proposal entitle “Improving Reading Comprehension of the Eighth Grade
Students of MTs N Gembong Pati in Academic Year 2013/2014 Through
Summarizing Technique”.

Key Words: Reading Comprehension and Summarizing Technique.
Reading is one of the important skills in teaching English. By reading, the
reader can understand well about the message of the text and convey orally.
Reading also helps the reader to find information quickly. The eighth grade
students of MTs N Gembong Pati have difficulties in reading comprehension.
Criteria of Minimal Score (KKM) of the eighth grade are 75. Meanwhile, the
students’ average score are 65, it is under of KKM. Based on the fact, the
researcher is eager to help them through summarizing technique to improve
reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of MTs N Gembong Pati in
the academic year 2013/2014.
This action research aim is to describe whether summarizing technique can
improve reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of MTs N Gembong
Pati in academic year 2013/2014.
The researcher conducted classroom action research to solve the research
problem. The research was conducted in the eighth A grade students of MTs N
Gembong Pati in the first semester of academic year 2013/2014. The number of
the students in the classroom was 25 students; 20 female and 5 male. This
research consists of two cycles and each of cycles has the instrument. They are:
observation and test. Besides that, the researcher also applied the research design
in every cycle as follows: planning, action, observation, analysis and reflection.
The findings of the research showed that in the pre-cycle the average score
was 66.08 and the average score percentage was 66.08% as fair categorized. In
cycle I, the average score of reading test increased that were 73.28 and the
average scores percentage was 73.28% as good categorized. In cycle II, the
average scores of reading test increased that were 82.72 and the average score
percentage were 82.72% as good categorized improvement determined of this
research. The students’ improvement got scores under from 66.08% in pre-cycle,
73.28% in cycle I, and 82.72% in cycle II. Here, the optimal result was gained.
There is an improvement of the students’ activity in teaching reading
comprehension through summarizing technique in every cycle. In cycle I, the
teacher use summarizing technique to do the exercise in individually. In cycle II,
the teacher use summarizing technique to do exercise in pairs, to quickly find
main idea in reading learning activities made the students enthusiasm to follow in
reading activities. Seriousness when being involved in reading activities and in
doing the reading skill test was clearly in view. With high motivation, the students
were relax and had fun to get involved in the reading activities.

Summarizing technique can improve the reading comprehension of the
students, so it is suggested that the English teacher better uses summarizing
technique as an alternative in teaching learning process to improve students’
reading skill. In addition, the students should practice more in increasing their
knowledge; especially in reading comprehension through summarizing technique
in very well.

Membaca adalah salah satu ketrampilan penting dalam mengajar bahasa
Inggris. Dengan membaca, pembaca dapat memahami dengan baik pesan yang
ada dalam teks dan menyampaikan secara lisan. Membaca juga membantu para
pembaca untuk menemukan informasi secara cepat. Siswa kelas 8 dari MTs N
Gembong Pati mempunyai kesulitan dalam pemahaman membaca. Kriteria
Ketuntasan Minimal (KKM) dari kelas 8 adalah 75. Sementara itu, rata –rata nilai
siswa adalah 65,ini di bawah KKM. Berdasarkan facta tersebut, peneliti
berkeinginan untuk membantu mereka melaui teknik meringkas untuk
meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa kelas 8 dari MTs N Gembong Pati
tahun ajaran 2013/2014.
Tujuan penelitian tindakan ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan jika teknik
meringkas dapat meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa kelas 8 dari MTs N
Gembong Pati tahun ajaran 2013/2014.
Peneliti melakukan penelitian tindakan kelas untuk memecahkan masalah
penelitian. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada siswa kelas 8-A dari MTs N Gembong
Pati pada semester pertama tahun ajaran 2013/2014. Dengan jumlah siswa kelas
8-A adalah 25 siswa; 20 siswa perempuan dan 5 siswa laki-laki. Penelitian ini
terdiri dari 2 siklus dan setiap siklus memiliki instrument yang meliputi: observasi
dan tes. Disamping itu, peneliti juga menerapkan desain penelitian pada setiap
siklus sebagai berikut: Perencanaan, pelaksanaan tindakan, observasi, analisis dan
refleksi.
Penemuan dari penelitian yang dilaksanakan memperlihatkan bahwa
sebelum ke siklus I nilai rata-rata siswa adalah 66.08 dan persentase nilai rata-rata
66.08% dalam kategori cukup. Pada siklus I, nilai rata-rata dalam tes membaca
meningkat yaitu 73.28 dan persentase nilai rata-rata adalah 73.28% dalam
kategori baik. Pada siklus II, nilai rata-rata dalam tes membaca meningkat yaitu
82.72% dan persentase rata-rata adalah 82.72% dikategorikan baik yang sudah
ditetapkan dalam penelitian ini. Nilai para siswa meningkat dari pre-cycle
66.08%, pada siklus I 73.28%. dan siklus II 82.72%. Pada siklus II ini, hasil
peningkatan diperoleh. Ada perkembangan aktivitas siswa dalam memahami
bacaan melalui teknik meringkas pada setiap siklus. Pada siklus I, guru
menggunakan teknik meringkas untuk mengerjakan tugas secara individu. Pada
siklus II, guru menggunakan teknik meringkas untuk mengerjakan tugas secara
berpasangan, untuk menemukan ide utama dengan cepat pada kegiatan

pembelajaran membaca dan membuat siswa berantusias mengikuti kegiatan
membaca. Siswa serius terlibat dalam aktivitas membaca dan dalam mengerjakan
tes kemampuan membaca dengan tujuan yang jelas. Dengan semangat yang
tinggi, siswa santai dan senang untuk terlibat dalam aktivitasmembaca.
Teknik meringkas dapat meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siawa, jadi
ini disarankan bagi guru bahasa Inggris lebih baik menggunakan teknik meringkas
sebagai sebagai an alternative pada proses belajar mengajar untuk meningkatkan
ketrampilan membaca. Disisi lain, siswa harus banyak latihan untuk
meningkatkan pengetahuan mereka terutama dalam memahami bacaan melalui
teknik meringkas dengan sangat baik.
