At the request of DLW, Varanasi, a water temperatureprofile of the EMD 16-cylinder engine was developed ontest bed number one using PT 100 ResistanceTemperature Detector (RTD) and advised to DLW,Varanasi.
Microprocessor based control system and micro-controller based engine governing system have beenintroduced in ALCO 16-cylinder engines. For theoptimisation of engine operating line by MP directorate,
fuel maps for 3300 hp and 3600 hp were developed toestablish the optimal engine operating points (speed,B ME P, a nd h p) . T he r el ev an t r ep or t N o.TR/ED/2010/208 was issued.
The testing of power assembly components supplied byM/s GETS, USA for the EMD 16-cylinder engine wasundertaken to establish alternate sources of supply oft he se c om po ne nt s. T he r el ev an t r ep or t N o.TR/ED/2010/210 was issued in September 2010.
In accordance with minutes of DMG, to curb failures ofgaskets in plate type lube oil coolers, two makes ofcompact brazed type lube oil coolers were tested andreports released for further field testing. The relevant
report No. TR/ED/2010/211 was issued in December2010.
A new design of single entry (modified) exhaustmanifold for M/s ABBs turbo-charger TPR-61 wastested and Report No. TR/ED/2010/211 released. This
new design of the manifold is expected to improve

reliability of ABB TPR-61 turbo-chargers on IndianRailways.
The revised valve timing diagram drawing for 16-cylinder ALCO engine with the larger base circle
diameter unit camshaft has been prepared and ReportNo. TR/ED/2010/212issued.
The ALCO 16-cylinder engine of test bed number twowas altered with necessary arrangements for fitting theElectronic Fuel Injection (EFI) system. The optimisationtests forthe EFIsystem were carried out and finallyfittedon the first EFI locomotive, which is under operationalobservation.
The obsolete test bed control system for the 12-cylinderand 6-cylinder ALCO engine test beds are underreplacement with modern test facilities. These areexpected to complete in ensuingyears.
RDSO has undertaken three new infrastructureenhancement works for improved testing facilities, namely: upgradation of dynamometer of ALCO 16-cylinder test bed for catering to higher horse power
needs, augmentation of heat disposal arrangements forall test beds, and enhancement to air-compressor andair-starting motors to cater to the new higher horsepower test beds.
Officers and supervisors of Engine Development and
Motive Power Directorate attended several workshopsat IIT, Kanpur during the year to update the knowledgeand skills for research in engines. The topics coveredincluded Advances in Combustion and Transportation,Diesel Particulate and NOx Emissions,
After intense literature review, specifications for state ofthe art emission testing and measuring equipment wereprepared for procurement and fitting on the EmissionTest Car (ETC) for IR. The ETC is expected to becomefunctional in ensuing financial year 2011-12.
An EOI was floated in March 2011 and discussions wereheld with several vendors for preparation of thetechnical specifications. This project shall enablestepwise improvements in emission performance ofboth, the ALCO 16-cylinder 3100/3300/3600 hp andEMD 16-cylinder 4000/45000 hp engines.
An EOI for the development of CRDI for ALCO 16-cylinder engine was released in Nov, 2011. The detailedtechnical specifications have been prepared andapproved. The tender is expected to finalise in thecoming year.
This project was primarily undertaken to benefit from theavailable supplies of CNG/LNG in India, reducedependence on imported diesel, and further reduce theemissions from ALCO engines. The preliminaryspecifications were prepared and EOI floated. Theprojectis likely to be completed in the year 2012-13.
