Councillor Peter Harrand has served Alwoodley for 25 years. “In-Touch” catches up with him for some thoughts in his election year.

What are the biggest changes you have seen in over twenty years on the council?

Undoubtedly, the predictions of the numbers of children in the city.

For several years your Alwoodley Councillors have been doing their best to secure a new state of the art Medical Centre for the area.

Several local doctors’ surgeries operate under the disadvantage of being housed in converted homes, with little or no parking, limited in-house health provision and no attached pharmacy.

There has been a proposal to site a new health centre just north of Sainsbury’s to meet modern requirements.

Neil Buckley told In Touch “We have been grappling with entrenched attitudes and bundles of red tape. We have raised the matter 3 times at Full Council meetings and received a number of promises that it will happen.”

As councillors, we cannot build this health centre but we will continue to do all we can to ensure that those who do make the fi nal decision cannot forget what we need.

Other areas have new state of the art facilities, why can’t we?

The children’s home on Shadwell Lane is to be knocked down, just ten years after it was opened.

There was concern about what would be built, but the most likely development now is for it to become an assisted living building.

The plans suggest that it will be for people over 70, who will own a fl at in the complex and will be able to take advantage of a 24-hour presence of potential assistance on the site. There’s still a long way to go, but fi rst reactions are that this is a sensible use of the site.

Local News Update

Thanks for all the letters and e-mails and conversations in the supermarket about the traffic lights at Alwoodley Gates. We have asked Highways to look at the remarkable priority given to the 10% traffic turning left at the expense of the 90% going across

to Wigton Lane or turning down Harrogate Road, we will keep you informed of

progress!

Also thanks to Harewood Parish Council for finding the money to pay for the new bus

shelter at the High Ash shops. The 48 is not the most prompt bus in Leeds and the

shelter will be much appreciated.

The main pressure for massive new housing estates in our part of Leeds has receded

for now. Thanks to all those who made the case against some of the wilder ideas in the original document. This may have been the

first victorious battle in a long war.

As in a previous attempt by outsiders to change our society fundamentally, we shall fight them on the Buckstones, we shall fight them on the Primleys; we shall fight them on the High Ashes ; we shall never

surrender.

Some time ago Alwoodley Parish Council made an application for Village Green status to be applied to the area of land on King Lane, opposite the shops, by the playground and bordered by Adel Woods. This application was rejected.

This area, now known as Alwoodley Park, was widely used before the War by people escaping the City at weekends for picnics, rambling and fresh air. There was even a café nearby.

Following the Council’s rejection of the application, Neil, Peter and Dan were asked to help, as Alwoodley Ward Councillors. We are delighted to be able to confirm that this land will be now named and signed as “Alwoodley Village Green”.

People have told us that having a piece of land which they can refer to as “The Village Green” gives them a sense of ownership and binds the community together – exactly as it should be.

Alwoodley Village GreenUPDATE

As everyone now knows, Yorkshire has been declared one of the top 3 places to visit – in the World. Quite right too!

This has come about, not only because Alwoodley is located here, but also partly as a result of the great news that the Tour de France “Grand

Depart” will take place in the County and will set off from Leeds on Saturday 5th July this year with a 100 day festival building up to the event itself.

It is difficult to comprehend just how big an event this is. There will be 200 television stations covering all aspects of the occasion and the crowds are forecast to be massive.

In addition to the bikes and riders there will be an enormous “caravan” of associated vehicles stretching 5 or 6 miles.

The route from the City centre will include the A61,so it will travel right through the middle of Alwoodley. The benefits to the city will be immense – more tourism alone means an increase in business opportunities – and jobs.

However because of the sheer scale of the Tour, whole roads will be sealed off to through traffic and we understand that there will be no access on or through the A61 for much of the day (between around 7am to 3pm).

Many residents, homes and buildings will be affected. We will do our very best to keep you fully informed and Peter, Dan and Neil will post updates on www.alwoodleyward.co.uk and on our twitter feed @ALWOODLEYWARD.

Every little helps

Your Alwoodley councillors help in matters that seem too small for national politicians

to be bothered with but are what voters should expect of their local representatives.

More bins and Grit Bins for Alwoodley job done

One-way system through the narrow section of Nursery Lane near Harrogate Road

job done.

A tidy up of the messy little roads between King Lane and the Buck Stones

job done.

New grass verges on the Sandringhams job done

Allotments in the Aldertonscoming this summer

Programme of Road Maintenance across the ward

done and constantly being reviewed

Your Councillors work hard to ensure that any litter in Alwoodley is dealt with as quickly as possible.

To that end we are in the process of drawing up a list of 10 litter hotspots in the ward to receive special and regular attention from the litter locality team of Leeds City Council.

Neil, Peter and Dan do have a few areas in mind already (such as around the bottle bank next to the Moor Allerton Library and parts of Stairfoot Lane).

We would like your thoughts as to spots to put on our action list—please give us a call, or drop us an email (numbers and address shown overleaf)

Doing a good job with Rubbish

A major challenge facing Leeds over the next ten years is where to house the thousands of people who will be living here.

A prosperous and welcoming city will always be under pressure to fi nd accommodation for those who want to live here.

This has been going on for 200 years but we now have the extra dimension of a rapid increase in the

health of the population. We live longer than any of the generations before us. This positive trend will continue. Baby girls born this year have a one in three chance of living to be a 100.

Over the next fi fteen years Leeds needs, 70,000 new houses or fl ats. Councillors’ job is to make sure that these are spread sensibly across the city.

The plans so far are not too hard on Alwoodley but we shall be watching closely as they gradually turn into planning applications. To see the plans in detail look online at:

Careful Building for the future

Your local Conservative Councillors provided funding to allow 2 road improvement schemes to go ahead.

Two short access roads from King Lane into the Buck Stones had deteriorated over recent years, with potholes appearing and the grass on both sides becoming eroded by parked cars.

The tarmac area has now been widened to provide more parking and improvements have been made to the grassed areas.

Cllr Dan Cohen said “People living nearby have been calling for action on this for a long time and the enhancements make a big difference to the

area. It is important we aim to improve residential roads like these where we can fi nd the funding.”

On the Sandringham Estate, residents had to put up with rutted and muddy verges outside their homes. These houses were built with narrow streets leaving little choice but to park on the grass.

Cllr Peter Harrand explained “We were delighted to secure the funding to replace the grass with a new and attractive hard standing material.”

The result has been spectacular. Chairman of the residents’ association, Morton Phillips, said “I am delighted to report that eight verges, which were all in a shocking condition, have been repaired as opposed to the four Highways were originally proposing to deal with. Residents will be able to park cars and negotiate the Crescent much more easily from now on.”
