Arsenic Content in Indian Basmati Rice! Is There Need to Look into our Basmati? The US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) has found arsenic content in about 30 samples of Indian basmati rice in its preliminary analysis. The FDA is in the process of collecting and analyzing a total of approximately 1,200 samples to examine the issue thoroughly. However, exporters from India said that basmati rice was free from arsenic content as shipments are made only after complying with required tests. The report created unrest in Pakistani rice growers and exporters because most of our basmati rice is exported to the Dubai and then redirected to different European and American countries under different brand names. At the same time, Pakistan Council for Research in Water Resources reported that a large percentage of analyzed water samples, collected from rice areas, had excess Arsenic than permissible limits. Most of the samples had more than 50 ppb which is 5 times more than the WHO set guideline. For example, in 64% of water samples in Gujranwala; 75% in Sheikhupura; 100% Lahore were found contaminated with arsenic. Another research work conducted by Geosciences Laboratory, Geological Survey of Pakistan, Islamabad showed the levels of As in the shallow groundwater were much higher (from 1 to 2400 μg/L) than the WHO standards. Further, rice is particularly efficient in taking up arsenic, partly because it's grown in water-flooded conditions, which reduces the binding of arsenic by soil, thus making the substance more available to the grain. Arsenic is a chemical matter present in the environment from both natural and human sources. It is found in water, air, food and soil in organic and inorganic form. It contaminates groundwater as a result of natural geochemical processes and is highly toxic and carcinogenic. It is unknown if arsenic in rice poses the same risk as arsenic in water, because our bodies may absorb and process it differently. Plus, the health risk also depends on the concentrations of the different forms of arsenic those are present in the system. It is mostly found in oxidation states of -3, 0, 3 and 5 valent arsenite. The trivalent arsenic (As III) is considered 60 times more toxic than the pentavalent arsenic (As V).considered 60 times more toxic than the pentavalent arsenic (As V).
