Presentation Notes
Through our lodging program, the American Cancer Society provides free or reduced-cost overnight accommodations to cancer patients and their caregivers who have to travel far from home for treatment. Not having to worry about where to stay, or how to pay for it, allows patients to focus on the most important thing: getting well. For some, this can make the difference between getting treatment and not getting treatment. Our 31 Hope Lodge facilities in 21 states and Puerto Rico provided 176,000 nights’ lodging last year – and 4 million since the program began. Last year alone we saved cancer patients and caregivers $36 million in hotel expenses. Through our Hotel Partners Program, the American Cancer Society also partners with local hotels across the country to provide rooms for cancer patients not able to travel back and forth from home to hospital while receiving treatment.

Trends/Insights in Healthcare Transportation

• Access to health care does not equal access to quality of life. • If patients are getting NEMT rides through Medicaid, are they getting rides to other

places like the pharmacy, grocery store, social events, or entertainment which all contributes to their quality of life?

• It is very hard to quantify missed appointments into hard data to support the impacts of transportation and healthcare. Are healthcare providers asking about how a patient got to their appointment? Generally no.

• Healthcare patients are becoming more interested in app-based on-demand transportation (similar to uber, lyft) or transportation involving a call center

• Patients want to arrange transportation at the time they make the appointments –scheduling offices could hold a key to reshaping the health of those impacted with transportation issues.
