Forty-four films. Forty-four incredible achievements. Their subject matter is as eclectic as the cultures and continents they span. They give us 44 new reasons to focus on the theme that unites us all: sustainability.
As the celebrated environmentalist Robert Swan said, ‘The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.’
The scale of the task ahead is both unprecedented and daunting. It requires a change so great it’s hard to know what it will look like. And while many of us try our best to reduce our carbon footprint, it can seem like a losing battle.
But it isn’t. Because change starts with us.
Some of us are fortunate enough to be able to make a difference at work. Being sustainable doesn’t necessarily mean spending money. It means building a green business. At Fastflow, that encompasses everything from our behaviour in the office, to the materials and approach we take to construction.
Our environmental responsibility led me to sponsor these awards, but the relationship has been two way. The films we have watched for a third successive year have encouraged us to do all we can to create more sustainable housing and infrastructure. They have also led to our ceasing to use the word ‘sustainability’. We now say ‘survivability’.
I hope you all enjoy the evening and these fantastic awards. If we take away one thing, I hope it’s this: a desire to build on the important work already being done, and a willingness to make a difference.

This year we’ve challenged Minecrafters to create sustainable worlds, Instagrammers to produce videos about saving water, and vloggers to talk passionately about climate action. We’ve made films about alternative energy and pioneered an
innovative public health initiative in India, using film to bring

Welcome to the fifth tve Global Sustainability Film Awards.
Tonight’s awards event is a special occasion to congratulate those
shortlisted and to celebrate with the winners. It is also an excellent opportunity to see how organisations, big and small, are driving environmental and social change through the
powerful, eloquent and evocative films entered this
year.

No matter how big the star, their first steps on the road to fame were probably precarious and taken with some trepidation.
Brad Pitt, Clint Eastwood and Sylvester Stalone, for example, all started out as extras, putting
in a great deal of work in the background before their talent gained the recognition that it
deserved.
Like them, after 21 years in business, the Fastflow Group knows the value of working hard
behind the scenes, preparing for the opportunity to step into the limelight.
In the early days, we diligently beavered away in the background, maintaining and servicing
infrastructure that is essential for everyday life.
And now, having earned our clients’ trust, we have been given the chance to be centre stage.
The work we do on our customers’ water, energy and affordable housing assets puts us firmly
in the spotlight.
When we install or repair services in the street, or enter someone’s home to repair a leaking
tap, fit a new kitchen, roof or bathroom, we are the public face of our clients.
So we are well aware that we simply cannot afford to fluff our lines. Each of the Group’s
three divisions shares a commitment to the highest standards of customer service, technical
expertise and efficiency.
Every day we help customers with 150,000 homes and over five million square feet of
commercial property to repair and maintain. Excellent water management is provided across
networks serving almost three million people and specialist diversion, repair and maintenance
is carried out on the UK high pressure gas transmission networks.
Playing our part in a sustainable future
Whether it’s as an extra, understudy or the star, we are more than happy to play our part in
ensuring our clients receive recognition for working in a sustainable way, as several have done
recently:
• The National Grid was named Responsible Business of the Year by Business in the
Community, thanks to its commitment to sustainable energy engineering.
• Northumbrian Water Limited received its second Queen’s Award for Enterprise because of
its outstanding performance in delivering sustainable development.
• A2Dominion, one of the UK’s leading housing groups, was presented with a Silver SHIFT
(Sustainable Homes Index For Tomorrow) Award in recognition of the quality of its homes
in a prestigious environmental award scheme.
The Fastflow Group is delighted to have played a role in each of these achievements and we
look forward to helping all of our clients to excel in their field by operating smoothly, efficiently
and with what we now term survivability.
So fundamental is the need to conserve and protect our planet that we cannot survive unless
we take a more serious approach to responsible use of our natural resources.

panel. He is director of
communications for the UN Climate Change Con-vention, UNFCCC, and was the UN spokesperson for the Paris climate conference of 2015 and the Marrakech climate confer-ence in 2016. Before he was communications chief at the UN Environment Programme HQ in Nairobi following 12 years with The Times newspaper. Mr Nut-tall has been involved with tve for over a decade.
Louise Bateman is head of marketing andcommuni-

An experienced communicator and former journalist, she has extensive knowledge of the sustainability and green business agenda, having founded GreenWise Business in 2008. She now advises business on communication and content marketing strategies.
Claudine Blamey is head of s u s t a i n a -bility and stewardship
at the Crown Estate and chair
of the Institute of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability, the UK’s first professional body for corporate responsibility. She has worked in environmental manage-ment and corporate responsibili-ty for companies including British Land and Honda, and she is a board member of Business in the Community.
Rob Benfield is senior lec-turer at the University of West-m i n s te r ’s
highly re-garded BA Tel-
evision Production course. He also teaches television studio directing for the China Media Cen-tre. Rob has 25 years’ experience in broadcast television, including as director and producer at the BBC, series producer at Carlton TV and documentary maker with Channel 4. He has directed more than 100 hours of live television in genres including magazine programming and current affairs.

Eileen Maybin is senior media advisor at the Fairtrade Founda-tion, one of the world’s foremost independent certification bodies. Its FAIRTRADE mark appears on products which meet internation-al Fairtrade standards, helping to raise living standards for more than 1.65 million farmers and workers in 74 developing countries. As jour-nalist and press manager at Chris-tian Aid, Eileen worked on campaigns i nc l ud ing child la-bour, land-mines, and disaster preparedness.
the judgesSimon Evans, head of consultan-cy at Eco-Age, believes that great communications can encourage sustainability. He delivers bespoke sustainability strategies, manage-ment systems and supply-chain solutions for leading brands and companies. His client list includes Chopard, Nestlé, Wembley Stadi-um, and the British Film Institute. Simon holds a masters in environ-mental manage-ment and is a member of the Insti-tute of En-vironmental M a n a g e -ment and Assessment.
An entrepreneur with a successful business by the age of 25, Ryan Brennan has helped to establish one of the largest UK smart grid businesses. Today he is Fastflow Group’s strategic development director, supporting the compa-ny’s growth and diversification. He is also co-founder of Fast-flow’s SMARTflow Energy Servic-es, which helps organisations cut carbon emis-sions, mone-tise assets and use innovative technology for efficient energy consumption.
Victoria Brooks is a sustainabil-ity communications strategist with over 15 years in the advertising industry. In partnership with Sony Europe and Naked, she execu-tive-produced a documentary, The Forest Guards, for the National Ge-ographic channel and originated a digital crowd-sourcing platform, Sony’s Open Planet Ideas, with IDEO and WWF, which won the Guardian Sus-tainable Busi-ness Award for Com-municating Sustainabil-ity. Victoria is currently the director of Strategic Partnerships at The Comms Lab.
We see with each succeeding year of the tve Global Sustainability Film Awards that more companies understand why s u s t a i n a b i l i t y should lie at the heart of all they do. Many companies now recognise the returns they get from taking a long-term approach to social and environmental challenges. They see how urgent it is to align profit-making with securing fundamental planetary assets - water, soils, forests and oceans. If we want to deliver prosperity for all the world’s people, it’s this corporate approach that will help make it happen. The films in this year’s Awards showcase remarkable corporate pioneers.

Leading television production company Free@Last TV is making a one-hour broadcast special of this year’s Awards. Working alongside tve’s longstanding media partner, the University of Westminster, Free@Last TV will produce the Awards show for distribution to broadcasters around
the world. Founded in 2000, Free@Last TV specialises in creative and innovative entertainment and factual programming. It recently co-produced
the high profile ‘Agatha Raisin’ drama series for
Sky One.
Its founders Barry Ryan and David Walton have made prime-time programming for ITV, the BBC, Channel 4, Five and digital channels including Discovery and A&E. This year’s Awards are being filmed by students from the highly regarded television and journalism courses at London’s University of Westminster. As part of their third year BA (Hons) Television Production course, students are involved in all aspects of the production including pre-planning, rigging, filming and post-production. entertainmentThe Feste Trio, a London-based string trio of players who study at the Royal Academy of Music, combines virtuoso classical performances with humour and laughter - a reflection of their namesake Feste, the comedic fool in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Their interactions with each other go far beyond the practice room, making them a very friendly trio. To them it is important for the audience members to feel the warmth in the trio as it makes the whole concert experience an intimate one. Feste members have performed all over Europe, playing a range of music spanning from the Baroque era such as Bach to 20th-century European music like Piazzolla.
