Dear Friend of St. Joseph’s:

As St. Joseph’s Health celebrates 147 years of providing quality health care to the residents of Central New York, we would like to remember and thank you for

believing in its mission and supporting the hospital’s programs through your thoughtful gifts.

With your support, the 2014 and 2015 giving periods were a success. Each year, more than 560 new individual and corporate donors joined the ranks of those who stepped

forward to make gifts to the many award-winning programs and services of the St. Joseph’s Health system, including initiatives such as the Circle of Caring, St. Francis Society

and Grateful Patient programs.

Though 2014 fundraising was quite successful, we are pleased to share that 2015 gifts and pledges received by St. Joseph’s Health Foundation reached nearly $2 million. In

the two years combined, $800,000 in grants was received.

Your generosity has helped to provide exceptional care and to enhance the well-being of our patients and their families. For example, in 2015, a $1 million gift was made by a

grateful patient in honor of Dr. Ronald Caputo and his team, which will be used to enrich cardiac services. Equally exciting, RBC Foundation – USA awarded a grant in support

of the Pediatric Comfort Room at St. Joseph’s Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program, a gift that has been truly transformational in providing efficient and supportive

care to children suffering from mental health challenges.

This past year also marked many important accolades across the hospital system. In July, St. Joseph’s Health became a member of Trinity Health. Trinity, a respected national

health system based in Livonia, Michigan, is a larger, faith-based organization much like our own. The membership will help us to preserve and promote Catholic health care

in our service area.

Among much recognition, St. Joseph’s Health is proud to share the following successes:

• Ranked the “Best Regional Hospital” in New York State by U.S. News and World Report

• 2015 recipient of the National Research Corporation Consumer Choice Award; 15-time winner

• Named one of the top 15 cardiac surgery centers in the nation

• Recognized as a Magnet Hospital for nursing — a designation given to only 6 percent of hospitals in the nation

As a result of your continued dedication, local health care is stronger than ever. We are excited by your continued support of St. Joseph’s Health as our physicians,

nurses and staff compassionately deliver health care that is among the highest quality patient care available in New York State and across the nation.

We look forward to partnering with you to create an even stronger St. Joseph’s Health for the residents of our Central New York region.

St. Joseph’s Health is connecting more lives than ever before

— providing services to patients throughout Central New York

and northern Pennsylvania. From primary to specialty to home

care, to our Magnet-recognized hospital, and in collaboration

with our community partners, St. Joseph’s Health is advancing

the health of the communities we serve through an expanding

range of health care services to ensure our patients achieve

optimum long-term health.

In July 2015, St. Joseph’s Health finalized its membership with

Trinity Health, a respected national health system located in

Livonia, Michigan. The membership with a larger faith-based

organization strengthens our nearly150-year-old mission of

Catholic health care. Together we are committed to providing

better health, better care and lower operating costs in the

communities we serve.

The Continuum of Care

St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center has been, and remains,

the backbone of our integrated system, delivering award-

winning care and providing enhanced value to our primary,

specialized and urgent care facilities throughout the region.

In 2015, St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center received over 20

certifications and recognitions including being named Best

Regional Hospital by U.S. News and World Report. Our Level III

NICU celebrated 45 years of caring for our littlest patients.

St. Joseph’s operates two state-of-the-art ambulatory surgery

centers for outpatient surgery services that do not require

an overnight stay. Located in Liverpool and Fayetteville, the

award-winning surgery centers offer general surgery, urology,

ear, nose and throat, orthopedics, podiatry, dental surgery and

pain management services.

In 2015, St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center conducted over

9,000 inpatient surgeries, over 10,000 outpatient surgeries,

provided care at nearly 66,000 emergency room visits and

discharged over 26,500 inpatient visits.

St. Joseph’s continuum of care extends to the full spectrum

of health care to include home health, case management

and a broad range of ancillary services. In 2015, St. Joseph’s

provided service for 80,114 outpatient psychiatric visits and

over 129,000 visits through St. Joseph’s Certified Home Health

Care Program.

While we continue to offer award-winning care within the

hospital, it is our comprehensive primary care services

offered throughout multiple locations in the region that help

maximize personal health management and overall well-being.

St. Joseph’s nine seamlessly integrated practices provided

care at nearly 245,000 visits in 2015.

Commitment to the Wider Community

We understand that personal health goes beyond medicine.

For individuals, families and communities to maintain health,

there must be economic stability. Through our partnership

with Northside UP, the Health Train program provides training

and job opportunities in the health care industry to community

members, helping to broaden our workforce and create

opportunities for families. Initiatives like this encourage

workforce development, provide education and foster a

healthy, thriving community.

An integral part of the Syracuse and Central New York

community for over 145 years, St. Joseph’s remains committed

to compassionately providing quality care to the sick and

injured. In 2015, St. Joseph’s formally expanded several pilot

partnerships between primary care providers and specialists

to offer psychiatric telemedicine services in areas where access

to psychiatrists is limited and to better support the provision of

primary care services throughout the region — most recently in

partnership with our affiliate, Lewis County General Hospital.

WOMEN AND CHILDREN’S SERVICES St. Joseph’s Health provides comprehensive, quality health care for women, infants and their families, including treatment for women’s health issues, pediatric care, labor and delivery services, newborn services and neonatal intensive care. Gifts from St. Joseph’s most loyal donors help to provide the latest in medical technology and

support programs that improve health outcomes. Grants received toward St. Joseph’s Women and Children’s Services in 2014 and 2015 include:

Breast Care ServicesIn 2014, Susan G. Komen for the Cure Central New York Affiliate awarded St. Joseph’s Health a

$31,399 grant for the L.E.A.P. (Lymphedema Education and Prevention) from Stage 0 program. Lymphedema has no cure and is a harmful side effect of breast cancer treatment that can lead

to permanent disability if not addressed. The L.E.A.P. from Stage 0 program helps individuals affected by lymphedema — a blockage of the lymphatic system — return to a normal active

life through prevention, early intervention and management of this debilitating condition.

In line with its dedication “to providing support, comfort, and care to breast cancer patients,” the Saint Agatha Foundation awarded a $50,000 grant to St. Joseph’s

in both 2014 and 2015. These gifts serve as “last resort” funding for individuals diagnosed with breast cancer, who “cannot afford their disease” and have nowhere else to turn, when all other potential funding sources have been exhausted.

Understanding that long-term survival for patients with breast cancer continues to improve with earlier detection and that one in eight women will be diagnosed

with breast cancer over the course of her lifetime, the Saint Agatha Foundation also made a $240,000 matching grant toward the purchase of a 3-D imaging

machine and workstation. This 2015 gift is contingent on St. Joseph’s securing another $240,000 in newly matched funds. Grant awards toward this 1:1 match include

$100,000 from the Dorothy and Marshall M. Reisman Foundation and $26,000 from the J.M. McDonald Foundation Inc. If you would like to help fulfill this matching

requirement, please contact St. Joseph’s Health Foundation at (315) 703-2137.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center is one of only 35 Level III Perinatal Centers in New York State, with

a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. As such, the NICU is able to deliver timely, knowledge-driven decisions in the care of all high-risk pregnant women, fetuses and newborns, and provides high-quality

critical care for the diagnosis and treatment of premature and medically fragile newborns. Enhancing care provided in the NICU, the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation and Lockheed Martin Employees’ Federated

Fund each awarded St. Joseph’s a $10,000 grant toward the purchase of a highly specialized combination infant warmer-incubator, the GE Giraffe OmniBed. This state-of-the-art equipment offers enhanced temperature control, sound reduction, infection control and 3600 access to the infant when the need arises to respond to life-threatening situations.

Also helping to enhance patient care for these tiniest members of our community, the Flora Bernice Smith Foundation provided a $16,930 grant, in 2014, to purchase one transcutaneous monitor and one open crib. In 2015, Price Chopper’s Golub Foundation awarded a $1,000 grant to purchase a bedside warmer where feedings can be heated to the ideal temperature for infants who are not immediately ready to breastfeed.

BARIATRIC SERVICESIn 2015, St. Joseph’s Health achieved Comprehensive Center Accreditation for Bariatric Surgery from the American College of Surgeons Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program, in partnership with the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Reflecting quality of care, St. Joseph’s bariatric program has an unparalleled commitment and ability to consistently deliver safe, effective, evidence-based care — in a compassionate, stigma-free environment —not only to bariatric surgery patients, but also to patients receiving medical care through other service lines who are similarly considered obese. Helping St. Joseph’s provide a higher level of care for patients across the system, the Flora Bernice Smith Foundation awarded a $14,720 grant to purchase bariatric recliners and tracking devices. These professional-grade recliners are not only used as bedside chairs but also serve as vital support tools for staff as they care for patients.

REMOVING BARRIERS TO HEALTHY LIFESTYLESAccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “chronic diseases and conditions, such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and arthritis, are among the most common, costly and preventable of all health problems.” As of 2012, nearly half of all adults in the United States had at least one chronic illness, and one in four adults had two or more.

Promoting healthy lifestyles, removing barriers to care and providing quality, affordable health care are goals central to the mission of St. Joseph’s Health. Grants received by St. Joseph’s Health Foundation in 2014 and 2015 that support healthful eating, active living and preventing and managing chronic diseases include:

KeyBank Foundation awarded $15,235 in support of patient education materials and technology for the patient education rooms at St. Joseph’s Primary Care Center-West. Flat-screen televisions, DVD players, iPads, booklets and other patient education resources help to better engage patients in their own treatment and range from proper medication regimens and health risks to prevention techniques, the significance of well care and the importance of exercise and nutrition to wellness.

Here in Central New York, physical activity is frequently restricted due to inclement weather conditions such as snow and near or below freezing temperatures. To provide opportunities for exercise year-round, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield’s Excellus Community Health Awards provided a $4,000 grant to St. Joseph’s Health Foundation to implement a comprehensive indoor walking route program. Opened in February 2016, three walking trails now offer hospital staff and guests a weather-free way to reap the health benefits associated with walking.

The Foundation of the Zonta Club of Syracuse presented St. Joseph’s Health with a $3,000 Ursula Pettengill Award toward nutrition education at Primary Care Center-West. Encouraging attendance at nutritional education classes, these funds were used to purchase program tools, such as measuring spoons, cutting boards and mixing bowls that patients might not otherwise own, nor have the resources to purchase. Food models that are used to teach patients how to recognize proper portion sizes also were purchased.

St. Joseph’s Walkways of Caring are beautiful courtyard settings throughout the hospital grounds that offer an affordable

and permanent way to contribute to St. Joseph’s Health. With an engraved brick or bench you may commemorate a

special physician or hospital department, family member or friend, recognize a hero, or include your own name as a

proud donor. Engraved bricks are installed in spring, summer and fall.

The three Walkways of Caring include St. Francis Garden, located at the front of the hospital; Walk of Valor, at the flagpole

in front of the hospital, which pays tribute to veterans, reservists and active military personnel; and Caritas Park (Latin for

“charity” or “love”), located in front of the College of Nursing.

Proceeds support programs and services throughout the St. Joseph’s system.

For more information about our Walkways of Caring, contact St. Joseph’s Health Foundation at (315) 703-2137 or

The Auxiliary’s annual gift to St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center was over $400,000 — a gift that completes the naming of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit in the Christina M. Nappi Surgical Tower. This naming is in memory of the deceased members of the Auxiliary of St. Joseph’s Health and represents Auxiliary fundraising efforts from baby photo service, book fairs, coffee bar, gift shop, patient TV and telephone and vending machines. Proceeds from our annual wine tasting fundraiser supported the inpatient physical therapy room in the surgical tower.

Operation Backpack for Our Kids filled over 800 backpacks again this year, complete with school supplies, distributed to children who receive their back-to-school physicals at St. Joseph’s outpatient departments, Primary Care Center-West and throughout the hospital. In addition, the Auxiliary purchased books for staff members of St. Joseph’s Primary Care Center-West to distribute to children, newborn to12 years of age, who visit the center for their annual wellness check-ups.

The Cecile Ianno Care and Share Closet, now in its third year, provides adequate clothing for patients who are leaving the hospital after being treated in the hospital’s Emergency Department. The Care and Share Closet is complete with clean t-shirts, sweatpants, sweatshirts, shoes, gloves, hats and more. Donations allow the Auxiliary to continue to purchase garments for St. Joseph’s patients.

In support of nursing education, the Auxiliary funds the Sister Wilhelmina Scholarship (two partial tuition scholarships) and the Sister Mary Obrist Scholarship (a full-tuition scholarship). The scholarships are awarded to incoming students attending St. Joseph’s College of Nursing.

The Ellen Needham Fund was established in memory of the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Dwight Needham. An annual mass is said for those who have been memorialized in the past year and for deceased members of the Auxiliary of St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center. Donated funds are used to purchase art supplies, creative materials, stuffed animals and toys to benefit the children who receive care in St. Joseph’s Emergency Department, St. Joseph’s Primary Care Center-West and the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program. The fund also supports literacy programs for the Primary Care Centers and Intensive Care Nursery by providing books given to children and babies at the time of their discharge.

The Auxiliary continues to provide a variety of services throughout the St. Joseph’s Health system, including managing the volunteers at the main information desk, operating the gift shop, and providing free television and telephone to palliative care unit patients.

Directed by a volunteer board of over 30 members, the Auxiliary is dedicated to serving the needs and cares of St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center.

New members are always welcome to help support the mission of the hospital. If you would like to join the Auxiliary or for more information, please contact the Auxiliary office at (315) 448-6100 or go to www.sjhsyr.org/auxiliary.

Graduation 2015St. Joseph’s College of Nursing graduated 147 students in 2015. The associate degree in applied science (A.A.S.) with a major in nursing was conferred on the graduates in both the weekday and evening/weekend option. Patricia E. Drea, MPA, RN, Class of 1969, chief operating officer of Visiting Angels, was the weekday May graduation speaker. The evening/weekend December 2015 graduates were the first to graduate in the new accelerated 18-month program. Susan Berger, Ed.D., ANP, RN, executive vice president, director of health services for Cazenovia College, delivered the commencement address to the class. The NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination) is a nationwide examination for the licensing of nurses in the United States and Canada. St. Joseph’s College of Nursing graduates for 2015 achieved a 90.6% pass rate, well above state and national means. Over 90% of the 2015 graduates now work at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center.

Awards and scholarships awarded to students of the College of Nursing during 2015 totaled well over $50,000. These awards and scholarships are funded by alumni and donors of the college.

Dedication of the Center for Experiential LearningOn June 6, 2015, in the presence of family, friends, alumni and colleagues, the College of Nursing dedicated and renamed their simulation and clinical learning labs in honor of Margaret (Meg) Lawyer Meccariello, M.S., RN, Class of 1981. Meg was the Clinical Learning Lab manager from 2000-2012. During her tenure as the manager, Meg developed the simulation learning lab and curriculum for the nursing students and other health professionals within the St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center network. Because of her creativity, incredible talent, ingenuity and sharing spirit in home-grown solutions for simulation nursing education, Meg became nationally recognized as a pioneer in this field.

The learning lab now bears the name Margaret (Meg) Lawyer Meccariello Center for Experiential Learning — dedicated in recognition of Meg’s creativity, caring nature and vision as a pioneer in simulation nursing education. Following the dedication, a reception was held in honor of Meg and all of her contributions to nursing education.

Sadly, on November 19, 2015, Meg passed away following a long illness. The College will be forever grateful for her dedication to the education of nursing students.

Commitment to NursingThe 2015 Commitment to Nursing Ceremony and Awards Brunch was held October 4, 2015. At the awards brunch held earlier in the morning, weekday option Class of 2016 and evening/weekend option Class of 2015 students in their second level of studies were awarded scholarships and merit awards.

At the Commitment to Nursing Ceremony later in the day, held at Immaculate Conception Church in Fayetteville, students demonstrated their dedication to the nursing profession by reciting the Florence Nightingale pledge. Students received a cross pin from upperclassmen, symbolizing the inspiration of St. Francis in their practice as nursing students with compassion and reverence.

In her address to the students, Marianne Markowitz, Dean/Vice President, shared two national news stories with ties to the College of Nursing. Kateri Allard, Class of 2008, spoke on behalf of the entire nursing profession when she chose to educate Joy Behar, a national talk show host, after her misinformed comments following the Miss America pageant. While many people who saw the pageant understood how proud Miss Colorado was to share her story about her nursing profession, Ms. Behar did not. She publicly referred to Miss Colorado’s scrubs as a “costume” and questioned why she was wearing a “doctor’s stethoscope.” Kateri has a well-established blog, and Dean Markowitz, with Kateri’s permission, was proud to share what she wrote in an open letter to Joy Behar.

Kateri said that rather than be angry with Ms. Behar she chose to educate her about what nurses do because the first step in resolving ignorance is education. Her well-written letter invited Joy Behar and her co-hosts to learn more about the 3 million nurses who make up the largest proportion of

the health care team. Kateri gave examples throughout her letter of how nurses provide compassionate and selfless care to patients, each and every day. Another story, which garnered national attention, involved a young woman named Amanda from the Albany area who, as an infant in 1977, suffered severe burns. That year, as part of their annual report, the hospital published a picture of a young nurse cuddling Amanda.

Amanda said she had always treasured photos of her infant self in the young nurse’s arms. These pictures served as a comfort to her when, as a child, she was often bullied for her scars. Twenty years ago Amanda tried, without success, to find out the nurse’s name. But when Amanda posted photos, once again seeking help with her search, thanks to Facebook, she had an answer in just a day. Amanda was able to reunite with her nurse, Susan Berger. Dean Markowitz was proud to share that Susan Berger is a member of the college governing board and the commencement speaker for the 2015 December evening/weekend graduates.

Lastly, the students were told to be proud of their rigorous education. The College’s talented faculty have taught them that learning is lifelong. They are privileged to work in a Magnet institution alongside some of the best nurses in the country. Students were reminded that not just on Commitment to Nursing day but every day they should renew their commitment to the nursing profession, to make a difference in their practice.

Creation of the Student CenterWe are excited and pleased that renovations to convert the sixth floor of Marian Hall into a student center that includes a dining area, group and quiet study rooms, individual testing rooms and areas for relaxation began in late 2015 and were completed in early 2016. The sixth floor has become a place where students can have a sense of community within the college. It allows students to enjoy the physical space, encourages them to stay engaged, learn well, build lasting relationships with each other and graduate ready to enter the work force. This was the largest renovation within the building since it was constructed in 1960, when every student lived on the dorm floors. Over the past five to seven years, the residential population has dwindled to less than 10 percent of the student body. There are now many more students commuting from LeMoyne College for our 1+2+1 program, the Dual Degree Partnership in Nursing. We have also seen a rise in the number of students participating in our weekend option. Prior to this renovation there was a lack of adequate space for students to study and recharge during their days in the classroom and after their clinical experience.

The renovations are funded by donations from College of Nursing alumni and friends. The student center was completed and opened to students in March 2016.

St. Joseph’s Health receives $100,000 grant to provide community-based dental prevention and treatment services to children ages five and under.

Dental disease is the leading chronic illness among children, especially in low-income families. Thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Health Foundation for Western and Central New York, St. Joseph’s Health has extended dental care beyond the brick and mortar walls of its Dental Office to launch CHOMPERS! Portable Dental Care Program — the most recent expansion of the Health Foundation’s initiative that brings a community-based portable dental program for children ages 5 and under.

Serving a vital community need, St. Joseph’s portable dental program launched in late 2015. The grant from the Health Foundation funded the purchase of new portable dental equipment and program expenses to introduce the service at the St. Joseph’s Dental Clinic at St. Joseph’s Primary Care Center-West (PCC-West) location, and plans are in the works for St. Joseph’s portable dental program to expand in the near future, focusing on areas where the need for quality dental care is high.

According to the Health Foundation of Western and Central New York, in 2009 approximately 94 percent of Medicaid-eligible children under 3 years old and 62 percent of children between 3 and 5 years old did not receive any dental care. Dental disease is nearly 100 percent preventable; however, access to quality dental care can be difficult for families.

“Dental disease is the single most common chronic childhood disease in the United States, but it’s almost 100 percent preventable. Through our CHOMPERS! program, we are excited to work with partners like St. Joseph’s Dental Clinic to bring dental care to where children already are in the community and help them build lifelong healthy habits,” said Health Foundation President Ann F. Monroe.

St. Joseph’s saw its first CHOMPERS! patient on December 8, 2015 — a very nervous 9-year-old girl accompanied by her mother and extended family members, something very common for this patient population. By the end of her appointment, which included a cleaning and x-rays, she was relaxed and smiling. For this family and many others, it is a significant step to be able to receive dental care within the same primary care facility where many children see their pediatricians.

The primary care providers at PCC-West are closely collaborating with the dental team to ensure that patients are receiving quality, affordable dental care. Matthew Hall, D.D.S., became medical director for the dental clinic in 2011. He firmly believes that quality health care should not only be offered in a traditional dental care environment but also delivered directly to people within their own communities. An advocate for those he serves, Dr. Hall believes that healthier communities are built by not only providing quality health care but by also improving the design of the system used to deliver it.

St. Joseph’s comprehensive electronic health record system provider, EPIC Systems Corporation, has also incorporated this dental program into St. Joseph’s electronic health records. This is the first dental health record implementation EPIC has integrated into its comprehensive system. And in support of the CHOMPERS! initiative, EPIC made a $4,500 gift to St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center Foundation.

“The support we have seen from a nationwide company like EPIC speaks volumes to the innovation and impact of this program,” said Chuck Fennell, vice president for Information Management and chief information officer at St. Joseph’s.

As of June 30, 2016, 258 patients have received dental care through this new program: 96 children 5 and under, 132 children ages 6 to18, and 30 adults age 19 or older.

“Creating this type of access to dental care is a milestone for health care in our community. We recently conducted an assessment of the community’s health needs, and this will fill a very specific need in the Near Westside neighborhood of Syracuse,” said Mark Murphy, senior vice president for System Development and Ambulatory Care Leadership at St. Joseph’s. “Our dedicated approach to population health is focused on creating community access to more of this type of preventative care. The CHOMPERS! program will be another great feature to add to our efforts in the New York State Health Foundation’s ‘Healthy Neighborhoods Fund’ initiative on the Near Westside.”

To make a contribution to the CHOMPERS! program please mail check payable to St. Joseph’s Health Foundation. Mail to 973 James Street, Suite 250, Syracuse, NY 13203.Ensure that your contribution helps uninsured/underinsured children receive the essential dental care they both need and deserve by writing “CHOMPERS/DENTAL” on your check.

St. Joseph’s Health Foundation is honored to be the recipient of a gift that ensures continued growth and opportunity within the neighborhood. This past June, the Foundation dedicated the “Richard and Sarah Pietrafesa Training Center” on the main campus of St. Joseph’s Health — a gift made by the children of Sarah and the late Richard Pietrafesa.

“When I’m at St. Joseph’s I feel like I’m at home,” said Sarah (Lombardi) Pietrafesa — and in some ways she is.

You see, in 1927, Sarah was born in the Prospect Hill neighborhood, and her childhood home stood where St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center emergency and operating facilities are located now. “The last time I visited St. Joseph’s I told the nurses that we were standing in my home, they couldn’t believe it!” Sarah’s family would eventually move down the road to Sedgwick Farm. It was here she would meet her husband, the late Richard (Dick) Pietrafesa. Sarah and Dick made their home in the city and would not have had it any other way.

Those local to Central New York, and many beyond, will find the Pietrafesa name familiar. Dick dedicated his career to his family’s business, the Joseph J. Pietrafesa Co., a well-known clothing manufacturer then located on North Salina Street.

Founded in 1918, the four-story factory manufactured high-quality men’s clothing under the Learbury label and operated a retail store at street level. The building that once housed the factory still stands and is now known as Learbury Centre.

Sarah is quick to share that Dick could do any job in the factory, including sewing a suit, top to bottom, by hand! The business and the people were his passion. “Everything was made by hand, and it was a wonderful family business in every sense. Employees were highly trained and the clothing was top quality,” said Sarah. “All of the employees at the company were immigrants, and sometimes entire families worked there. Dick believed it was the strong sense of family that made the business so successful, and he was happy to provide opportunities for those new to America.”

When Dick Pietrafesa passed away in 2013, his wife and children sought to honor his life and achievements in a way that would benefit the community and recognize his contributions. Much to Sarah’s surprise, her children planned to honor her as well.

“When we learned of the opportunity to name the new St. Joseph’s training center, we knew it was the perfect homage,” said Anthony Pietrafesa, Sarah and Dick’s son. “The Northside neighborhood has always been special to our family. It’s where we’ve lived and worked for generations. We knew this would be an ideal way to honor our parents and their commitment to continuing the legacy of job creation and opportunity.”

St. Joseph’s has always been a part of the family’s history. Over the years, the family has not only received health care services from the hospital, but other family members have been counted among St. Joseph’s physicians.

One of Sarah’s earliest memories is of walking up Prospect Hill to the hospital with her brother as they went together to get their tonsils out. “We’ve all had very good experiences at St. Joseph’s and are a bit attached,” Sarah says with a smile in her voice. “St. Joseph’s is an excellent facility, and the training center faces North Salina Street where the factory was located. My husband worked in that factory from the time he was 14 years old. This is like being at home for him.”

A Legacy of Opportunity on the Northside

The Northside neighborhoods of Syracuse have historically been home to new American families eager to gain employment and achieve the American dream. This continues today as individuals and families from around the world settle in their new homes, in these same neighborhoods, with dreams to succeed as strong as those who came before them.

The Richard and Sarah Pietrafesa Training Center will be the primary training location for hospital staff as they learn new systems and programs to ensure delivery of high-quality health care services to patients. St. Joseph’s Health and its community partners are currently developing programming that will provide training opportunities for community members.

“The generous gift from the Pietrafesa children, in honor of their parents, helps us to continue making a difference within our community and ensures continued excellence in health care,” said Vincent Kuss, vice president of development for St. Joseph’s Health Foundation. “We are heartened to be a part of such special memories for Sarah and her family, and grateful for their support of our commitment to exceptional care and quality of life in the community.”

St. Joseph’s and its affiliates are committed to the growth and transformation taking place in the neighborhood. Through community partnerships, St. Joseph’s has worked to improve infrastructure, housing and economic opportunity on the Northside and throughout the community. And, just as Joseph J. Pietrafesa Co. did for decades, St. Joseph’s seeks to provide its neighbors with opportunities for training and prosperity.

The Pietrafesas are pleased that their gift will continue to provide training opportunities for St. Joseph’s employees and eventually community members. Sarah spends the winter months in Florida and the remainder of the year in her Syracuse residence. “From where I live,” she says, “I can see the progress over all these years. I am happy about the way St. Joseph’s has improved the neighborhood. I’m honored to be a part of it, and I know Dick would be too.”

On behalf of St. Joseph’s Health Foundation, we would

like to thank you for your generous and continuous

support! As you may know, we rely on the special

generosity of friends like you, committed to the Central

New York region, to keep our facilities and key programs

at the forefront of primary and specialty care. Your

philanthropic investment is so important to us in reaching

out to everyone in need of superior health care, regardless

of economic circumstance. For almost a century and a half,

delivering personalized care of the highest quality has

been the hallmark of our pioneering Sisters of St. Francis,

physicians and nurses, employees, volunteers and

community partners. As we reflect on the hospital’s

patient-centered values and strong mission created

by Saint Marianne Cope and the Sisters of St. Francis

back in 1869, it is inspiring to realize that these guiding

principles remain the underlying foundation of St. Joseph’s

higher level of care. Family, friends and alumni who have

invested in our vision are so greatly appreciated. Please

know that your gift truly makes a difference!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROUS SUPPORT!
