PREFACE RESEARCHING THE MAUDLIN FAMILY By Orpha Maudlin While searching during the past few years, I found a few things which may be of interest to those who bear the name Maudlin, and to those who are related. The Maudlins were originally French Hugenots, driven from France to England by persecution. The struggle between Catholics and Protestants (Hugenots) occurred from 1547-1559, during the reign of Henry the Second of France. Apparently, the Maudlins lived in the Northern District, as the people who now live there are predominantly of the tall, fair-haired, blue-eyed type; obviously related to the Scandinavians and Teutons, who long ago made that part of France their home. Whereas "maudlin", as a girl's name (Little Maud) was frequently used in England in the 16th Century; it derives, as does the family name, from the Anglo-French pronunciation of Magdelene as Maudlin. Magdelene College in England is still pronounced Maudlin. The English word, maudlin, originally derived as an adjective; from Mary Magdalene's prodigality, in using valuable unguents to bathe Christ's feet. Its other meanings have been derived therefrom. Our uncle, Caleb Maudlin, (8th generation) objected to the connotation of drunkenness, and changed the spelling to Mauldin. Ezekiel the 1st came from England and settled in what is now known as North Carolina. I have not been able to find in which year he immigrated. According to records, he was born about 1669. Other records show that he wed Hannah Nicholson of Perquimans County, North Carolina in 1693. This county is situated on the Albemarle Sound of the Atlantic Ocean. Records of births, marriages, wills and land transfers, indicate the family lived in North Carolina for more than a century. PREFACE

RESEARCHING THE MAUDLIN FAMILY

By Orpha Maudlin

While searching during the past few years, I found a few things whichmay be of interest to those who bear the name Maudlin, and to those whoare related.

The Maudlins were originally French Hugenots, driven from France toEngland by persecution. The struggle between Catholics and Protestants(Hugenots) occurred from 1547-1559, during the reign of Henry the Secondof France. Apparently, the Maudlins lived in the Northern District, asthe people who now live there are predominantly of the tall, fair-haired,blue-eyed type; obviously related to the Scandinavians and Teutons, wholong ago made that part of France their home.

Whereas "maudlin", as a girl's name (Little Maud) was frequently usedin England in the 16th Century; it derives, as does the family name, fromthe Anglo-French pronunciation of Magdelene as Maudlin. MagdeleneCollege in England is still pronounced Maudlin. The English word, maudlin, originally derived as an adjective; from Mary Magdalene'sprodigality, in using valuable unguents to bathe Christ's feet. Itsother meanings have been derived therefrom.

Our uncle, Caleb Maudlin, (8th generation) objected to the connotationof drunkenness, and changed the spelling to Mauldin. War Cartoonist,Bill Mauldin's family descended from Ezekiel the 1st, and his wife,Hannah. This has been researched. Bill Mauldin did or does live inKansas City, Missouri.

Ezekiel the 1st came from England and settled in what is now known asNorth Carolina. I have not been able to find in which year he immigrated.According to records, he was born about 1669. Other records show thathe wed Hannah Nicholson of Perquimans County, North Carolina in 1693.This county is situated on the Albemarle Sound of the Atlantic Ocean.Records of births, marriages, wills and land transfers, indicate thefamily lived in North Carolina for more than a century. I would haveliked to travel to North Carolina collecting records of the family, butcould not afford to do so. We traveled to Montana, South Dakota, Nevada, and twice to Salt Lake City, Utah in search of Maudlin family records. In the early 1800's, some of the Maudlins moved to Indiana to make theirhomes. During the next few years, some migrated to Iowa. From there, some moved to Montana, Texas, California, South Dakota, Oregon, andprobably many other states.

l.iiciiula Miiiidliii wud l.awKon Hn 1 I i l.li in WesL Branch, Iowa.

In February, 1876, they moved from Iowa to Indiana Colony, close towliat is now Pasadena, California. Among their children, were two sons;Henry and Arthur. Henry became the first Postmaster of Pasadena on

■wdeptember 21, 1876. After serving three years, he retired from theposition to become a jeweler. His brother, Artluir, was appointed Postmaster on June 18, 1879; but soon tired of tliis occupation and resignedin April, 1880. The Hollingswortlis, Vores, and Giddings were influentialin the development of Pasadena. Jennie Hollingsworth (8th generation)Giddings (born 1858) wrote a book entitled, I Can Remember EarlyPasadena. This book was published wlien Jennie was in her 92nd year.

Lloyd (9th generation) Maudlin (born 1881), son of Lawson (8th generation) and Drusilla Maudlin, was app«tinted first Postmaster for the townt)f Maudlin, Montana, wlilch had been named for him. He served in thatcapacity from 1916 to 1926, when he apparently left the community. After that time, the mail was sent to Angela, Montana. There are nolonger any buildijigs on the site of Maudlin, Montana, which was still

-^on the map until one or two years ago. It was situated in Rosebud(loiinty, which is in Che eastern-central part of Montana, about 25 mitesnorth of Miles City.

Lloyd's parents lived near there on a ranch, his mother caring forLloyd's children, as he and his wife had separated. One day, in 1920,Lloyd's father, Lawson, and Lloyd's son, (Lawson), were in the fieldand were both electrocuted. They somehow came In contact with anelectric wire, wliich was alongside the railroad crack that ran nearby.

Dave and 1 went to the Courthouse in Miles City, and found a bookthat had the names of the first Postmasters and where they served. Weobtained a copy showing Lloyd was appointed Postmaster of Maudlin,Montana. We also had a copy made showing where he had purchased landin 1915.

On July 23rd, 1902, Mactle, wife of David (8th generation) Maudlin, accompanied by her children, (Bertha, David, Melvin, Ruth, and Walter)traveled by team and wagon to Caster, South Dakota. The eldest daughter,Mary, and her husband, Frank Harris were already residing in Custer.Rachel, another daughter, was teaching school in Utah and didn't accompanyLhem on tlie journey, coming to Custer later. The trip took until thefirst part of September. A diary was kept by Ruth Maudlin during CheJourney until they were within 100 miles of their destination. Shealso itemized each ptirchase that was made as dlioy traveled, includinggroceries, hardware, and horse feed. They spent about $55.00, and thejourney was 572 miles. I wish I could include this diary so all of youcould read it, but chat is impossible. I made a copy of it, so if any-

, one would like to have one, I have it available.

Five years (1907) after their . -rival in Cuscer, Mantle (Dave'sgrandmother) Maudlin homesteaded i id proved up on property northwestof Glister. The final deed was sii led by President Woodrow Wilson onMarch 27, 1917. She raised her fiaily there, and lived there untilher death on August 10, 19A1, at . le age of 93 years, 7 months, and26 days.

In September, 1979, we visited lany members of the family in Wyominand South Dakota. We learned from them that David Maudlin (Dave'sgrandfather) stayed in Utah when his wife, Mattie, and their childrenwent to Glister, South Dakota. He ;penc his remaining years working inmines In Utah and Nevada. He pass-d away In Pioche, Nevada, in 1911.There is an article about lils death in this booklet. His son, David*T. Maudlin, went to Pioche, Nevada, to pick up his father's personalthings. At that time, David T, and his wife. Prudence with their famiwere living in Lolo, Montana, which is close to Missoula.

1 mentioned previously that we visited Guster, South Dakota inSeptember, 1979. Dave (10th generi tion) met many relatives he hadnever seen. We went to Upton, Wyoring, where two of his aunts arehuiied. While in Upton, we met mai y of his second and third cousins. We were treated very graciously. 1 2 went on to Newcastle, Wyoming, where we visited two of Dave's fin: cousins and their husbands. Leavthere, we crossed a mountain, and .ater that day, we arrived in GusterSouth Dakota, which was our origini I destination. There we stayed atGrandma Mattie's homestead, as an mt is still living there and nowowns the place. She is Alvina Mau in. Uncle Walter's widow.

Dave iias two first cousins also -esiding in Guster and a firstcousin, Harold Maudlin, in Hill City, South Dakota, which is close toMt, Rushniore. We visited Mt. Riishrr ire, also some of the grave sitesof Dave's relatives; among them his grandma's. We had a wonderful ciglor nine days in Guster, and hated i leave everyone.

This gcneology report ends Marcl 1, 1980. There had to be a finalcut-off date. Those of the 12tli gt eration, who will have more childnwill find extra spaces, which can 1 filled in.

One of the disappointments I enc untered was in not being able tofind a copy of the Maudlin Crest, o Go.it of Arms, I searched for man>hours in various libraries. Record about the crest may be in FranceKnglaiul, or Nortli Carolina. Wlthou a doubt, it was inherited by somemember of the family. The last men ion of it was when Hannah left itto her son, Exekiel Jr. after the d. ith of her husband, Ezekiel, 1. inNorth Carolina.

I do not pretend to be an author, and wanted to preface thisV,^ieneology, so that it might be more understandable to you. It is now

ns complete as possible .after three years, tliree trips to various stales,au<l ten thousaiul miles. I hope y«ui en j<»y this "litl le booklel" as iiineiias I enjoy being able to bring it to yon.

We had many memorable times, visiting relatives and places, whichwe would never have had without our wanting to know more about "TheMaudlins"; which is what it is all about.

OUR MAUDLIN ^IILY IN AMERICA

This article was obtained

the descendants of Mark Ma

(our ancestor). Many of t

live in the southwestern preceived by Dr. Charles F.Maudlin, who had this info

com Mrs. Shelby Beaucamp, one ofllln, brother of Benjamin Maudlin2 descendants of Mark Maudlin

rt of Missouri. This data was

y'oyles from his uncle, Nathan B.nation in an Atlas.

First Generation

Ezekiel Maudlin came i rom England and settled in whatIs now known as North CaroJina. Records show he wed Han

nah Nicholson of Perquimanf Co., N. C. in 1693. Tlie Maudlins were originally French Hugenots (Christians) drivento England by persecution and thence to America. Recordsalso show Ezekiel owned land and left an estate, of which

Hannah was named Administratrix.

Ezekiel and Hannah had five children; Edward, EzekielJr., Mary, Elizabeth, and S irah.

According to the English law prevailing in the colonies at that time, Edward inherited the land and Ezekiel,Jr. inherited a Coat of Am 5, suggesting that this familywas of more than ordinary i nportance.

Four years after the c-jath of Ezekiel, which occurredMarch 16, 1706, Hannah rema-ried to a man named Davis. They had a daughter named / m, as indicated in Hannah'swi 1 1.

Sometime after the dea h of Davis, Hannah marriedSamuel Charles and another laughter, Hannah Jr., wasburn December 5, 1723. Haniah's third husband, Charles, died ill 1728. Hannah rema i ed a widow until her death

in I7'j2. She left an estai disposed of by her will. There is presumptive < idence that Ezekiel came from

the London area, as indicai d by the fact that later therewere Maudlins in London wii the same given name. HannahMaudlin Cliarles made no moi ion in her will of any descendants of her son Ezekiel, J ., who died twenty years priorto licr deatii. Tliere is a ^ udlin Street in London, England.

Second Generation

Edward Maudlin, eldest son of Ezeklel and Hannah, wedMary Nicholson (no relation to Hannah, above). Their children were Ezeklel, Edward, John, Uilliam, Gideon, Joseph,Mary, an un-named daughter, and Huldah. Ezeklel, whom youwill observe is our ancestor, was presumably named for hisGrandfather, the pioneer from England. This Ezeklel diedon July 10, 1745.

Third Generation

Ezeklel Maudlin, son of Edward and Mary, wed Mary Hall.Records show they had at least three children, Edmund, Elizabeth, and Sarah. Edmund, the eldest, was born April 7, 1735.

Fourth Generation

/ • ■

Edmund Maudlin, son of Edward and Mary, wed Sarah Per-risho (French). Their eldest son, Mark, was born in 1766.He wed Esther Worell. Edmund also had a son, Benjamin,(our ancestor), born October 12, 1771. Benjamin wed LeahCopeland in 1795. Edmund, as you can see, was the fourthgeneration of our direct line in North Carolina, and hewas the last who died there.

rilR hlNCOl.N COUNTY KRCOKI)

Piocliii, Nevada list. 1870

Weekly Publication Published July 1911

A well known citizen of Pioche was called to the other side thisweek; David Maudlin, an old time mining man of Utah and Nevada. Hewas a member of the Odd Fellows fraternity. The funeral was heldfrom the Odd Fellows Hall last Wednesday. During the hour of the Obsequies, business was generally suspended that due homage might bepaid to the memory of this pioneer, who numbered his friends in thehundreds.

The late Mr. Maudlin was engaged in mining in Beaver (Utah) manyyears. He was there when the Horn Silver mine at Frisco (near Beaver,Utah) was regarded as one of the most valuable mines in the West.Soon after A. B. Lewis organized the Majestic Copper Company to operate property near Millard. Mr. Maudlin was placed as Superintendent. On leaving the Majestic he came to Nevada and became active at Freburgand other mining camps in the Western part of the county.

Something over a year ago he was stricken with pneumonia and fordays his life was dispared of; while he survived the attack, he wasnever a well man afterwards. His advanced age went against him andduring the past year his friends could notice a gradual decline untilhis sufferings came to an end. He is survived by several children.

(In February 22, 1978 Dave (grandson of the above) Maudlin and hiswife Orpha took a trip to Pioche, Nevada. We found the above storvand also were able to obtain a copy of his death certificate. Wealso found and visited his grave site. There is no marker, but theOdd Fellows Lodge has a map of the grave sites.)
