The Centre for Sustainable Chemistry is a carbon-
neutral chemistry laboratory located on the University
of Nottingham’s Jubilee Campus. The timber-framed
structure offers state-of-the-art teaching and research
laboratories.
Imtech carried out design, installation and
commissioning of the full mechanical and electrical
services package. The project was partly funded by
GlaxoSmithKline and at the centre of the building
is the Climate Neutral Laboratory (CNL). Working
in collaboration with the main contractor, Imtech
delivered innovative solutions, as the CNL is naturally
ventilated by wind power.
Scientific InnovationFollowing a design review, Imtech’s team identified
areas where the ventilation systems could be improved
and specifications modified to maximise efficiency.
CFD modelling was utilised to prove the system’s
effectiveness and performance prior to installation.
Carbon Neutral A key requirement of the project was that the building
needed to achieve carbon neutral status within 25 years
of operation. Equipment and systems were selected
and designed taking minimum embodied carbon and
maximum efficiency into account. Each component was
verified using a carbon calculator.
Award WinningSince completion the Centre for Sustainable Chemistry
has won many awards including architectural and
design accolades. We are very proud to have been
recognised by our industry, winning the Construction
News Specialist Awards – Project of the Year for our
work on this prestigious project.

The High Temperature Research Centre (HTRC) is a
unique collaboration between Rolls-Royce and the
University of Birmingham. It is a 5,800m2 facility
that incorporates manufacturing and research and
development areas, technical laboratories and office
space.
Quality InstallationImtech’s team were engaged during the pre-
construction phase of the project, this enabled us
to satisfy the drive for increased safety, added value
and a quality installation. Following consideration
of various techniques and processes that could be
implemented, in one example, the team utilised off-site
pre-fabrication of packaged plant rooms and valve sets.
This led to reduced on-site labour and consequently
also decreased health and safety risks.
Complex SystemsThe complexity of this facility means environmental
conditions can directly affect the manufacturing
process. To mitigate variants and ensure the facility
maintains appropriate and comfortable conditions
across the operational, research and office areas, the
entire project team worked closely together to create
an optimum engineering solution to deliver this key
requirement.
Seamless IntegrationIn order to deliver a successful project, support the
intensive interaction required and engage with the
entire team, an ethos of collaboration was embraced
from the outset. This resulted in a seamless integration
from completion of construction to installation of the
specialist manufacturing plant and equipment and
allowed these contractors to access the facility early to
commence works and achieve the planned programme.

The University of Hertfordshire’s new £50m science
building is located on the College Lane Campus
in Hatfield. This landmark building provides the
University with state-of-the-art facilities including
laboratories and research technology. This forms part
of the Universities 2020 Estates Vision, a pioneering
programme that brings vital additions and dramatic
transformations to the Campus.
Programme CompletionImtech undertook the mechanical and electrical
installation to this new building. Working closely with
the main contractor, the MEP designer and the client,
the team ensured that the mechanical and electrical
services were procured, installed and completed on
time and to budget, meeting the scheduled build
programme.
Proactive SolutionsFollowing late completion of the building design,
Imtech were appointed to the project with a six week
lead-in to site operations. The team engaged proactive
solutions such as adapting pre-construction activities
to work in line with the on-going construction
programme.
Also, our experienced engineers were able to ensure
quotations were received and the development and
submission of technical proposals and approvals were
all completed within the set timescale.

Waters Mass Spectrometry HQ, Wilmslow
The Waters Mass Spectrometry Headquarters building
in Wilmslow is a state-of-the-art unique 21,000 sq. ft.
multi-use facility incorporating assembly plant, research
and development mass spectrometry suites (spine
rooms), laboratories, clean rooms, a marketing and
demonstration area, offices, warehousing and training
This £10.5m mechanical and electrical design and
installation project included a Building Management
System which is at the hub of the buildings’
functionality, alongside heating, ventilation and air
conditioning systems across the facility.
Bespoke SolutionThe team developed a bespoke solution, in conjunction
with the client and the spine room manufacturer, to
provide an energy efficient solution that ensured the
327 pairs of mass spectrometry 2kw output pumps
were kept cool, whilst maintaining tight operating
conditions and environmental comfort in the mass
spectrometry suites.
To assist the team to achieve and design the best
solution, comprehensive dynamic simulations were
undertaken to better understand the behavioural
characteristics of the building. This included assessing
the impact of environmental influences such as wind
pressure and solar radiance, along with internal
equipment and how the occupants would interact with
the building.

Collaborative Teaching Laboratory
The University of Birmingham’s new £40m Collaborative
Teaching Laboratory (CTL), will bring together
practical teaching activities across a broad range of
science and engineering disciplines. The project has
now commenced and is scheduled to be complete by
summer 2018. The three-storey 72,120 sq. ft. building
will take the shape of a robust brick structure, with
variation in materials and form to represent three
different internal environments of the laboratories.
Rethinking TeachingImtech are delivering the full mechanical and electrical
design and build solution, including specialist systems
such as variable volume fume extract and specialist
gases, to this state-of-the-art facility. When complete
it will enable the University to rethink the way STEM
(Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
subjects are taught and will also enable enhanced
collaborative and interdisciplinary training and
engagement.
Efficient DesignThe building design has also been awarded the
BREEAM Excellent standard and an EPC A Rating for
efficiency.

Pfizer Biotechnology Manufacturing Facility
Grange Castle in County Dublin is Pfizer’s largest single
investment in Ireland, a £1.6 billion biotechnology
facility located on a 90 acre site in County Dublin,
with buildings and facilities extending to more than
one million square feet. The development is one
of the largest integrated biotechnology plants in
the world and is part of the Pfizer Specialty Biotech
manufacturing network.
Unaffected Operations
The major challenge on this project was undertaking
the installations whilst in a live, working environment
at the pharmaceutical facility. The team had to ensure
that day-to-day operations remained unaffected
throughout, as interfaces between the existing
electrical and instrumentation systems and new
installations were connected. This project, to expand
Pfizer’s Drug Substance Building at Grange Castle,
provided the client with an extension to the current
structure to enable the manufacture of additional new
products.

East Park Design Centre, University of Loughborough
The East Park Design Centre is a flagship building
for Loughborough University consisting of research
laboratories, teaching and lecture space, workshops,
computer suites, offices and a café. The striking
addition to the University’s campus is the first project
in the wider plan to modernise the mainly 1960’s style
East Park area. This innovative environment serves as
a well-appointed centre of design facilities; promoting
the strength and breadth of design activity at the
University.
Environmental Strategy With a strong focus on energy efficiency, the design
of the mechanical and electrical services included
natural ventilation, rainwater harvesting and energy
efficient lighting. The building is designed to allow
high levels of natural ventilation which minimises the
need for cooling services. The exposed concrete frame
also provides thermal mass which is used to regulate
internal temperatures. The building’s orientation and
envelope design maximises the use of natural light
whilst minimising excessive glare and heat gain.
Quality Standards With the buildings construction being a predominantly
exposed concrete structure, the mechanical and
electrical service installations needed to be at the
highest standard possible. In order to ensure that the
end result was a major success, Imtech worked closely
with the client and the architect providing specialist
MEP advice.
