Comfortable Drama. Cozy sophistication.

We’ve given black and white an oh-so-cozy edge with the help of a fabulous collection of chic, yet comfortable fabrics.

• every little thing: From hip zebra print coats, to sweet camouflage caplets (Simplicity pattern #4434), fleecy fashion is great for the shorter set. The pants, hat, and beret are sewn from Simplicity pattern #2745. And if fuzzy hats and cozy mittens are more to your little one’s liking, make the set pictured from McCall’s pattern #5539. modern grace

Drama doesn’t have to be formal. Sophistication doesn’t have to be reserved. Make a black and

white color palette come to life mixing soft fabrics, unexpected prints, and plenty of playful accessories.

the right lightCan’t find the perfect accent lamp for your black

and white retreat? Just revamp, restyle, and revitalize! We recovered an everyday shade in a classic print—or you can start from scratch using one of our self-adhesive lampshade kits. For the other lamp, we went for a quick tweak,

simply replacing the piece’s existing center sash with layers of velvet and houndstooth, then

re-secured the original buckle.

modern artNow it’s time to turn your attention to the

walls! This metal wall hanging was headed for a yard sale before we altered it to match the rest of the décor. Covered in our hip fabrics (adhered with ordinary decoupage glue), the piece became fabulous custom art—so much

so, we just had to make another one!

top drawer designNot content with a plain black dresser,

we used decoupage glue to adhere panels of fabric directly to the fronts of the doors and drawers...keeping to one pattern for a clean and simple look. For the perfect finishing touch, we

replaced the plain wooden knobs with a set of fun designer knobs available

in the Home Accent Dept.

split personalityThis posh pillow gets double points for its smart use of contrasting yet coordinating prints. We used Simplicity pattern #4108 as a guide, and added sleek style with a

strip of black velvet and a rhinestone buckle.

black and whiteThis unsung color scheme is modern and

sophisticated, and anything but touch-me-not. With cushy velvet and adventurous animal

prints, our urban suite is truly as comfortable as it is chic. The duvet, shams, and bed skirt were all sewn using McCall’s pattern #6291.

a black tie affairEmbellish a set of store-bought linens to complement your carefully decorated space. For this look, make a row of buttonholes along the top edge of the sheet. Then weave

through a length of luxurious velvet ribbon and tie a pretty bow, as shown.

make way for appliquéBold and breathtaking, these scroll appliqués

aren’t as complicated as they look. Simply trace a design from stencils, scrapbook

paper, or clip art onto a contrasting fabric (we used a gorgeous white satin). Apply fusible web (following manufacturer’s

instructions) to the wrong-side of fabric. Fuse design to fabric and finish edge of

appliqué using a basic zig-zag stitch.

animal attractionAnimal print textiles can bring a modern

edge to any space. We went for a hip zebra stripe for our chic urban duvet and canopy. The fabulous pillow was made using Simplicity pattern #5685, and features dramatic black velvet and

a beaded tassel tieback.

designer headboardNeed a quick dress-up for a lackluster headboard? Think outside the box with these beautiful

rhinestone hair accessories turned decorative faux buttons ( these hair accessories are available in the Wedding Dept.). We simply used wire cutters to clip off the pin leaving the gorgeous rhinestone

bauble...or button. Then used hot glue to secure button directly to headboard. Mirroring the look of a high-end suite, it’s rich in designer style, but easy on the budget!
