My Dear Friends: Today we celebrate Pentecost, which is often
referred to as the “birth of the Church”. Pentecost is the second most important feast on the liturgical calendar. The first is Easter and Christmas comes in a lowly 3rd or 4th. Why is Pentecost so important? Well, this is the moment when the Holy Spirit came down upon the Apostles and gave them the grace they needed to leave their place of hiding and face the world with the Good News. Tradition tells us that eleven of the twelve died a martyr’s death, but they did their job. The Gospel had been spread and continues to spread throughout the world even today.
Perhaps we need to pray for the re-evangelization of our own country. I wonder sometimes if our easy life has contributed to so many people leaving the Roman Catholic faith. Let’s pray that the Holy Spirit may reinvigorate our faith and help return the lost sheep to the fold.
Have a blessed week.
-Fr. Jim

Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit
WISDOM. Through wisdom, we come to value properly those things which we believe through faith.
UNDERSTANDING. Through understanding, we gain a certitude about our beliefs that moves beyond faith.
COUNSEL. Through this gift of the Holy Spirit, we are able to judge how best to act almost by intuition.
FORTITUDE. With this gift we are given strength to follow through on the actions suggested by the gift of counsel.
KNOWLEDGE. Through this gift of the Holy Spirit, we can determine God’s purpose for our lives and live them accordingly.
PIETY. This gift gives us the desire to worship God and to serve Him out of love.
FEAR OF THE LORD. This gift of the Holy Spirit gives us the desire not to offend God, as well as the certainty that God will supply us the grace that we need in order to keep from offending Him.
