Issue 4 Autumn Term - 29th Sep 2017 The Raleigh cross country squad got off to a flying start at the first race of the season last Friday. Over 60 children competed and every runner gave a determined performance! Despite strong competition from the other ELP schools, The Raleigh secured first place in both the junior girls and senior boys races. We also achieved second place in the junior boys race and third in the senior girls. There were many notable runs and personal bests but special mention goes to the following children who were placed in the first ten in their races: Junior girls: Mirella Norton (3rd), Annie Williams (4th) and Ami Jones (9th). Senior girls: Alice Moodie (2nd) Junior boys: Josh Cass (1st) Senior boys: Jacob Jacques (1st), Archie Helm (4th), George Truman (7th) and Luke Williams (8th). Well done to one and all and massive thanks to Mrs Rees and her large staff and parent team. On Monday, Mr Arif, the Imam at Woking Mosque led a whole school assembly on the theme of peace and tolerance. The children listened beautifully and with great respect. Following his demonstration of a sung prayer they all gave him spontaneous applause. A great success, celebrating diversity. Thanks to Mr Sainudeen for this introduction. I spoke to the children this week on the theme of perseverance. It has come to my attention that several children have dropped one club in favour of another! If the children choose a club they will be expected to attend for the term and will not be allowed to swap from now on. If your child gives up a club completely, there will be no refund. Your child may choose to attend more than one club of course. Thanks to The Friends of The Raleigh for meeting at school on Wednesday evening. There are lots of exciting plans for the year but we need you! Why not consider shadowing another team to get into the swing of helping with an event? If you are interested just email via [email protected] and we can pass on your details to the relevant teams. The Summer Fair team definitely could do with 2 or 3 friends together to shadow Mrs Irvine and Mrs Lowe, for example. Today found Year 2 having a Wow day here finishing with a London manikin challenge. Thanks for organising this staff. We are pleased to launch a new interactive times tables resource, paid for by our fantastic ‘Friends of The Raleigh’ (that is you!) TT Rock Stars has now launched in Year 6 and the children have been enjoying improving their times tables recall speed with a fun rock music theme! Login details have now been issued for children in all classes from Years 2 to 6. The resource can be accessed at https://ttrockstars.com/login by visiting the 'Studio' on the website, children can challenge themselves to improve their recall speed. Attendance

Last week we had one absence due to a medical/dental appointment, one unauthorised absence and 3 children arriving late.

In total, 16 pupils have been late this year to date.

Polite reminder that registration is at 08:50 prompt.

378 pupils have 100% attendance this term.

Harvest Festival Friday, 20th October at 9am is KS1 Harvest Festival Assembly

All children, not just KS1, may bring into class next week, and the week after, donations of non-perishable

items. The donations will be delivered to the Salvation Army who will use the contributions at their drop-in centre in Guildford Town Centre to feed the homeless and to provide food parcels for families in

crisis.

Last year, the Salvation Army were very grateful for our donations for these needy people. They were particularly grateful for staple items such as pasta, rice and soup, as well as ‘treats’

such as biscuits and chocolate.

We have been notified by Surrey County Council about forthcoming roadworks in East Lane which will commence on Monday 9th October.

The information leaflet provided by Surrey can be found on the next page.

PLEASE NOTE THAT EAST LANE WILL NOT BE COMPLETELY CLOSED. DUE TO THE LENGTH AND BUSY NATURE OF THIS ROAD, THERE WILL BE SMALL ROLLING CLOSURES INSTEAD OF CLOSING THE WHOLE

ROAD FOR THE DURATION OF THE WORKS AND THIS WILL ALLOW AS MUCH ACCESS AS POSSIBLE.

THERE WILL INEVITABLY BE DELAYS SO PLEASE ENSURE YOU LEAVE

EXTRA TIME FOR YOUR JOURNEY TO SCHOOOL.

On Monday the whole school descended on the playground

clutching their copper money bags. The houses worked

collaboratively and enjoyed lining up their coins to earn

points for their house. We were astounded by the number

of coins brought into school and although the House Captain

and School Council team did an amazing job sorting

and counting some, we were so grateful to Mrs Hollick

one of the Treasurers from the Friends of The Raleigh

who volunteered to count the rest!

Longest line house points went to;

1st Ark Royal, 2nd Falcon, 3rd Tyger, 4th Roebuck

The total amount raised will be donated to the Brain Tumour

Charity. Thanks once again for all your support, it will make

a huge difference to the sufferers and their families.

Well done, a great community challenge and look

out in next week’s newsletter for the total amount

raised as we are still counting!

On Thursday 5th October, we will be having our annual House Cross Country event. All children are encouraged to have-a-go and it is a great opportunity to win some valued house points. The children will need to

come into school wearing their house colour t-shirt and bring their school uniform to change into after the event.

Hever Triathlon

Last weekend, six Raleigh pupils (and some parents)

competed in the Hever Triathlon, a first open

water swim for some, and though a beautiful day,

water icy cold! All children were proud

to finish.

Parking

A further parking reminder. Please do not block the drives of local residents. This picture was sent in from last Friday afternoons pick-up and clearly shows the resident unable to get out of her drive due to

the vehicle partially blocking it. In addition there were cars parked on the opposite side of the road.

Please remember to be polite and courteous to our neighbours!
