Efforts
... Often with a specific focus
• Mission driven (technology has to meet mission needs), e.g.:• ESA roadmap missions • EC Galileo and Copernicus programs
• Limited scope • e.g. ARTES only focus on telecommunication
• Stand-alone, one-off missions / limited calls: • e.g. FP7, H2020 calls on a specific theme
• Limited by national funds: • e.g. GSTP 6.3 and Prodex (optional ESA programs)

INVEST: Improve access to space
Creating a European-wide generic long term programme for enabling a more rapid maturization of European Space Technology
European wide: Covering Europe irrespective of national inequalities
Generic: Not pre-constraint by themes or (stand-alone) missions
Long Term: Independent of national and EU policy cycles
INVEST is not competing, but rather complementing existing programs

Re-entry platform Concept• Reference: QARMAN IOD (VKI)
• Main Objective: Demonstrate the feasibility of a CubeSat as a Re-entry Platform
• IOD of:
• Thermal and Structural Design Validation (ceramic TPS)
• Scientific Investigation of re-entry phenomena (ablation, pressure/temperature profiles, spectrometry)
• Communication after blackout (data transmission through IRIDIUM)
• The Validation of those aspects can be then transformed in a IOD platform for re-entry payloads

Small Satellite Cluster launches and multi-satellite IOD
Small Satellite Cluster Launches
• -cheap re-occuring small satellite launches (Dnepr, Vega, etc) enable IOD missions
Multi-Satellite IOD
• -small constellations are an emerging technology
• -multi-satellite IOD provide test-bed for needed technology:
• Inter-satellite link
• formation flying
• satellite fractionation
• multi-point measurements, multi-sensor (fractionated sensor) measurement
• system redundant missions

Sounding rocket launches
• A modular sounding rocket system, gradually more capable:A. Simple deployer of free-flyer(s) with minimum instrumentation/services.
B. De-spun/rate-control payload + video, telemetry, command, recovery.
C. B + pointing and/or low-thrust propulsion.
The REXUS student rocket system is “a simple B”. A model for “INVEST”?
• Piggyback, “hosted”, payload systems for hitchhiking on other rockets:• For deploying free-flyers (e.g. for re-entry tests)
• An “INVEST” experiment module compatible with all μ–g rockets.
• A minimum, low-cost rocket system such as the T-Minus Dart.
