Improve Storage Administration with Hitachi Device Manager version 6.1

Technical Session: Hitachi Device Manager software is now standard with the Hitachi Universal Storage Platform™. The new release of Device Manager features improvements in storage administration including Host Scan. With Host Scan, Device Manager now makes it easier to map SAN viewed worldwide names to host names through the ability to name the hosts attached to a given subsystem with names obtained from its HSD or iSCSI target. Join us for a quick overview of what’s new in Device Manager.

In this webcast detailing Device Manager 6.1, you’ll understand:– How to configure host groups using the new host scan feature

– All about the new host mode options and device support in Device Manager

– How to take advantage of the other new Device Manager features such as,

updated SMI-S support, installation improvements and more

Agenda

Improve Storage Administration with Hitachi Device Manager version 6.1

• Simplified Host Management

• SMI-S enhancements

• Device Manager External Device Discovery

• Tiered Storage Manager Volume Creation

• Device Manager SMI-S 1.3 support

• Other enhancements

• Hardware and Supported environment support update

Page 4: Improve Storage Admin With Hitachi Device Manager

4

Device Manager Host View

• Add Hosts

– With agent automatically maps in Hosts w/proper names

– Without Host agent you use Lunscan which gives you numbered host names

– New Host Scan feature gives you real host names

Page 5: Improve Storage Admin With Hitachi Device Manager

5

Simplified Host Management

• Device Manager version 6.1 introduces Host Scan feature to reduce time consuming host registration tasks in the agentless environment.

• Host scan discovers worldwide names which are not assigned to any host in Device Manager from subsystems, then generates a host based on the Host Storage Domain (HSD) or iSCSI target

– The HSD or iSCSI nickname will be used as the host name.

Host Scan

Page 6: Improve Storage Admin With Hitachi Device Manager

6

Simplified Host Management - GUI

• Host view provides “Execute Host Scan” button to generate hosts.

More than one subsystem can be selected.

Simplified Host Management – CLI

• “HostScan” command is supported to generate hosts automatically.

Device Manager SMI-S Enhancements

• SMI-S Provider Configured by Default

• SMI-S Enabled Subsystem Support

– Discovery

– Reporting

– Storage management tool launch

– Refresh and removal

• SMI-S 1.3 Support

Page 9: Improve Storage Admin With Hitachi Device Manager

9

SMI-S EnhancementsProvider Configured by Default

• SMI-S provider service is automatically enabled and the setting panels are removed in order to simplify the installation process in V6.1 or later.

• Device Manager configures the service as following,– SMI-S provider service: Enable

– SLP service: Enable

– SMI-S SSL Port: 5989

– Two-way Authentication for object operations: Disable

– Two-way Authentication for event indication: Disable

– SMI-S agent host name: will not be specified

• The configuration can be changed by modifying properties in the server. properties file.

– The properties file location

• In Windows, <installation-folder-for-the-Device-Manager-server>\Server\config\server.properties

• In Unix, <installation-folder-for-the-Device-Manager-server>/Server/config/server.properties

– If the properties are changed, Device Manager server has to be restarted to take effect.
