The BALDWIN SOCIETY: Endowment Donors of

The Masonic Charity Foundation of Connecticut

The Baldwin Society is comprised of generous and caring individuals

and organizations that have contributed to The Foundation’s Endowment

Fund. Each member of The Baldwin Society has made one or more gifts,

each in the amount of $10,000 or more to the Endowment Fund over a

twelve-month period. Gifts to the Endowment Fund are held in trust and

are never spent, with only the earnings available to support the

programs, services and facilities of Masonicare and its affiliates.

Members’ gifts have taken many forms, such as life income agreements,

outright gifts, memorial gifts, and confirmed bequests, as well as gifts of

life insurance and retirement plan assets.

Donations to The Masonic Charity Foundation of Connecticut

The Cleaveland Society was established in 2005 in grateful recognition

of the individuals and organizations that have made one or more

unrestricted gifts, each in the amount of $10,000 or more in a twelve-

month period to The Masonic Charity Foundation of Connecticut. These

donations can be used in their entirety to support the healthcare

programs, services and facilities offered by Masonicare and its affiliates.

THE NAMESAKES: Origins of the Baldwinand Cleaveland Societies

Ashbel Baldwin was a founding member of St. Paul’s Lodge No. 11

and an active member of King Solomon’s Lodge No. 7. A graduate of

Yale University, he became the first Grand Chaplain of The Grand

Lodge of Connecticut in 1797. At the Grand Lodge’s first public

procession, Baldwin delivered a lengthy sermon that contained the

first recorded public plea for the establishment of a fund to care for the

needy, laying the groundwork for The Masonic Charity Foundation of

Connecticut and its Endowment Fund.

Raymond E. Baldwin of Rye, New York, served as Governor of

Connecticut from 1939–41 and again from 1943–46, at which point he

resigned to become a U.S. Senator. A member of St. John’s Lodge No.

8 of Stratford, he was awarded the Pierpont Edwards Medal in Bronze

for Distinguished Masonic Service in 1944 and the David Wooster

Medal in Silver in 1979. Today, the Baldwin Bridge at the mouth of

the Connecticut River between Old Lyme and Old Saybrook stands in

his memory.

Moses Cleaveland was Charter Master of Moriah Lodge in Windham,

Connecticut. A lawyer, politician, soldier, and surveyor born in

Canterbury, he founded the city of Cleveland, Ohio in 1796 while

surveying the Western Reserve (territory once claimed by Connecticut

that is now part of northeastern Ohio).
