Imagine that person did what the Bible says, “Love keeps no record of wrongs.” We have to imagine, because our experience is that human love is conditional. We assume that he loves us if we show our love to him. The truth is that God loves us not because of who we are or what we do. IN THE CENTER RING February, 2018

Forgiveness through Jesus

God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. - 2 Corinthians 5:19

February holds the day that often makes or breaks relationships: Valentine’s Day! It’s a day of engagement rings, flowers, dinners, and the hope for returned affections. For all the happiness of Valentine’s Day, it’s also bittersweet. For every happy or newly engaged or blissfully married couple, you can find someone who is sadly alone, someone who longs to be loved, someone going through a devastating break-up. No wonder the game is, “He loves me…He loves me not.”

Imagine if the pressure of Valentine’s Day was off. Imagine there was no doubt about how that special someone felt about you. Imagine that person did what the Bible says, “Love keeps no record of wrongs.”

We have to imagine, because our experience is that human love is conditional. It is usually based on how people look, or what they have, or how they treat us. As a result, we are led to think that God is the same. We think that he loves us if we’re lovable. We assume that he loves us if we show our love to him. The truth is that God loves us not because of who we are or what we do. The Bible clearly describes God’s amazing love by what he has done for us: “God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them.”

Honestly, we have to admit that there are all kinds of sins on our record before God. Our attempts at love throughout life—failures, breakups, lies, adulteries, divorces—all are an astonishing record of wrong. God ought to oppose us. But in amazing love, God doesn’t count our sins against us. That means that he doesn’t keep a record of all our actions, thoughts and words that violate his holy will.

God doesn’t keep a record of our sins because of Jesus. God took all our sins, the sins of everyone, and charged them to his Son. In our place Jesus willingly and lovingly suffered the punishment of death that we and all people deserved. This is the great love that God has for us…for you! Through Jesus Christ, our relationship with God is restored and by faith in Jesus we will enjoy the blessing of his love forever.

This year Ash Wednesday, the day that begins our Lenten journey with Jesus to the cross where he shows us the full extent of his love just happens to fall on February 14th, Valentine’s. Though these two events only happen to fall on the same day by matter of chance, God’s love for each of us is eternal and planned.

In our relationship with God, it’s not “He loves me…He loves me not.” In Christ, it is always, “He loves me…He loves me…He loves me.” Pastor Nick Maglietto

Principal’s Call Returned

Dear Brothers and Sisters at St. John’s,

The call I have received has been a truly heart-wrenching experience. I don’t know if I’ve ever felt so loved and appreciated throughout this process. So many of you have offered kind words, advice, and prayers for me and my family. The Lord has been very good to us here in Baraboo and blessed us even in ways we didn’t know we needed. Much work is left to be done here in Baraboo and also in Marshall, MN. The Lord will find work for me to do no matter where I am. I am truly confident of this.

With this said, I have decided to return my call to Samuel Lutheran School in Marshall. I have been assured, time and time again, by the members and leadership of St. John’s, of my need to stay here and continue work that has been started during my time here. I urge all of you, not to rejoice just in me and my family staying in Baraboo, but more so in the Lord’s goodness. He has given us all abundant gifts, talents, and blessings beyond greatest measure. It is time for all of us to join in the work of the church and be involved in spreading the warmth of God’s love to a world that often times seems so cold.

I also encourage each of you to consider how the work of our church can be supported and built up. St. John’s has truly had difficult times and will continue to because of sin in our world. Our membership needs to come together, to support one another and the ministry, and to truly unify where the devil looks to separate. I share with you selected verses of Romans 8: “If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? … No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who

loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

To God alone be all glory, honor, and praise. With warmest sincerity,

Craig Breitkreutz, Principal

those involved with Trunk or Treat and the float for the Light Parade.

g) Property – Bill Giese. Nothing to report. h) School Board – Martin Strobel. Tuition cost for

2018-2019 will raise $160/child. School Board is working to get teacher salaries in line with synod code. This includes salary and benefits. Currently salaries are close but was noted that we are at the minimum salary. Benefits we need to improve. Couple reasons for working on this: due to the fact that MLC requires all graduates to be paid at synod code. Also we have an aging teaching staff and if we need to place a call it would require to pay them at synod code. Our teachers love doing their job but as a congregation we need to support our called workers.

i) Spiritual Growth – Bruce Wilkinson. A letter was sent to members who were not recorded as being in church (excluding shut-ins) for one or more years. (friendship registers are used to keep track of members) Please understand the letters intent is not to say we are kicking out those who do not attend service, but rather an encouragement to return.

j) Stewardship/Finance – Brent Bailey. Nothing to report.

k) Worship – Tom Tiedt. Nothing to report l) Youth – Michael Tennier. Refreshing the Little

Lambs board to include family photos. 2018 Cradle Roll program will be instituted, the program involves sending age appropriate material to the family after baptism to help in bringing their child up in God. Still working on establishing the youth program again.

From the Church Library

If you do not have someone to hand your used devotion booklet to, St John’s library team is inviting you to leave it in the “Returns” basket. These could be used by members who would like to sample the readings. “Meditations” and similar booklets would be welcome. As you know, C. S. Lewis is a well-known Christian author with many works to his credit, including the Narnia series. Your library now has available for checkout his work, The Screwtape Letters, on CD. This fiction work is built on communications between Screwtape, an assistant to “Our Father Below”, and his nephew, a novice demon. Lewis offers food for Christian thought, serious warning and sometimes-dark comedy. Could be used for a longer car trip or listening on winter evenings. Do you have a big hunting trip on your bucket list? Author Steve Chapman asks you to join his hunt, a life-long dream to pursue the huge brown bear of Alaska. The complete title is My Dream Hunt in Alaska—With God on the Adventure of a Lifetime. Chapman also includes thoughts about offering to teach a young person who has not had the chance to hunt. Find this on the non-fiction shelf. We will not hold a book sale this Lent season; please keep your used but good materials for next year. Thank you for continuing support of our greeting cards.

Childcare

Childcare, after expenses, earned $15,402.64 in 2017, an average of $1,283.55 per month.

Chairman

Welcomed 2 new board members: Aaron Dix, our property representative, and Jeremy

Lindloff, our new secretary. Bob Hovey, current member, is our new treasurer/budget committee

representative.

Contacted Pastor Karow concerning tuition increase and whether any of their families would consider

withdrawing from St. John's because of the tuition increase. He said there may be concern for a few.

The board does not want to lose any families over tuition, so we are encouraging any families concerned about

next year's tuition, to get in touch with Principal Breitkreutz or school board members.

Discussion

Board did school walk-through, discussing the current childcare location and possible alternatives.

Mrs. Durkee addressed the board with questions about our truancy policy. After discussion, the

conclusion was to revisit the truancy policy, clalrify it, and faithfully apply it.

Action

Board will hold a special meeting on Monday January 22 to further work on Mission, Vision, and Objectives.

Martin Strobel, board elder
