“WestCare Family,
In a matter of weeks, we will be proudly presenting the 5th Annual Fresno
AIDS Walk on Saturday, October 22nd at Woodward Park in Fresno. This an-
nual event is a fundraiser for our program, The Living Room, which is Fresno’s
only social support center for those infected, affected or at risk of contracting
HIV/AIDS. This event is crucial to helping them sustain as a program, but is also
a tremendous event for spreading awareness of this disease and paying tribute
to those that we’ve lost, those that persevere and those that lead the charge for a cure. Aside from
our Spring and Fall treatment graduations, the Fresno AIDS Walk is the longest running community
event that we host as an organization. That is not to say that support is not needed. As years go by
and a true cure is not found, the need for support only becomes greater. With this said, I would
like to reach out to our entire WestCare
California family to be there for one of
our own. You can learn about the various
ways that you can support by visiting
www.fresnoaidswalk.org A great way to
do this would be to start a walking or
running team with your fellow staff. I am
happy to announce that our San Joaquin
Valley Veterans Hanford, RMSC and
Housing Services programs have pledged
to start walking teams! The event is free
to participate in with your $5 admission
to the park and will feature a 5K run and a
2K walk, both along the beautiful Lewis
Eaton Trail! Funds raised on this day will
help them cover the cost of utilities, meals
for their clients and ultimately improve
the experience of those that receive ser-
vices and refer to The Living Room as ’A
Place to Belong.’ Regardless of age, gen-
der, race, upbringing or sexual orientation,
this terrible disease affects all of us and
those that we serve in some way. I hope
to see all of you on Saturday, October
22nd at Woodward Park in Fresno.”
Sincerely,
Shawn A. Jenkins, Senior Vice President, WestCare California

September 2016: WestCare California Celebrates National Recovery Month!
In honor of National Recovery Month, WestCare staff and those that we proudly serve shared what recovery means to
them! Whether we’ve been through it personally or have a loved one who has, addiction affects us all. But, through in-
creased awareness, we can tell the world that treatment works and recovery happens!

Tri-Annual Board Report Video (May - Aug)
In September, our Senior Vice President, Shawn Jenkins,
rallied the WestCare California Family together to create
our most ambitious tri-annual board report video to date
to be shown at WestCare Foundation to highlight the
“Wow points” from our previous reporting period. Thank
you to everyone that helped make this project as special
as it was! Please follow this link to view it: https://

9/20 - 2016 Central California Women’s
Conference:
We were proud to have
staff from our various pro-
grams in attendance at the
2016 Central California
Women’s Conference as
well as the opportunity to
represent our organization
with an vendor booth cov-
ering all of our services.
9/13 – A Client’s Mission of Giving Back
Goes International:
On a recent furniture delivery to a newly housed family
with WINGS Fresno, a film crew from Denmark was on
hand to capture this as part of a snapshot of the various
services that are being offered to the homeless population
in Fresno, California. One of our residents and a frequent
volunteer in the community, Danny, was featured promi-
nently in their segment, which will share his great deeds
to an international audience! We are honored to be a
community partner with WINGS and look forward to
helping them serve the homeless in our community while
also allowing those that we serve to give back!
9/17 – WestCare Clients Help Make the
Walk to End Alzheimer’s a Success:
Our amazing clients
from our residen-
tial treatment facili-
ty played a tremen-
dous part in the
setup for this year’s
Walk to End Alz-
heimer’s event pre-
sented by the Alz-
heimer’s Association. They helped with the setup the day
before, early the morning of and assisted with various du-
ties on the day of the event before helping break down
after the event. The coordinators said the volunteers
were "The work horses that were needed". That’s not to
say that they didn’t have a great time while helping a great
cause. They could be seen dancing with the event’s partic-
ipants as well as joining in on the walk. The coordinators
were extremely grateful for the efforts of those that we
serve and visited our information booth at the Central
California Women’s Conference and Fresno County
Combined Federal Giving Campaign Kick-Off events later
that week just to share their appreciation with our mar-
keting staff! Amazing work, everyone!

and coming together with
their fellow brothers and

9/19 – A Special Treat for Our Ladies in Res-
idential:
“We were able to take some of the RMSC’s female clients
to a Fresno Pacific Volleyball match. For many of the cli-
ents who were able to attend, this was their first college
sports match that they have ever been to. The clients had
a great time as well as my fellow counselor, Tracy and I!”
- Jessie Alcorn, RMSC Job Coach, MLK Residential
9/23 – WestCare Clients Gain New Skills
Through an Exciting New Class:
We are proud to see several of our clients successfully
graduate from a two week employment readiness class
presented by Catholic Charities, Diocese of Fresno and
Fresno City College! This pilot program aims to teach
prospective job searchers new skills from resume building
to job searching and more. Upon their completion of the
program, they were invited along with their loved ones to
a graduation ceremony held at Catholic Charities in honor
of their accomplishments! We would like to thank Catho-
lic Charities and Fresno City College for allowing those
that we serve to take part in and grow from this amazing
new program!

Veterans Stand Down:
Our San Joaquin Valley
Veterans staff from Fres-
no and Hanford were
once again a part of an-
other great Central Valley
Veterans Stand Down
event. This year’s event
featured a wonderful cer-
emony in honor of those
who have served for our
freedom including a powerful speech by Assemblyman
Jim Patterson in which he
promised to our Veterans,
"We will be your voice,
we will be there for you. It
is the least that we can do
for all that you have done
for us."

for her on her road to becoming a

“I would never be able to decide between a cat or a dog
because we have both in our life. I love all animals and
have been known as ‘The Animal Whisperer.’ We love
both of our girls, Fatso (Cat) and Daisy (Dog).”

“1000% agree! They are our kids and we love them both
equally!” – Cleadus Shelton, Director of Contract

“I'm defi-
nitely a cat
person! I
have 5 of
them. Their
names are
Dyna, Jam-
mies, Elsa,
Ana and
Kitty Kitty -
my son CJ named all of them with exception to Dyna,
who is just about as old as him. I am going to look into
an Autism Dog in the future but he's going to have to
like cats!” - Gabriela McNiel, Director of Marketing,
Administration
“I’ve always been a dog guy.
My wife and I love our four
legged son, Monty (Short for

little family complete!”
