ABSTRACT

Rakhmawati, Juniar Dwi. 2014. Improving the Listening Ability of the Eighth

Grade Students of SMP 4 Kudus in Academic Year 2013/2014 by Using

Movie. Skripsi. English Education Department, Teacher Training and

Education Faculty, Muria Kudus University. Advisors : (i) Diah Kurniati,

S.Pd, M.Pd, (ii) Dra. Sri Endang Kusmaryati, M.Pd.

Key words: Listening ability, movie, eighth grade students of SMP 4 Kudus

Everybody has learned their language since they were children, especially

about their mother tongue. The process occurs naturally and properly with a view

to communicate in society. Listening comprehension is so improtant because the

students learn a lot of vocabulary and grammar from listening activities. Students

communicate storyline of the film, whicy offers both a visual and audio depiction

of dialogue and story in apotential real-life situation, using real emotions, diction,

tone and slang, which can sometimes be lost in a classroom environment. The

eighth grade students of SMP 4 Kudus had problem during learning process,

especially in listening skill. Based on the personal conversation with the teacher,

the students were still difficult to understand the meaning of the text and did not

catch the words well and the score of the students were under passing grade. To

solve these problem, the writer used movie as a media of teaching to improve the

listening ability. Movie as a media of teaching allows the learners to access more

information while listening. The students not only can listen the audio but also

they can see the contains of movies.

The main objective of this research is to know whether movie as a media of

teaching can improve the listening ability of the eighth grade students of SMP 4

Kudus in academic year 2013-2014. To know the improvement above, the writer

also has to know about the implementation of movie and also the listening ability

of the eighth grade students.

The design of this research was a classroom action research. This research

conducted in the classroom with the aim improving the listening ability of the

eighth grade students of SMP 4 Kudus. The writer conducted two cycles and

every cycle used two movies. The teacher taught the students by using movie and

the writer observed the teacher and students activities in the process of teaching

listening by using movie. Here, the writer used observation sheet to observe the

teaching learning process and test to measure the listening ability of the eighth

grade students.

The data analysis shows that movie can improve the listening ability of the

eighth grade students of SMP 4 Kudus. From the calculation, the average score

from the first cycle is 70,69 with the highest score is 100 and lowest score is 40.

In the second cycle there was significant improvement by the score of the

students. The mean score is 90,34 with the highest score is 100 and the lowest

score is 80. It means that the listening ability of the eighth grade students are

improved. From the observation sheet, the writer knoes that the students looked

happily and imitate the voice of movies, so the students were not bored.

From the fact above, the writer suggests for the English teacher can use

movie as a media of teaching not only for listening skill but also for another skill

to make the difference situation in teaching learning process and solved the

teacher problem during the teaching learning process. For the students, they can

use movie as a learning media to make the students fun, enjoy, and raise their

vocabularies.

ABSTRAK

Rakhmawati, Juniar Dwi. 2014. Peningkatan Kemampuan Mendengar pada Kelas

Delapan Tahun Ajaran 2013/2014 Menggunakan Film. Skripsi. Program

Studi: Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan.

Universitas Muria Kudus. Penguji: (i) Diah Kurniati, S.Pd, M.Pd, (ii) Dra.

Sri Endang Kusmaryati, M.Pd.

Key words: Kemampuan mendengarkan, film, siswa kelas delapan SMP 4 Kudus

Setiap orang telah belajar tentang bahasa sejak kecil, khususnya tentang

bahasa ibu.

mengakses banyak informasi sambil mendengarkan.

delapan SMP 4 Kudus tahun ajaran 2013/2014.

mendengar siswa kelas delapan.

Page 12: IMPROVING THE LISTENING ABILITY OF THE EIGHTH GRADE ...eprints.umk.ac.id/3398/1/Hal_Judul.pdf · iii IMPROVING THE LISTENING ABILITY OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP 4 KUDUS IN

xii

terendah 40.
