)In the 1960s, Hardy received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in
printmaking at the San Francisco Arts Institute. Don Ed Hardy was
born in 1945 in southern California. As a boy, at age ten his
destiny seemed clear that he wanted to be a tattoo artist. He
opened a make shift tattoo shop in his mothers house where he drew
tattoos on the neighborhood kids (Carvalho). 2
In 1973, Hardy became the first western non-Asian tattoo artist
to be invited to Japan to study with the master Horihide (Vance,
A25A). When he returned, he opened a realistic tattoo shop in San
Francisco where he focused on custom Japanese Style tattoos.3

In the late 1990s, Christian Audiger influenced Ed Hardy to come
out with one o the top clothing lines in the country (Carvalho).
Celebrities like Madonna, Brittney Spears, Snoop Dog, and Sylvester
Stallone, has been wearing Ed Hardy brands since he came out with
his own company and clothing line.
5Today, Don Ed Hardy is sixty three years old and has retired
from tattooing. However, he still shows his modern Japanese style
on his popular clothing lines
The main person that influenced him and his modern art style and
fashion is Christian Audiger. Audiger is the one person that helped
turn Hardys modern style art tattoos into his own customized
brand.
He gave Ed Hardy a word of wisdom that drove him to keep doing
what he does best:It s easy to die yet, so hard to live and
remember if you do what youve always done, youll always be what
youve always been(Carvalho). 6Don Ed Hardy has made a difference in
the way people dress including me.: the way I dress, the way I
