and that of all the other members who met andgreeted guests, collected payments and helped in somany ways is greatly appreciated.

Tony Phillips in perhaps his last appearance as ser-geant for a while conducted his usual quiz and fine

session and raised a very handy amount. Tony, bythe way, nominated Peter Grey’s CCASVA(Cambodian Children against Starvation and Vio-lence Association) as his charity of choice for the ser-geant’s fines raised during the year.

Rewa Jones again stepped up to the plate to spendtime with the team that farewelled John; Fred, David(L), Ross and Malcolm (P). Despite all of Rewa’sguidance and ministrations they all managed to findtheir two left feet and lack of rhythm on the night but

carried off the requirements of their theatrical debutsuperbly. Well done to all.

John presented two Paul Harris Fellow Awards toAdrian Culshaw and Malcolm Sawle for their commit-ment and contribution to the club. Congratulations toyou both.

John also awarded a number of Certificates of Ap-preciation to:

Incoming PresidentRon D. Burton TalksAbout This Year’sTheme

Rotary Club of Norman, Ok-

lahoma, USA (2013-14)Ron Burton, the RI president, retired as president of theUniversity of OklahomaFoundation Inc. in 2007. Heis a member of the Ameri-can Bar Association and isadmitted to practice beforethe U.S. Supreme Court. Ronis a founder and past president of the Norman PublicSchool Foundation, and founder and past board

member of the Norman Community Foundation. Hewas vice president of the Last Frontier Council of theBoy Scouts of America and received the Silver Bea-ver Award. A Rotarian since 1979, he has served asRI director, Rotary Foundation trustee vice chair, In-ternational Assembly moderator, committee chair,Permanent Fund national adviser, regional RotaryFoundation coordinator, and aide to the president.Ron has received the RI Service Above Self Awardand the Foundation’s Distinguished Service Awardand International Service Award for a Polio-Free

World. He and his wife, Jetta, have two children andthree grandchildren.

He unveiled the RI theme during the opening plenarysession of the 2013 International Assembly in SanDiego, California, USA, the annual training event forincoming district governors.“If we really want to take Rotary service forward, then we must make sure that every single Rotarianhas the same feeling about Rotary that each one ofus here has today,” Burton said. “We need to makesure that every Rotarian has a meaningful role toplay, that they’re all making a contribution, and thattheir contribution is valued.”

Burton said the July launch of The Rotary Founda-tion’s new grant model, Future Vision, makes it anexciting time to be a Rotarian. He said the newgrant model, which has been used by about 100 pi-lot districts since 2010, represents a new era for theFoundation, and will help Rotarians get excitedabout Rotary’s ability to change lives.

“It takes everything that is wonderful about Rotaryand raises it to a new level — by encouraging big-ger, more sustainable projects while providing in-creased flexibility for local projects, both of which

address the needs of the community being served,”he said.

Burton asked the incoming district governors to takethe lead in helping their clubs through the transition, with the assistance of their district Rotary Foundation

chairs, who also attended the assembly this year. The training sessions are focusing heavily on equip-ping these leaders to go back to their districts asexperts on the new grant model.

Before the assembly, Burton asked each of the in-coming governors to make a donation in their nameto The Rotary Foundation in order to demonstrateleadership by example. At the assembly, he an-nounced that all 537 governors-elect had complied;along with donations from all RI Board members and

Foundation Trustees, the contributions totaledUS$675,412.

“Now, I have to believe that some of this is moneythat The Rotary Foundation probably would nothave received had I not asked. And I think that this isan important lesson” he said. “If you want somebodyelse to do something, you can just sit around andwait for them to get the idea, or you can ask.”

Burton applied that lesson also to membership devel-opment, which he insisted is the responsibility of eve-

ry Rotarian. He told the audience that although hehad been an active member of the Key Club, ayouth program of Kiwanis International, he went onto join Rotary simply because the Rotary Club ofNorman, Oklahoma, invited him to.

“You have to ask,” he said.

But Burton emphasized that the job doesn’t end whena new member joins: “It’s not done until that newmember is engaged in Rotary, inspired by Rotary,

and uses the power of Rotary service to changelives.”
