PRESIDENT’S COMMENT

Everything seems to be crazy this time of year – just trygetting a car park at Southland! We all seem to be run-ning around getting our last minute shopping done, catch-ing up with friends, sending off Christmas cards, gettingthe house ready for the family visiting from overseas orinterstate, and so on.

But let’s hope it is a time of joy and happiness, regard-

less of the craziness. I believe we can also make it a timeof reflection – thinking about how blessed we are andhow hard it must be for many less fortunate in the world.

We as Rotarians do make a difference to those less for-tunate. Let us continue to do so in 2013 and beyond.

At our last meeting we had a most enlightening speaker,Neil Cole, talk to us about something that is a major issuein our society – mental illness. Neil spoke from first hand

experience as he has suffered from bipolar mood disor-der from a young age. See Neil’s story inside this In

Gear.

Mary Sealy’s Mum Anne was a guest our meeting, as was

Roy Norris, who has visited us previously. It is always apleasure to have guests come to our meetings, whether itis a family member visiting from overseas, or a possiblefuture Rotarian!

We were delighted to receive a letter from Aileen Arija,

a student living in PNG. Beaumaris Rotary has been sup-porting Aileen since 2005 in her studies. This week we will be winding up the year with our Christ-mas breakup party at VGC. Don’t forget to wear your

This Weeks Speaker; Neil ColeTopic; Stability in Mind

Stability In Mind:‘This memoir is the story of the first politician in Aus-

tralia to publicly admit tohaving a mental illness -bipolar mood disorder.Neil Cole was a lawyer, aMelbourne City Councillorand a Member of the Vic-torian Parliament. Afteronly five years in parlia-ment he was diagnosed with bipolar mood disor-der and put onto lithium. The revelation, the cathar-tic experience of this di-agnosis changed his lifeforever. Having lived withthe unpleasantness of theillness, the lack of diagnosis over a period of seventeenyears since he first sought treatment, and the onset of theillness, made it difficult to adjust.

Finally whether it is his early life, school, university, familyupbringing, politics or the stage it is all interesting, novel, lots of humour, pathos, and revelation about living with amental illness. The memoir will offer hope and an explana-tion of how to live with bipolar mood disorder’.

Neil is a member of the Rotary Club of Albert Park.

Neil’s talk was a fascinating insight into the complex-

ities of mental illness and the extent to which individ-uals and society struggle to manage satisfactorily.

With the initial signs of the illness occurring at aboutthe age of 16 it took until the age of 35 before aproper diagnosis was established and a path to-wards appropriate medication ( a combination of

lithium and anti-depressants) begun. This was de-spite seeing many medical practitioners who simplymisdiagnosed (or often did not bother to even ascer-tain) the symptoms.

His illness was made public as part of a factionalpower battle within the State Labor party. But thisfailed, at least initially, and he found strong supportwithin his election and was returned with an in-creased majority. Ultimately he narrowly lost Partyendorsement for the seat and left parliament.

Since then he has worked for the Mental Health Re-search Institute as an Associate Professor and as alay expert working with clients. He has extensively

studied mental illness and can speak with authorityfrom both a theoretical , practical an personal expe-rience; a rare and powerful combination.

In addition Neil found that, once his illness was stabi-

lised by appropriate medication, his latent creativityblossomed and he has become a playwright andauthor. Academic studies have shown that a signifi-cant proportion of creative people have mental ill-nesses (Touched with Fire: Manic-Depressive Illnessand the Artistic Temperament, K. R. Jamison). How-ever not all people with mental illness are creative.

Neil’s main message was the lack of knowledge that

still surrounds mental illness in most of the community. In his experience open discussion of the extent towhich such illnesses can raise libido, disinhibit sexual-

ity and spending control tend to be trivialised asmatters for laughter. Melancholia, pointlessness, lackof sleep lead to a 13% suicide rate amongst suffer-ers. However, often the real cause of such suicide isignored by family and by the media in search of abetter headline.

Since leaving politics, Cole has written over twelveplays, most of them performed by La Mama Thea-tre.His first play, Alive at Williamstown Pier, won theGriffin Award for New Australian Playwriting in

1999.[ In 2001, he was awarded the CentenaryMedal for service to Australian society and litera-ture.

Cole's debut novel, Colonel Surry's Insanity, was pub-lished in 2010. The novel, about a fictional soldier(John Surry) who pleads not guilty to a charge oftheft on the grounds of insanity, was based on inter-views with twenty sufferers of manic depression, aswell as his own perspective.

Ed. I read Neil’s memoir over the weekend. High-

ly recommended for its insights into both mentalillness and politics.
