• NOTE: 5G is NOT a solution to the in-building voice problem, however we will be discussing the impact as a compliment to other technologies in a building.

CELLULAR/ 5G –IN-BUILDING

PROBLEMS

• Poor cell coverage in multifamily properties can result in loss revenue, unhappy residents and reduced loyalty

• Building materials, like Low-E glass, block cellular signal from penetrating buildings

• Seamless roaming is an issue – individual in-apartment solutions do not equate to an in-building voice solution

• Areas like corridors and garages require adequate voice coverage for resident safety

• Residents ARE checking coverage before leasing an apartment

• More than 80% of mobile traffic originates or is destined inside of a building

WHAT’S NEW?

Cellular: 5G vs. 4G

• Will use mmWave technology (28 Ghz spectrum) in conjunction with mid band frequencies (2-6 Ghz).

• 10 times the speed with data rates up to 10 Gbps

• Less than half the latency

• 200 times the device counts using all frequencies

• Very short transmission distances

• Very limited penetration into LEED certified buildings.

IMPLICATIONS

Cellular Implications

• Smaller cells with smaller coverage areas

• Shorter coverage distances

• Geared for IoT in which faster response times are required (think driverless cars, remote surgery)

• If 4G doesn’t penetrate the building, 5G will be worse, especially for the upper frequency bands

• Potential for small cell placement inside buildings to offer services

• IoT security concerns

5G TODAY

• Requires a 5G enabled device. Very limited inventory right now –no Apple devices expected in the near future.

• T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon have begun to launch their 5G networks in limited municipalities. Initial testing ranges from very poor and inconsistent service to super-fast speeds when standing in very close range of a node using mmWave technology, with little change in speeds or performance in existing frequency bands.

• True 5G is still years away and will be a very slow roll out.

• In the race to 5G, cellular carriers are using misleading branding to have customers think they are on 5G. Example: AT&T “5G E” which operates on its 4G LTE network and is NOT 5G.

5G TODAY

• The Good News: • Better speeds 40-1000% than 4G LTE

• More connected devices – better for handling heavy IoT

• Better seamless handoff with Wi-Fi

• The Bad News:• Questionable security

• Lack of range

• Poor building penetration, predicted to be worse than 4G LTE

• New Protocol – OFDMA – solves the interference issue in dense device environments

• Added features increases the device capacity within a given access point range

• New feature reduces battery usage of connected devices

• Allocation of an additional 1 Ghz of spectrum in the 6 Ghz band

• The new protocol combined with new features effectively offers 92 dedicated device connections at 14 Mbps from each access point, thus eliminating interference and congestion.

• Wi-Fi connected IoT devices will have much longer battery life.

• With the addition of the 6 Ghz band the amount of frequency spectrum available for Wi-Fi in each building is ten times greater than the spectrum available to most cellular providers in a large city thus providing much greater speed and capacity.

WIFI IMPLICATIONS

• IDC projects WiFi 6 chipsets will grow 10 X between 2019 and 2023

• Because of the added speed and capacity, offers more choice to residents.

WIFI IMPLICATIONS

• Both WiFi6 and 5G are being built to compliment each other

• Multipath TCP – Devices always connected to BOTH networks

• Better handoff from cellular to WiFi and back

• With HotSpot2.0 no reauthentication required

• WiFi6 will continue to act as the data offload for cellular with faster speeds and lower latency

WIFI6 FOR VOICE

DISTRIBUTED ANTENNA SYSTEMS

(DAS)

• Traditional DAS• Most expensive solution

• Requires power at the antennas increasing cost

• Requires Base Station Transceiver

• Turns building into a “mini cell site”

• Hybrid DAS• Does not require power – uses copper resulting in

significantly reduced cost

• Donor antenna at the roof top

TRADITIONAL DAS

• Most expensive voice solution• Requires power at the antennas increasing cost• Effectively creates a “mini cell site” – does not depend on existing coverage• Requires cooperation and approval from individual cellular carriers• Ideal for stadiums and arenas or areas where there is no outdoor coverage

• Does not require power at the antennas – utilizes copper• Requires existing outdoor coverage• Does not require the approval of cellular carriers – carrier agnostic• Ideal for multifamily, commercial and mixed-use properties where there is

HYBRID DAS (AKA CELLBOOST)

CBRS OR ONGO– CITIZEN BAND RADIO SERVICES

• Utilizes 3.5 Ghz frequency band (in between cellular and WiFi)

• Offers 4G/LTE coding structure on a WiFi like network topology

• Partial licensed and unlicensed thus reducing the possibility of interference

• Private networks available, managed through the “cloud”, and public neutral host networks will be available sometime in late 2020.

• Once neutral host networks are available, the service will be transparent to users with CBRS/LTE phones.

• Requires smartphones with 3.5 Ghz frequency.

• Substantial cost reduction compared to Distributed Antenna Systems

CBRS

• Initial deployment 4G/ LTE private network on 3.5 Ghz frequency band

• Neutral host (extension of outside 4G/ LTE) not until mid 2020

• Can be added onto certain Wi-Fi networks or standalone

WHAT’S NEW?

• Because CBRS has its own frequency spectrum, there is only interference from CBRS system to CBRS system, great place to implement building IoT devices

• More expensive than Wi-Fi implementation

• Initial deployments will not solve in building cellular issues

• Once Neutral Host is implemented – significantly less expensive than DAS

• Does not require good outside signal

EMERGENCY RESPONDER

RADIO COVERAGE (ERRC)

• Buildings that have poor cell coverage will also have poor RF coverage.

• Mandates for providing ERRC coverage are done at the local level and can be tricky to navigate.

• ERRC is not provided by cellular or Wi-Fi networks and requires a RadioBoost or similar system for coverage, work with the AHJ, mandate research, certified RF engineers and certification upkeep.

• Only a GROL (General Radio Operator License) engineer can handle your buildings ERRC.

• ERRC requires extensive communication by the GROL engineer with the AHJ, equipment manufactures and various authorities and can take months to design and deploy

• Failure to meet the mandates in your area for ERRC coverage will prevent you from getting your Certificate of Occupancy.

• It is essential that building owners involve Spot On before or during the construction phase to ensure that your building meets coverage requirements and your Certificate of Occupancy is not delayed!

• At the beginning of construction, obtain a preliminary low voltage cabling design from a knowledgeable source.

• Locate Conduit needed in the foundation and between buildings.

• Utilize CAT6 in apartments – need to carry power – not available with fiber

• Have signal testing performed after walls are up and windows are installed.

• Determine services required and implement accordingly.

• Services should be installed at least 60 days prior to occupancy

• Have signal testing performed after new windows are installed.

• Determine services required.

• Depending upon type of services, determine cable pathway requirements using a low voltage knowledgeable source.

• Determine if corridor ceilings, moldings, etc. can be used for cabling.

• In the event of an occupied building, infrastructure should be installed first to mitigate resident interruption.

• By 2020, Wi-Fi will be the primary method of voice communications surpass both VoLTE and VoIP with over 50% of voice calls happening over Wi-Fi.

• By 2022 smartphone will account for 44% of data traffic, PCs will account for 19%. Today smartphones account for only 18% of data traffic.

• Data traffic from Wi-Fi and mobile devices will account for 71% of all data traffic by 2022.
