Red Rocks Park-Naturai n'onders - At an Elevation of 6,200 feet above sea levet, Red Rocks park is in aunique transitional zone where the Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains. This diverseenvironment allows the visitor to see plants, birds and animals ilr ootn regions.

Birds - Red Rocks is home to an array of feathered inhabitants. Birds such as house finches,scrub jays, pigeons and magpies are often spotted in Red Rocks Park. ln the winter months,golden crowned sparrows and rosy finches also attract bird watchers to the park.

On occasion, the American kestrel is seen hovering over the park. This bird is a falcon thatfeeds on large insects, small birds and rodents. Both male and female American kestrels havea blue-gray stripe on its head and dark sideburns.

Another bird seen in Red Rocks is the mountain blue bird. This bird is in the North American thrush family. These birdssing a lovely song. Mountain blue birds can be identified by their thin bill, stocky body and forked tait. Males are a softpeacock blue, and females are grayish blue.

Trails-The Trading Post loop.hiking trail is 1.4 miles in length, and goes through spectacular rock formations, valeysand a natural meadow. Some of the terrain is rough, so hiking boots/ ihoes are Lcommended. Also, hikers should be

Historic sites and scenic vistas await park visitors. Castle trail leads from the plains at the east end of the parkto the foothills via a narrow road which once carried Stanley Steamer autos. The trail then branches to exploreforest and meadows and the many points of interest at the trail summits'

HistoryThe story of Mount Falcon is largely the story of John Brisben Walker, who once owned over 4,000 acres of land

in this area. During the early 1900's Walker lived in an elaborate stone house on Mount Falcon while planning

the construction oia summer home for the Presidents of the United States, which was to have been located on

a ridge to the east of his home. Walker's home burned in 1918, and all that remains of this once splendidedifice are the massive stone walls and numerous fireplaces of a unique mountain castle'On this site the crumbling remnants of a broken dream and the views of the plains to the east and mountainsto the west combine to create an inspirational setting. The construction of the Summer White House neverproceeded beyond the laying of the foundation and cornerstone, though thousands of Colorado school childreneach donated 1O cents toward Walker's dream. American involvement in W.W. I, combined with a waning ofWalker's good fortunes, brought an end to this project. From the site of the Summer White House one may lookdown on Red Rocks Park, one of Walker's dreams come true'

John Brisben Walker was a man of many visions. He made fortunes on land speculation in West Virginia and his

purchase of Cosmopolitan Magazine, but other ventures were less successful. Walker's purchase of the Stanleybteamer Company was a losing bet against Henry Ford's internal combustion engine. Although he held vastfortunes at various times in his life, Walker died penniless in 1931 at the age of 83.

These trails lead from the plains at the east end of the park, up the foothills on a narrow road which once

carried Stanley Steamers, and through forests and meadows to the many points of interest at the top'o Eagle Eye Shelter, once the home of a

more recent tenant, provides a panoramicview from Indian Hills, to Evergreen, andMou nt Eva ns.

o Atop Mou nt Fa lcon itself, a woodentower rises to yield intriguing views of theruins, Red Rocks Park, and the plains.

o The west parking area provides an
