Now That’s How You Put on a Show!

It was showtime for Gangs ‘n’ Gals this week with performances on Tuesday and Wednesday. The scene was set... Big Bucks' Hot Joint...the hottest speakeasy in town.

Narrated by old timer Jack Horner (Fin Tunney) star of the speakeasy Beatrice Riley (India Sahota) was going through tough times, putting up with catty, back-stabbing Velma (Sophie Tarring) she befriends new waiter Donald (Daniel Burgess). Owner of the speakeasy, Big Bucks (Matthew Hodson) is experiencing financial and family problems, his step-brother, Antonio (Elliot Thompson) is stealing all of his business and the hottest joint in town might go under...the solution...put on a real theatre show, to raise enough money to keep the joint open!

The script, penned by Charlotte Armitage and Rose Blackburne, twisted and turned with interlinked storylines. The 1920s songs were sung beautifully, from up beat, all cast numbers to spine tingling solos. The Charleston based choreography was energetic and fun and the acting was simply tremendous! Gangs ‘n’ Gals was a super hot show. The show created completely from scratch, showed off some terrific Year 8 talent, along with the direction and assistance of a brilliant Post 16 team, you all did brilliantly. The commitment of the cast demonstrates that our younger students have self-management and organisation skills in bucket loads. Miss Watson along with the Creative Arts team have put in a huge amount of time and effort to put the show together which gave your friends and parents a show to remember!

The audience were enthralled from start to finish, with both nights selling out...it really was the hottest ticket in town this week!

But who is going to play the main part...Bea or Velma?

Oh no...Big Bucks Speakeasy may go under! Lets put on a play to save the joint!

I’m gonna Charleston back to Charleston..all in the

name of the show!

Watch out boys...here’s brother Antonio

throwing his weight around!

Hey Donald...are you sweet on Bea?

Backstage Velma fights with

Bea...poor Bea!

If you didn’t get a ticket and didn’t get to see the show, here’s what you missed...

Donny you can be a star too...

Have they done enough to save the day?

Big Bucks is saved...by a donation from a secret old timer!

Have we got a mole boys? Hurray!

There’s no business like show business!

At the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, Armistice Day marks the end of the First World War. This year Armistice Day falls on Tuesday 11th November and we will observe two minute silence starting at 11am. The silence is meant as a tribute to those who lost their lives fighting for their country during both World Wars and other conflicts since, and at this time in 1918 the guns of Europe fell silent. After four years of bitter fighting, The Great War was finally over.

The Armistice was signed at 5am in a railway carriage in the Forest of Compiegne, France on November 11, 1918. Six hours later, at 11am, the war ended. King George V issued the original proclamation in 1919 which called for a two minute silence: "All locomotion should cease, so that, in perfect stillness, the thoughts of everyone may be concentrated on reverent remembrance of the glorious dead."

The bell will sound at 11am to mark the start of the silence and again at 11.02 marking the end, students should remain in their classroom until the end of the silence. Please join us in paying your respects during this time and you can help and show your support by buying a poppy from your Key Stage Hub. The poppies on this page were created by Mrs Romanowski’s Key Stage 3 classes last year. Students made a poppy and wrote how they were connected to WW1 or WW2. There are some amazing, inspirational stories, some wrote about family members currently fighting in the army, some wrote of family who were involved in WW1 and WW2. The end result is on display in P2.

Working 9-5...What a Way to make a Living! As expected we have received fantastic feedback from our work experience employers. Year 11 spent the last week before half term enjoying everything that the world of work can offer. Some local employers tweeted about their experience, both Halliday Clark and STEM Bradford let us know what their new employees were up to.

All in all a great week, our Year 11s have done themselves and the school proud.

Alan Gibbons Visit

The acclaimed writer, Alan Gibbons, came into school on Tuesday to host Year 8 writing Workshops. Alan captivated his Year 8 audience.

He gave a lively, animated talk to the whole year group and delivered a writing workshop to each learning community in turn. Students crafted dramatic, eerie horror stories that were enough to set your teeth on edge.

Calling all Dancers! You are invited to attend a contemporary dance workshop run by Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD). The workshop is free of charge and will take place in school on Monday 8th December 2014 3-5pm (in the Gym). NSCD are a Centre for Advance Training in Dance and run the Yorkshire Young Dancers (YYD) scheme. The YYD and NSCD aims to provide 13-17 year olds access to high quality dance training whilst developing creative potential as dancers. The workshop at Ilkley Grammar School offers an opportunity for students to experience contemporary dance and to consider if the YYD scheme would be suitable for them. A dance artist from NSCD will deliver a 2 hour workshop based on contemporary technique and choreography. This workshop also acts as a preliminary audition onto the YYD scheme. If you would like to take part then please see me for a letter which needs to be signed and returned by parents/carers. The deadline to confirm a workshop place is 27th November. Miss Watson

Othello at the Carriageworks Our all female cast of Othello performed at The Carriageworks Theatre in Leeds on the 18th October. It was a full day with a technical rehearsal on the stage in the morning, during which KS3 students Dominic Fisher and Lewis Hunter worked well together to get the cues right and check that the technical elements enhanced the performance. Our performance was well received and it was lovely to see the girls working so strongly together as an ensemble. They made the story clear and built great tension. At the end of the evening the presenter praised the group’s hard work and evocative story telling. Now the girls are using their experience and understanding of the text to discuss race and gender within Shakespeare. The research project ‘Othello can be white, Romeo can be a girl! is co-ordinated by novelist Delia Jarrett-Macauley and linked to Warwick University. Well done to all the cast involved: Othello (Melissa Johns), Iago (Jessica Toseland), Desdemona (Lucy Millington), Cassio (Rebekah Gray), Roderigo (Ellie Dennis) Brabantio (Alice Rich), Duke (Hannah Wellock), Lodovico (Charlotte Simpson), Montano (Anna Morris), Emilia (Hannah Riley), Bianca (Lucy Hunter-Rowe), 1st Senator (Ellie Tolan) and 2nd Gentleman (Alex Johnson)

Well done to Daniel Burgess (8PB) who has been selected as one of the cast of Matthew Bourne's Lord of the Flies, which is on at the Bradford Alhambra from 3-6 December. The company will unite a cast of remarkable young talent from West Yorkshire in an extraordinary adaptation of William Golding's classic novel, Lord of the Flies choreographed by Olivier nominated Scott Ambler.

Daniel has danced his way through several rounds of auditions, and his final audition on November 1st secured his place in the production. Daniel recently appeared in Ilkley Operatics ‘Bugsy Malone’, and has also starred in Year 8s production of ‘Gangs and Gals’. It is an incredible opportunity to perform with a professional company...good luck Daniel!

Congratulations to our first Khan Academy Maths Competition winners: Nathan Dinsdale (9GPS), Alex Harris (8SL), Ioni Kinley (7PO), Mackenzie Shearn-Miller (10JLF) and Alice Rich (10SMD). Interested in getting involved? Class codes to enter are: Year 7: WCHAC8 Year 8: YY26K2

Well done to Emma Powell (9JP) who has been amazing the climbing world again with her climbing success. Emma competed in the Scottish Mixed Masters event at Ice Factor in Kinlochleven at the weekend. The women climbers (the category that Emma now competes in even though she is only 13) comprised of 15 routes in total: 3 boulder, 3 top rope, 5 auto belay and 4 in the ice.

The winner of the women’s competition was Anna Wells, of Dundee, with Emma beating 10 other women to second place, including well known Scottish climber Fiona Murray. The event involved scaling a 40ft mixed route of ice and rock using dry tooling equipment, which mimics the skills used for mixed climbing in winter by using ice axes on resin holds in the climbing wall. Emma’s next competition is on Saturday 8th November in Glasgow for another round of the British tooling series. Good luck Emma!

Congratulations to our Year 8 rugby team who came out on top against Bingley Grammar School on Wednesday. The final score finished IGS 45-14 Bingley.

Well done to Victoria Hepworth and Charlotte Whitaker-Pitts who are competed in the district round of the National rotary cooking competition at Craven College on Thursday evening.

Well played to our Year 9 girls’ football team who got their 2014-15 campaign underway on Tuesday with an emphatic win against Oakbank, winning comfortably 6-1. After a 10 minute master class warm up by Mr Carr the team were fired up for the game.

Sophie Armitage (9JB) opened the scoring after 2 minutes and IGS controlled the game from there on with Sophie eventually ending the game with her first hatrick for the school team. Nisha Cant (9HM) finished two excellent powerful shots after practising them before the game and Holly Limon (9ALC) got herself on to the scoresheet after calmly placing a penalty into the back of the net.

IGS also played Beckfoot and drew 0-0. A fine display of goalkeeping by Beckfoot denied the girls their second win in a row.

All of the girls are in action for Ilkley Juniors at the weekend against top of the league Farsley Celtic and if they play like Tuesday they will be in for a good game!

Splendid Performance and Workshop Our Theatre Studies students from Key Stage 4 and 5 were joined by students from Horsforth School to watch a performance of ‘Woyzeck’ and took part in a workshop with ‘Splendid Productions’ on Wednesday 22nd October. The Brechtian performance of Georg Buchner’s play challenged and engaged the students. After the performance the students spoke enthusiastically about the experience, praising the company’s style and approach which inspired them. They commented that the use of simple sound effects was so effective and they loved the use of episodes to structure a performance. In the afternoon the GCSE Drama students were involved in a workshop exploring Brecht’s theatre. It was a packed two hour session where the students were pushed to think quickly and develop their devising skills. Key Stage 4 and 5 students will be using what they learned to inform their devising and written work as part of their exam courses.

patterns Chunking

What is it?

Thinking, understanding and connecting the things you are trying to learn to your existing ideas and knowledge.

What to do?

You have listed keywords, made mnemonics, constructed mind maps.

Now you must consider how the information can be used to answer exam questions. E.g. a Sankey diagram shows relative proportions of energy transfers.

Handy hint:

Ask yourself …. “What have I just learned?”

“How could I use it to answer an exam ques-tion.”
