Commercial and open source software’s
availability has given the librarians
various options to go for library
automation.
The question of fees associated with the
commercial software and the
sustainability, technical support with the
open source software always put the
librarians in the dilemma.
The creation of software as per library
need by the its mother institution, solve
both the questions.

In-House Library Management Software (IHLMS) is usually not discussed much
among the library professionals.
IHLMS Remove dependency on others for the maintenance and support services, as
the software is being designed by in-house personnel.

Unique Features
Exporting and importing of files: This feature is used to update the books, students and teacher database.
Multitasking- The software is protected with a password. It can be opened in various windows at the same time and different task of accessing and circulation can be performed simultaneously.
Addition of Multiple copies- If a book receive more than one copy, just by putting the no. of copies in the field of accession detail, the software assign the further continues accession no.to the duplicate copies.
Total no. of books just a click away- Software has a module of showing the number of titles and volume just on a click. This helps the library to know the total number of duplicate titles.

Books can be added to the
database in two ways-
• Adding them individually
or
• uploading an updated
accession excel sheet (To use
this facility first of the book
data has to be exported and in
the same excel sheet new
books should be added and
uploaded back to update the
collection).

Remove, Modify and Add Back of Books
Remove Book:
Means weeding out of discarded books.
Modify Book:
Use to make any changes to the book if any (Even after accessing the book)
Add Back:
Use to add back the removed book. This is useful if the discarded title arrives again in the library.
The required changes can be modified.

Circulation Module
Librarian have to enter the admission number of the child and accession number of the book,
then a click on issue/return will finish the activity. After entering the admission no. the
software shows the details of the child.

Change password - To change the admin password.
Book Records
• To generate circulation report. Where one can specify the date period for which report is
required.
• To know the total number of books in the library and the distinct books (Total titles)

Update Database
To update the student &
teacher database
Can be completed in two
ways:
Either Individually just by
adding basic information of
name, class and admission no.
for students and name, initial
and subject of teacher.
Or by completing the
exported excel sheet and
uploading the same after
updating the data.

Export
• Under this page of management module the
database file of students, teachers, books and
weeded out books.
• If staff wants to make the changes into these
database collectively rather then entering individual
entries. Than firstly the file has to be exported from
here and after necessary changes the same file has
to be uploaded.
• Uploading the new excel sheet will erase the
circulation data.

Conclusion
The richness of in-house software has changed access methods of all users in retrieving information.
Advantages of the IHLMS like-
IT teachers available on campus hence the library need not bother about any technical issues and support.
Provided faculty and students of school with an OPAC
Information management is the basic goal of any library in order to provide a better service. In this regard the development of in- house software can be a better way to manage the information in school libraries.
