In addition to be an award winning new winter sports product, North Legion SMX is also the ultimate winter alternative for bmx, fmx and mtb riders. Over the two seasons the SMX has been on the market it has proven to be a quality prod-uct that has been embraced by the most profiled sport trendset-ters in the world. The sport is well on its way to achieve the same status for bike riders as the snow-board has for skateboarders and surfers.

Since the product was officially launched two seasons ago it has already been awarded as the best new sports product at ISPO BrandNew Awards and nominat-ed for Honours Award for Design Excellence by The Norwegian De-sign Council.

SMX is perfect for experi-enced bike riders, but more importantly, it is perfect for beginners. The SMX is easy to handle and the learning curve is substantially steeper compared with snowboard-ing and downhill skiing. The ease of use is one of the main reasons for why the activity has become a popu-lar rental activity in ski re-sorts. Tourists can pick up an SMX and have fun from the first time they ride down the slope. This makes the sport an activity for practically ev-eryone but the potential for developing personal skills is endless!

The patented carving system makes it possible to angle the SMX up to 45 degrees. The movement in the paral-lel motion frame simulates a downhill skier and has proven to work extremely well. The steel edges on three carv-ing skies are all on an angle while turning and this gives an impressing good grip even on hard and icy surface. SMX riders can easily perform per-fect carving turns in challeng-ing and easy slopes, both in low and high speed.

North Legion has always had in mind that the SMX should be a versatile piece of equip-ment with the ability to per-form to the limits both in the slopes and off-pist. With the standard set up it is certainly designed for slope riding but we are all using it in fresh powder up to 10 – 15 cm as well. It does not handle well in more snow that that with the current set up. That be-ing said we are well in the process of testing special designed powders skies that can handle as much powder as you can trace down. This is aimed to hit the pre sales market in January 2009.

Before we initiated the product development process, we made an extensive list of functions we believed would be necessary for the SMX to achieve the same status with bike riders as the snowboard has with surfers and skateboarders. The following pages contain the most vital functions from this list, and explain how these functions actually work and why the Merc has become one of the most innovative sport products in the world.Nearly all the functions on the North Legion SMX make it stand out from any other known product. setupThe 3-ski-design gives enormous stability, and testing has revealed that the North Legion SMX needs shorter distance to make a full stop compared with snowboard at various speeds. With an SMX, you stop the same way you do with alpine skis – and as effective.

If the rider looses control going down the slope, the emergency stop function will be activated which ensures that the SMX won’t become a potential hazard on the slope. The emergency stop function releases one of the rubber bands

The Merc is equipped with front suspension from Marzocchi and rear suspension from DNM. All front and rear shocks used by North Legion have proved to work well in low temperatures and exposed to snow over longer periods of time.

The SMX has been designed to allow for all type of mountain bike and bmx tricks. You can cruise down the slope and practice manuals, bunnyhops, 180s, switch riding (backwards) or barspins, or you can make use of the full suspension system and get your adrenalin rushing.

With full suspension and the stability of the 3-ski-design you can really go hard on big jumps and in the halfpipe. Foot pegs attached to the parallel motion frame makes it possible to control the SMX in the air and makes it possible to pull tricks when standing.

The SMX’s frame design and a lift transportation device make transport in different types of ski lifts safer and more convenient than with any existing snowbike, sledge or snowracer. It’s easy to handle without removing your gloves on cold days.

The Parallel Motion Frame allows for perfect carving-turns – both in standing and sitting position.

The 3-ski-design provides optimal control when landing jumps, and also allows for fakie (riding backwards) entries and landings. It also makes SMX very easy to learn for beginners.

The lift bag features easy and safe transport in all types of ski lifts. Our lift transportation device is designed to automatically release from the lift if the rider falls off.

Full suspension gives optimal control at any speed and pro-tects the frame as well as your body when dropping off cliffs.

The frame is designed to allow for easy transportation in Chair lifts.

The emergency stop function provides security for the rider and bystanders.

SMX facilitates execution of any bicycle/fmx tricks in the slopes, on big-jumps and in the halfpipe.

The SMX is easy to fold and the skis can easily be removed for transportation.

North Legion SMX is the perfect tool for ski resorts to attract new users to the slopes during winter. It is already evident that mountainbikers, bmx and motocross riders are getting into SMX which clearly provide a perfect winter alternative for them.

For ski resorts, which already have bike parks in summer, SMX can be used as a vehicle to market bike activities during peak season. SMX provides a new and exiting activity for skiers and snowboard-ers and as SMX provides an easy and safe entry level into mountainbiking, it will be likely to generate more traffic dur-ing the mountainbike season.

North Legion SMX is also ideal for rental and ski-school courses as it is easy to learn for beginners. Feedback from test centers so far clearly states that SMX is easier to learn than alpine skiing or snowboarding.

It is important to understand the target group in order to make a decision to stock North Legion SMX. Although the product can be used to support a certain store’s image as innovative, it is cer-tainly more to the SMX than this. North Legion is targeting a high volume market where the ongoing mountain bike boom is the center of our attention. Increasing numbers of ski resorts are investing into bike parks to keep their lifts running dur-ing the summer. This trend has led to a new bike style and a new popular sport, which is known to be the largest grow-ing individual action sports in the world. North Legion will continue to work hard with developing the sport with this in mind and put on major slopestyle con-tests like the Adidas Winter Slopestyle and various other events, which will help build the market and the demand for SMXs. The target group includes mountain bik-ers, snowboarder, skiers, motor cross riders, and the general public who wants to try something new. It may seem like you need to be a skilled athlete to take the SMX to the slopes but this could not be further from the truth. It is easy to learn the basics but the possibilities to further develop skills are endless like it is with bikes.

North Legion has established a kick ass test team which includes several of the best freeride mountain bikers in the world, a couple of big mountain skiers and a few bmx and fmx riders. Having a team of this calibre makes it possible for North Legion to get feedback from riders who will put the product to its limits and at the same time accelerate the establishment of a new winter sport. The team riders have already proved that SMX is an awesome vehicle for practising mountain biking in the winter and that it is the perfect tool for learning new tricks.
