An Introduction to GHS: Globally Harmonized System of Classification & Labelling of Chemicals
Tower’s Implementation Timeline for US Compliance:
Label and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) Changes
November 1, 2013 – December 1, 2014All product offerings classified
June 1, 2015All product labels and SDSs GHS compliant
December 1, 2014Begin using GHS compliant SDSs and labels for products
Label Changes:The label statements will be updated to contain 6 required elements:
1. Hazard pictograms
2. Signal word (i.e. Warning or Danger)
3. Hazard statements (such as “Causes serious eye irritation”)
4.
5.6.
Precautionary statements (including handling instructions,
safety procedures and disposal instructions)Product nameSupplier name and contact
Note: Detailed information is located on the Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
Safety Data Sheet Changes:GHS updates affect Section 2: Hazards Identification
1. GHS classifications for the product
2. Hazard pictograms
3. Signal word
4. Standardized hazard statements
5. Precautionary statements
The following represent examples of the hazard pictograms you will see:
Note: Descriptions can be found on OSHA’s website: www.osha.gov
December 1, 2013Employees trained on new label elements and SDS format.
July 2014Begin customer awareness and education campaign
International Approach≈ 18 countries (including the EU) have adopted or are in the process of adopting GHS with some regional differences
GHS will improve safety and health hazard awareness for affected employees
Standardization Labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) will change to become GHS compliant
GHS provides a harmonized system for improved and consistent chemical hazard communication
GHS applies to raw materials as supplied & to finished goods
The materials are not changing; only the classification and labelling are!

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Globally Harmonized System?
P.O. Box 3070 / Palmer, PA 18043
The Globally Harmonized System (GHS) is an international approach to hazard communication, providing agreed to objective and dened criteria for the classication of chemical hazards, and a standardized approach to label elements and safety data sheets, as well as a standard format for safety data sheets.
OSHA has adopted provisions of GHS under the HazCom 2012 Final Rule, which goes into effect June 1, 2015. This replaces the OSHA HazCom 1994 law.
For more information please see the OSHA GHS website. (https://www.osha.gov/dsg/hazcom/hazcom-faq.html#12)
The product we purchase from Tower Products now contains a GHS pictogram, what has changed in the product?
Nothing has changed in our product. GHS uses different hazard classication criteria that we must evaluate our products against and incorporate this information on SDSs and labels
Who is required to comply with GHS and When?
Chemical manufacturers, importers, distributors and employers are required to comply with the hazard classication, label, and safety data sheet provisions. There are various timelines for each part of the supply chain (see below)
Effective Date Requirements WhoDecember 1, 2013 Train employees on new label elements and SDS format. Employers
June 1, 2015 Compliance with all provisions of the nal rule. Manufacturers Except: Importers, Distributors and Employers
December 1, 2015 Distributor compliance with all GHS labeling Distributors, Importers
June1, 2016 Update all workplace labeling and hazard communications Employers
When will Tower Products SDSs and labels be compliant with the new GHS format?
By June 2015, all of our labels and SDS’s will be in the new GHS format; however, in the interim please expect to receive shipments that may have both the former and revised label and SDS styles.
Why are we complying with GHS?
As a manufacturer of specialty chemicals, Tower Products is required to by law. US OSHA adopted GHS under the HazCom 2012 Final Rule as a way of improving employee health and safety through standardized approaches to classifying chemicals and by consistent means of conveying the hazards.
