With winter slowly creeping up on us, now is the time to make sure yourhome is ready to take on the elements. Have a look at our 6 steps tokeeping your home warm this winter.

6 Steps to Keeping YourHome Warm this Winter

1. FURNACE CHECK-UPEnsuring your furnace is working properly will keep you warm through the winter

and lower your heating bills. This can be a do-it-yourself job, or better yet, have itdone thoroughly by a professional. Air filters can be checked once a month. A goodrule of thumb is to pull out the filter and hold it up to a light – if you can see the out-line of the light, the filter should be OK. If not, time toreplace.

2. PREPAREYOURFIREPLACE

It is recommended that a fire-place used 3 or more times duringthe week when in heating season,should be inspected and cleanedyearly. The risk of a chimney firemakes this a seasonal maintenancetask you do not want to leave offthe list.

3. CHANGEYOURCURTAINS

Using heavier curtains will help toreduce heat loss through your win-dows or glass doors. Open them dur-ing the day to allow the sunlight towarm the room, and close them at night to keep the heat in.

4. AUTOMATEYOURTHERMOSTATProgramming your thermostat is a great way to reduce your heating bills. Have

the temperature go down a few degrees while you sleep, and then kick back inbefore it is time to wake up. If you’re out of the house for an extended period, main-tain the temperature above 12C or 55F in order to keep anything from freezing.

5. CHECKWINDOWS & DOORS FOR DRAFTSInspect all your windows and doors, and look for any cracked or broken glass.

Use a lit incense stick to check for drafts, and fix them by sealing with caulking, plas-tic, weather guards or a door sweep.

6. RE-INSULATE!The long-term solution to keeping your home warm and energy bills down is to

make sure you have adequate insulation. If you live in an older home, a home ener-gy audit is a great way to have this assessed.
