This Week’s MeetingTopic; Fund Raiser and Fellowship, “TheGreat Gatsby”

As President John as already said we had a greatturn out on a very wet night. As can be seen fromthe photos on the next page those who came alonggot into the spirit of this opening night event.

Congratulations to Kathy and Fred for winning thebest theme dress awards.

Before writing about thefilm it is best to talk aboutthe book on which it isbased. The Great Gats-by is a 1925 novel written

by American author F.Scott Fitzgerald that fol-lows a cast of charactersliving in the fictional townof West Egg on prosper-ous Long Island in the sum-mer of 1922. The storyprimarily concerns theyoung and mysterious mil-lionaire Jay Gatsby andhis quixotic passion for the

beautiful Daisy Buchanan.Considered to be Fitzger-ald's magnum opus, The Great Gatsby exploresthemes of decadence, idealism, resistance to change, social upheaval, and excess, creating a portrait ofthe Jazz Age that has been described as a caution-ary tale regarding the American Dream.

Fitzgerald, inspired by the parties he had attendedwhile visiting Long Island's north shore, began plan-ning the novel in 1923 desiring to produce, in hiswords, "something new—something extraordinaryand beautiful and simple and intricately patterned.

First published by Scribner's in April 1925, TheGreat Gatsby received mixed reviews and soldpoorly; in its first year, the book only sold 20,000copies. Fitzgerald died in 1940, believing himself tobe a failure and his work forgotten. His work, spear-headed by The Great Gatsby, experienced a reviv-al during World War II, and the novel became apart of high school curriculum in the following dec-ades. The book has remained popular since, leading

to numerous stage and film adaptations. The GreatGatsby is widely considered to be a literary classicand a contender for the title "Great American Nov-el". The book is consistently ranked among the great-

est works of American literature. Total sales nowexceed 25 million!

Clearly folk being divided about the movie is notunexpected as this represents the view of many crit-ics and audiences. However, what has not been giv-

en any publicity, at least to my knowledge, is thatBaz Lurman’s production is the most critically ac-claimed and popular of the three post war cinemaversions.

The 1949 version staring Alan Ladd and directed byElliot Nugent scored 29% with critics and 50% withaudiences albeit from a small sample and presuma-bly this was folk seeing it in recent times. The 1974version starring Robert Redford, directed by JackClayton, managed 37% and 53% respectively from

a significantly larger sample size. Compared tothese our Australian grand cinema showman BazLuhrmann is running at 51% and 72% respectively.

It is fascinating to read how differently the criticsrate the film with diametrically opposite views on thesame aspect. For example, the film story line is closeto the original book, this is seen as a strength bysome but a weakness by many.

Personally I gave the film four stars.

And for those who worry about such things; no theyellow Duesenberg Model J was not around in 1922and neither where the Empire State and ChryslerBuildings ( poetic licence).

In case you lost count the term “old sport” is said 55times in the film!
