Hornell, defending holder of the Governor's Cup. reached the final hy ousting the Hamilton Cardinals in five games. lantestown swept past the Olean Yankees In four straight. The Falcons give early indications of a one-sided triumph when they broke out with a five-run rally in the second. The winners' catcher, Ron (Gabby) Wiucki, was beaned by righthander Stan Deneka in the midst of the uprising, and removed to Jamestown General Hospital. Witucki suffered a half-inch gash over his left eye when Deneka hit him with a fast ball on a two-and-one pitch. Hospital authorities reported Wi- tucki was resting comfortably. An X-ray report on the Jamestown catcher wi]l be made public tomor- row, but the Jagacstown club physi- cian said after the game that Witucki likely wilt be able to return to action before the series ends. Davie, a Detroit product who came to the Falcons as a third baseman but was converted to a pitcher by Manager Tony fcupien, never was in serious trouble tonight. He mixed his fast ball with a good assortment of curves as he fanned ten and gave up three bases on balls. The tall, muscular righthander, who won 17 and lost three during the regular season, also laid down a perfect squeeze bunt in the fifth to account for the Falcons' sixth run. Walks to Luplen and Ken Walters and George Risley's single loaded the bases for the Falcons in the second. Charley Lau scored Lupien and Risley with a Texas Leaguer over second and Walters, who went to third on the play, scored on t wild pitch. When Witucki was hit, Claude Mit- schele ran for him. After Davie fan- ned and Bob Szabo skied out to right, Dick Liesiecki poked a single to right, scoring Lau and Mistchele. The Falcons added two in the fifth when Davie's (perfect squeeze bunt cashed Mitschell and Szabo's double sent Lau across. The winners closed out the scor- ing In the sixth when, with two out, Risley walked and came home on Walters' two-bagger to right. Righthander Bob Neebling, who won 15 and log! seven in the regular season, probably will start for James- town tomorrow night. Manager Alex Alexson of the Dodgers is expected to counter with either Joe Oliffe or Art Grennon, both lefthanders. Pony Pickup Manager Jack Slumping Fain Still Holds AL Batting Lead New York, Sept. 8 (/P) Ferris Fain, defending American League bat- ting champion, is showing signs of faltering in his bid to retain the title, but his closest pursuers also are slumping in the stretch. Fain, Philadelphia first sacker, dropped six points to .332 last week as he garnered eight hits in 32 at bats. But New York's Gene Wood- ling, in second place, dropped two points to .325 and Dale Mitchell, Cleveland's veteran outfielder, tum- bled seven points to third place at .324. In the National League, Stan Musial held a 15-poinl advantage over Cincinnati's Ted Kluszewski, through Sunday's games. The Cardinals' slug- ger moved up two points to .335 with a lO-for-26 effort while Kluszewski showed a four-point improvement to 320. A pair of Boston Red Sockers. Billy Goodman and George Kell. were tied for the fourth place in the American League batting d e r b y . Goodman banged out 15 safeties in 28 tries, a .536 pace, to climb eight points to .311. Kell, out of the lineup with a dislocated finger, remained in the same position. Mickey Mantle, New York Yan- kee outfielder, jumped up one notch to sixth although he tailed off one point to .305. Third place in the National League was occupied by Frankie Baumholtz of the Chicago Cubs. The speedy flychaser picked up one point to .312 with eight bingles in 24 trips to the plate. Jackie Robinson, Brooklyn's second baseman, moved from fifth to fourth place with a five-point risd to .310. He had 11 hits in 28 tries. The St. Louis Cardinals' Red Schoendienst tacked two points on- to his average and his .307 mark put him in fifth place. Larry Doby of the Cleveland In- dians leads the American League in home runs with 30 and was tied with Philadelphia's Gus Zernial for runs batted in honors at 95. Hank Sauer, Chicago Cub out- fielder, maintained his National League advantage in the power de- partment with 35 homers and 116 runs driven in. Two unbeaten hurlers, Sandy Con- suegra of Washington in the Ameri- can League and Al Corwin of the New York Giants in the National, topped the pitchers in percentage. reached three nine hits.

Second game of the series will be played here tomorrow night. The teams move to raornell for the third and fourth games on Wednesday and Thursday. If a §fth game is necessary it will be pltyed in Hornell Friday. In the eve i i the sixth and seventh games are required, they will be played here Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

Hornell, defending holder of the Governor's Cup. reached the final hy ousting the Hamilton Cardinals in five games. lantestown swept past the Olean Yankees In four straight. The Falcons g ive early indications

of a one-sided triumph when they broke out with a five-run rally in the second.

Hospital authorities reported Witucki was resting comfortably. An X-ray report on the Jamestown catcher wi]l be made public tomorrow, but the Jagacstown club physician said after the game that Witucki likely wilt be able to return to action before the series ends.

When Witucki was hit, Claude Mit-schele ran for him. After Davie fanned and Bob Szabo skied out to right, Dick Liesiecki poked a single to right, scoring Lau and Mistchele.

The Falcons added two in the fifth when Davie's (perfect squeeze bunt cashed Mitschell and Szabo's double sent Lau across.

The winners closed out the scoring In the sixth when, with two out, Risley walked and came home on Walters' two-bagger to right.

Righthander Bob Neebling, who won 15 and log! seven in the regular season, probably will start for Jamestown tomorrow night.

Manager Alex Alexson of the Dodgers is expected to counter with either Joe Oliffe or Art Grennon, both lefthanders.

Slumping Fain Still Holds AL Batting Lead

New York, Sept. 8 (/P) — Ferris Fain, defending American League batting champion, is showing signs of faltering in his bid to retain the title, but his closest pursuers also are slumping in the stretch.

Fain, Philadelphia f i r s t sacker, dropped six points to .332 last week as he garnered eight hits in 32 at bats. But New York's Gene Wood-ling, in second place, dropped two points to .325 and Dale Mitchell, Cleveland's veteran outfielder, tumbled seven points to third place at .324.

In the N a t i o n a l League, Stan Musial held a 15-poinl advantage over Cincinnati's Ted Kluszewski, through Sunday's games. The Cardinals' slugger moved up two points to .335 with a lO-for-26 effort while Kluszewski showed a four-point improvement to 320.

Mickey Mantle, New York Yankee outfielder, jumped up one notch to sixth although he tailed off one point to .305.

The St. Louis Cardinals' Red Schoendienst tacked two points onto his average and his .307 mark put him in fifth place.

Larry Doby of the Cleveland Indians leads the American League in home runs with 30 and was tied with Philadelphia's Gus Zernial for runs batted in honors at 95.

Hank Sauer, Chicago Cub outfielder, maintained his National League advantage in the power department with 35 homers and 116 runs driven in.

Two unbeaten hurlers, Sandy Con-suegra of Washington in the American League and Al Corwin of the New York Giants in the National, topped the pitchers in percentage. Consuegra showed a 6-0 record while Corwin's was 5-0.
