International projects for clean water, sanitation, health andeducation in Sabu, a remote island in East Indonesia, havebeen a big part of our club for many years. (Sabu is alsospelt Savu or Sawu – very confusing I know!)

At our meeting last weekwe had an excellent

presentation from Interna-tional Director Fred Hof-mann and two members ofhis “Sabu team”, MalcolmParks and Geoff Stock-dale, which gave us anexcellent picture of whatthese projects are about.

Malcolm received nomina-tions for an Oscar fromthose present for his pro-

duction of the Sabu pro-jects video – well doneMalcolm

It is amazing how muchfinancial support we have

been fortunate enough to receive through the efforts of Fredand Geoff, not only from within our club but also from manyoutside sources. On behalf of Rotary Club of Beaumaris, Iwould like to thank the many generous private donors, as wellas the Rotary Clubs of Feldbach (Austria), Seminyak (Bali) andBrighton North for their contributions to the work we are doingin Sabu.

Geoff, as well as providing Bintang beers for all of us,spoke about his initiative of a tax deductible donationscheme for assisting with the education of the Sabunesestudents under the care of Pastor Franz (the Catholic mis-sionary on Sabu). This is an excellent opportunity to seekassistance from others you know who may wish to contrib-ute to a worthwhile project where 100% of the funds gothe cause. All the information is on our website in the sec-tion Sabu Island story. Details of the Sabu Story may befound on our website. This will be updated over the com-ing weeks with the latest information from Fred, Geoffand Malcolm.

At the conclusion of the evening Malcolm auctioned offgenuine Sabunese Ikats (textiles) and raised $175 to-wards Geoff’s education program.

This week (Anzac day) there is no meeting at VGC, how-ever Heather is organising dinner at 6 Keys. The follow-

ing week (2 May), we are back at VGC with guestspeaker Oscar Yildiz talking on A Bully Free Australia.

Stay safe everyone.

This Weeks Speakers; Fred Hofmann, Mal-colm Parks, Geoff StockdaleTopic; Sabu Island Project Update

Fred, Malcolm and Geoff combined to provide a

comprehensive report back on their visit to Sabu dur-ing October 2012.

The visit was undertaken by RCOB members FredHoffman, David Langworthy, Malcolm Parks andGeoff Stockdale and RC of Brighton North membersNorm Brash and Richard Potter

The purpose of the trip was to examine the currentstatus of;

1) Water wells2) Student accommodation in Kupang & Sabu3) Start planning the installation of a new toilet

block at Girls Hostel at Seba, and4) Investigate possible new projects.

Malcolm conveyed all the de-tail colour of this visit with amarvellous 88 slide presenta-tion containing embedded vid-eos and music.

The presentation gave all whosaw it a clear picture of wayof life of Sabu and the chal-lenges faced by Father Franzin trying to help educate themany children he tries to carefor.

As a result of the trip the team concluded that themost urgent requirements were;

1) New toilet block at Seba Girls Hostel2) More water wells3) New motorbike for Pastor Franz4) New jack hammer for water wells5) Water filters at Seba Girls Hostel6) Mosquito nets (43% of the population of Sabu

have malaria)7) Two new teachers houses

Thanks to the generosity of our partner Rotary Clubsof Feldbach (Austria), Seminyak (Bali) and BrightonNorth substantial progress has already been made

on a number of these urgent items.

We will find a way of including much of this presen-tation on our website in the near future.

Geoff Stockdale spoke on anotherparticularly urgent need for fundsto support the students in the hos-tels at Seba and Kupang. FatherFranz has being doing this formany years with money donated

from his relatives but as they agethis is becoming more difficult.There is an urgent need to estab-lish alternate sources of on-goingfunding. Current funding is onlysupplying very basic requirements(one meal of mainly rice per day).These needs and how you can helpare shown in more detail in thebrochure on the following page.

Presentations werethen made to Kenand Joan Dugganand Heather andKerrie of Thank Yougifts from the“Sabuanese” fortheir olive oil fundraising which leadto a new water well.

Malcolm con-

cluded with anauction of Ikatscarves as men-tioned in Presi-dent John’s col-umn.

Altogether it was a wonderful evening and con-firmed how important it is that the RCOB continues tosupport Sabu. Another trip to Sabu is planned for

this October. Get on board.
