In order to apply archipelagic baselines in accordance with the LOSC, therefore, five

conditions have to be met:

Straight archipelagic baselines joining the outermost points of the outermost islands and

drying reefs of the archipelago may be drawn so long as the claimant States !main

islands" are included within the archipelagic baseline system

#he ratio of water to land within the baselines must be between $:$ and %:$

#he length of any single baseline segment must not e&ceed $'( nautical miles

)o more than three percent of the total number of baseline segments enclosing an

archipelago may e&ceed $** nautical miles

Such baselines !shall not depart to any appreciable e&tent from the general configuration

of the archipelago"
