of carbon capture and storage. rob graham revealed

the benefits of using cloud-based software. And george tuckwell gave an entertaining talk on geophysics, using diY analogies to hammer home his points.

said guest Mark taylor, regional business development manager for Bredero shaw, ‘i thoroughly enjoyed the lunch. it was well organised, included interesting presentations, and provided good networking opportunities – all in under three hours.’

oN 23 oCToBeR, The Northern Ireland Branch hosted its technical event at The Mount, Belfast. Forty people attended the evening which featured a presentation titled ‘Back to the Past’ by Stephen Hemphill from Mutual energy (Stephen is also the former chairman of the Guild’s Northern Ireland Branch).

The paper looked at the Moyle Interconnector, a 500MW HVDC electrical link between the high voltage power grids of Scotland

and Northern Ireland. This is a key component of energy infrastructure between the geographical regions, supplying cheaper power and enhancing security of supply.

technical challengesThe Moyle Interconnector was commissioned in 2002 and enjoyed world-class levels of reliability. However, since 2010 it has suffered multiple cable faults, which have resulted

in technical and commercial challenges for the Mutual team.

Stephen shared some of the challenges the team successfully overcame. He also outlined the plans to restore this asset to the high-reliability levels enjoyed prior to 2010. This well-received talk was followed by a technical Q&A session afterwards.

A big, big project, in every respect

updAtes On the progress of the thames tideway tunnel made for a well-attended eastern Branch technical event on 3 december at the national Centre for deafblindness, peterborough. in this joint event with the institute of Civil engineers, simon Morris from Ch2M hill gave guests the background and logistical requirements of the major project.

the thames tideway tunnel is a major new sewer, urgently needed to protect the tidal river thames from increasing pollution caused by combined sewer overflows discharging sewage into the river. At 25km in length, up to 7.2m in diameter and 65m underground at its deepest point, the tunnel is the largest project of its type in europe.

Seven year projectstarting in west london, the proposed route for the main tunnel generally follows the path of the river thames to limehouse and ultimately Beckton sewage treatment works. the project will take approximately seven years to construct and requires a total of 24 sites across 14 london boroughs to construct and operate it. Once operational, the thames tideway tunnel (in conjunction with the lee tunnel which is currently under construction) will reduce discharge volumes by around 94% in a typical year.
