IN MEMORIAM RUTH STEVENS LIVINGSTON (Mrs. Robert A. Livingston) With the death of Ruth S. Livingston on December 14, 1967 THE ORTON SOCIETY lost a most valued friend and longtime helper. As executive secretary of the Society at its Boston headquarters in 1959-1960, she arranged for the publication of its first reprints and she contributed her experience as a writer to many of the Bulletins of the Orton Society and the compilation of Dr. Orton's papers for Monograph I. Mrs. Livingston's interest in Dr. Orton's work began in the early 1940's when she arranged to interview him for a feature story about handi- capped children and came away converted to the cause of helping strepho- symbolic pupils. Later, she joined Dr. and Mrs. Orton as their general office assistant, and many young patients and their parents will remember her graciousness and genuine interest which put them at ease while waiting to see the "reading doctor." After Dr. Orton's death she encouraged Mrs. Orton in her efforts to establish high professional standards for all the meetings and the publications of THE ORTON SOCIETY and she shared many of the physical tasks involved in preparing and mailing the annual Bulletins. Most of Mrs. Livingston's contributions to the Society were behind the scenes, the way she preferred it, and this was characteristic of the many ways in which she helped people from all walks of life in her private life. Accustomed to travel and living abroad, she maintained a keen interest in international affairs and everything she did had a certain elegance about it, but she could adapt to almost any circumstance and find something interesting in almost every person she met. She had style and a flair for living that made her someone very special. THE ORTON SOCIETY is indeed much richer for the bright strand of Ruth Livingston's gift of her time, her ability, and herself to its work. JLO iv
