• Stage one – Tension builds
• Abuser becomes edgy and tense
• Easily irritated
• Partner may feel scared or nervous and try to keep abuser happy

• Stage 2 – Explosion
• Abuser becomes more aggressive and verbally or physically attacks their partner
• Partner may feel like he or she deserved the abuse and most likely will try to cover up

relationship together• Promises it won’t happen again• Give gifts• Apologetic, passionate, romantic• Partner believes that they can change
abuser or be “good enough” so it won’t happen again
